Death Stranding 2 Boss Fights Reward You for Losing

In Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, it’s perfectly okay if you don’t emerge victorious against the bosses. Unlike many games that use boss fights as a test of skill and a barrier to progress, Hideo Kojima is choosing a unique approach in this sequel. Although players are motivated to defeat the bosses, they won’t be forced to keep trying until they do. Instead, players can acknowledge their loss and proceed with the rest of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach without fear of missing out on essential content due to a defeat in a boss fight. A new element introduced in the sequel allows players to fully enjoy the game even after a boss battle setback.

According to Kojima during a Koji Pro radio broadcast (translated by Genki_JPN), in the game “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach,” players have an option to avoid boss fights. They can do this either by deliberately losing or failing to defeat the boss. When they die, choosing the ‘jump ahead’ option on the death screen allows them to progress as if they had won the fight. However, it’s worth noting that if they choose to skip a boss battle, there will be a minor change in their gameplay experience.

In Death Stranding 2, Hideo Kojima has revealed that less experienced action game players will have a special assist feature to help them overcome boss battles more easily. This additional option will show up on the game over screen beneath the “continue” option.

As a fan, I’m delighted to discover that in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, if players don’t manage to defeat the boss, they’ll still be immersed in the story through a visual novel-style exposition. This way, they won’t miss out on any crucial lore or context, even when battles prove too tough. Given Kojima’s emphasis on narrative in his games, this feature is a fantastic touch that ensures an engaging experience for all players.

As games grow increasingly complex, following the Soulslike style, and gamers finding themselves short on playtime, this innovative aspect is something more titles should consider implementing. While some argue it leans too heavily on guidance, others are relieved it doesn’t automatically unlock achievements, yet it remains an optional feature that most players can easily bypass.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach releases on June 26th for PS5.
