Big Changes Coming to D&D: What the Latest Errata Means for Your Game!

Many fans of Dungeons & Dragons have found themselves delving deep into Reddit discussions in an effort to decipher complex rules. However, the Dungeons & Dragons team occasionally provides clarifications and language modifications through errata, which highlight where certain rules have been altered for clarity or balance. When new errata are issued, the rule resources on D&D Beyond are updated to reflect these changes, as well as future editions of the core rulebooks. The most recent set of rule updates is scheduled before a revision to the Standard Reference Document, slated for April 22nd, 2025.

If you’ve been using your own version of the D&D 5e rules from earlier printings in your game, be aware that there might be some confusion when comparing them with what’s on D&D Beyond. This document details all the changes made to the rules, many of which are simply for better clarity, while others are more substantial adjustments to certain feats aimed at maintaining balance within the game.

The new round of corrections includes modifications for the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual scheduled for release in 2024 and 2025 respectively. To put it simply, all three core rulebooks have received some adjustments. These alterations are now available on D&D Beyond, and they will be incorporated with the SRD v5.2 update coming out next week, specifically on April 22nd. D&D Errata Rules Changes from April 16th

Although many corrections are relatively small, it’s still beneficial to take a look and determine if these adjustments might affect the way you’re currently playing. Especially when they involve making things clearer or rebalancing aspects of 5e, knowing about the changes can be helpful.

In the updated player’s handbook, the Strong Build trait for Goliath characters has been modified. Instead of gaining advantage on all saving throws, they now get advantage on any ability check. Additionally, some feats have undergone minor modifications to improve game balance in their functionality.

Grappler – “speed isn’t halved” changed to “you don’t have to spend extra movement”
Poisoner- “until you hit with the poisoned item” changed to “until you deal damage with the poisoned item”
Telekinetic- “its range increases by 30 feet” changed to “its range and the distance it can be away from you both increase by 30 feet”

Alongside the alterations in abilities and characteristics, the errata introduces minor tweaks to a variety of spells such as Animal Shapes, Conjure Elemental, Conjure Fey, Conjure Minor Elementals, Conjure Woodland Beings, Giant Insect, Polymorph, Shapechange, and True Polymorph. For improved understanding, the rules for Grappling and Hiding have been revised as well.

Compared to the extensive updates made to the Player’s Handbook, the modifications to the Dungeon Master’s Guide are relatively small. The toolkit for DMs has been updated with improvements to “Running the Chase” and the Random Treasure Hoard table in Chapter 4 has been slightly altered. Furthermore, several monster stat blocks have received minor revisions as part of today’s 5e errata update, particularly for those running specific Monsters.
