The famous battle cry “Avengers Assemble!” has been replaced with “Hail Doom!”. Emperor Victor von Doom, a powerful sorcerer and ruler of United Latveria, claims that his new group of heroes aren‘t just heroes – they’re superior. Marvel hints that Doom is gathering a team under the leadership of his son, Kristoff Vernard, who are actually supervillains disguised as heroes, similar to the original Thunderbolts squad. This new team goes by the name Superior Avengers.
In this week’s debut of “Superior Avengers” #1, the commencement of a six-issue limited series penned by Steve Foxe (previously of “New Champions”) and illustrated by Luca Maresca (“X-Men: Forever”), opens with Kristoff’s “Avengers Initiative”. Kristoff has advanced Doom’s time machine to scan the timelines for eras where Doom’s rule was prosperous, employing it to transport future heroes into the current era.
An older version of Amadeus Cho, a wise and gray-skinned Hulk from another reality, is suddenly transported to our present time. He explains that the tyrant Doom destroyed his world before he was eliminated for his disrespect.
A week has passed, and I, as a humbled moviegoer, find myself in awe of the newly unveiled Superior Avengers. This team, who valiantly protected Washington D.C. from the formidable alien threat, Annihilus, and the invading Annihilation Wave, has been brought to our present from a distant future.
Their roster includes: the armored Abomination, the clawed jungle cat once known as Erik Killmonger, the dark elf Malekith, the telepathic Onslaught, the brilliantly inventive Doctor Octopus, and the high-tech, intangible Ghost – a character whose cinematic persona aligns more closely with her Marvel Cinematic Universe portrayal than the traditional Iron Man adversary.
A truly remarkable assemblage of heroes, I can’t wait to see what adventures lie ahead for this new generation of Earth’s mightiest defenders!
Although they might appear intimidating, it’s exactly this nature that demonstrates Doom’s great promise – under his leadership, the concept of a ‘villain’ becomes irrelevant. Instead, they serve as a representation of what we aspire to achieve in the days to come. They are your heroes, they are our future. (Kristoff speaking to the public)
Apart from being cautious around Doom, Olivia (alias Doctor Octopus) subtly reminds her comrades about their original mission. They originate from Anno Doom +128, and are among the last survivors of the catastrophic incursion that wiped out universes throughout the multiverse (in “Secret Wars”).
In a clandestine operation, an elite group known as the Superior Avengers have taken control of Prison 42, a virtually impregnable facility located in the Negative Zone, which was set up by heroes such as Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) from the Fantastic Four. This prison is specifically designed to detain individuals who broke the Superhuman Registration Act during the superhero Civil War.
Ghost, let me remind you, we’ve defeated Doom before,” says Killmonger. “If it means restoring our future, we’d set this whole age ablaze again.” And so, the story continues…
Following their successful confrontation with Annihilus, the enigmatic Superior Avengers will soon engage another adversary from the Fantastic Four’s roster, the archaic sorcerer Diablo. Further ahead, they are set to encounter the genuine Avengers in forthcoming issues.
In a nutshell, Foxe expressed that it’s a mix of pride and fear to bring new characters or an entire team into the Marvel Universe. When editor Wil Moss proposed creating a formidable, covert Avengers group for “One World Under Doom“, Foxe knew he had to take a big swing. The Avengers readers will encounter here may have familiar names, but they’ll soon understand why they believe themselves to be superior to other teams. This book showcases some of the most ruthless, large-scale action Foxe has ever written for Marvel, and he is incredibly excited to tell this story alongside Luca Maresca. Luca excels at portraying both the intricate psychological games within our story and the (sometimes literally) fast-paced action.
