Katy Perry is back from space, and she likes it.
Following her descent from a 10-minute space voyage aboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket, along with Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez, the “E.T.” singer revealed that her 4-year-old daughter Daisy Dove is assisting her in adapting to Earth’s gravity once more.
“Back to the best reality,” Katy wrote in an April 16 Instagram Story, “packing school lunch.”
The image offered a peek at Daisy Dove’s school lunch, featuring pineapple, cheese, carrots, pretzels, and a sandwiche shaped like a star.
Meanwhile, Katy was back to caring for her daughter, and it’s no surprise that Daisy was present to encourage her mom during her historic space journey on April 14th. In fact, the preschooler attended the launch in Texas on April 14th alongside dad Orlando, bursting with pride as her mother embarked on her space mission. To further offer support, Daisy wore a shiny astronaut costume.
Simultaneously, Katy carried a genuine daisy blossom onto the ship. She shared with a journalist that this symbol wasn’t just a representation of her single child, but also served as a reminder of our stunning Earth and the magic that exists everywhere, even in something as ordinary as a daisy.
In addition to Katy receiving an abundance of love from her inner circle during her significant journey, Gayle also had her children Kirby Bumpus and Will Bumpus, as well as her longtime friend Oprah Winfrey, standing by her side. Interestingly, Oprah, who spoke passionately about her nearly 50-year friendship with the host of CBS Mornings, became emotional upon witnessing the Blue Origin launch.
Oprah expressed deep pride during the live broadcast, stating, ‘I’ve never felt prouder of my friend.’ She continued, ‘Going to space is not just about the journey itself; it’s about conquering fear and breaking barriers. I believe this will be an incredibly healing experience in so many aspects.’
Of course, Jeff accompanied his fiancée as well, showing concern by voicing disappointment at having to separate from her during their brief 10-minute adventure.
“I’m so excited for you, I don’t wanna get off,” he told Lauren. “I wanna go with you.”
Absolutely, the voyage led by women – featuring NASA scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn – was an exhilarating and fulfilling experience for all participants.
After her journey into space, Katy expressed, “It’s essentially ensuring room for future female explorers, with the ultimate goal being the betterment of our planet.
Keep reading for more about the Blue Origin launch…
Established in 2000 by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Blue Origin operates as a private space exploration firm based in Kent, Washington. As stated on their official site, the mission of this organization is to exploit the resources of space for Earth’s benefit and extend human presence in space through improved transportation and development of habitable destinations in low Earth orbit.
Blue Origin aims to accomplish these objectives by developing reusable rockets and engines to lower the expense of space travel, making it more affordable for civilians, and promoting sustainability in space exploration. During a 2016 Pathfinder Awards talk, Bezos expressed their goal as “millions of people living and working in space,” emphasizing their focus on reducing the cost of space travel by concentrating on reusability.
At this time, Blue Origin does not disclose its ticket prices on their website; however, they do require a $150,000 deposit for reservations.
Named after renowned astronaut Alan Shepard, who made history as the first American in space in 1961, New Shepard is a term used by Blue Origin to describe a “completely reusable, suborbital rocket system designed for manned flight.”
New Shepard’s pressurized crew capsule can accommodate six individuals. However, unlike traditional spacecraft, there’s no pilot seat because, according to Blue Origin’s website, “The vehicle operates autonomously—there are no pilots on board.”
The initial launch of New Shepard took place in 2015 as part of a test program that included 16 successful flights, all completed by 2021.
In July of the same year, the founder of Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos, along with his brother Mark, embarked on New Shepard’s inaugural human flight, joining an auction winner who had secured a seat for a record-breaking $28 million. Later in that year, William Shatner and Michael Strahan were among the passengers who boarded the vehicle (on separate missions).
The upcoming journey will be New Shepard’s 31st mission (hence the name NS-31) and its 11th human flight.
The New Shepard spacecraft, belonging to Blue Origin, is planning to take off from Launch Site One, situated amidst the Guadalupe Mountain range in the desert of West Texas. According to their website, the launch could occur as early as 8:30 a.m., Central Daylight Time (CDT), on April 14.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it like this: “According to Blue Origin, their astronauts embark on a journey that surpasses three times the speed of sound. They swiftly cross the Kármán line, the globally recognized threshold for space situated 100 kilometers above Earth. Once there, they’re free from the constraints of gravity, floating effortlessly to marvel at our beautiful planet. The voyage concludes gracefully as they descend under parachutes.” The adventure spans approximately 11 minutes in total.
The team for mission NS-31 includes singer Katy Perry, morning show host Gayle King from CBS, film producer Kerianne Flynn, Aisha Bowe who founded STEMBoard and was previously a NASA rocket scientist, bioastronautics researcher and activist Amanda Nguyen, and former TV anchor Lauren Sanchez (who is engaged to Bezos). Notably, this will be the first all-female spaceflight crew since 1963 when Valentina Tereshkova of the Soviet Union embarked on a solo mission, making her the first woman to travel to space.
Nguyen is set to make history as the first Vietnamese woman to journey into space, while Bowe will be etched in the annals as the first person of Bahamian descent to venture where few have dared to go before.
Each crew member has their personal motivations driving them to participate in this mission. For instance, Perry, who shares a daughter with her fiancé Orlando Bloom, aims to inspire Daisy by demonstrating that anyone, regardless of background, ethnicity, economic status, or education level, can achieve their dreams. King, who has openly discussed her apprehensions, aspires to motivate others to challenge themselves and expand their horizons. In her own words, King hopes to encourage people to step out of their comfort zones, saying that once she does, it will pave the way for many others who might have hesitated but are now eagerly ready to embark on this journey. Nguyen sees this opportunity as a chance to realize a long-held dream that had been deferred due to life circumstances. After dedicating herself to fighting for sexual assault survivors’ rights, Nguyen is now eager to honor her pre-assault self by pursuing her initial passion for astronomy.
As reported by “Good Morning America”, all team members are set to travel to the launch site ahead of the mission, where they’ll participate in training exercises. These sessions will cover a range of activities such as getting suited up for flight, familiarizing themselves with the spacecraft, learning effective communication methods with ground control, and reviewing essential safety procedures.
While the crew was undergoing collective preparations for the mission, some individuals, like Bowe and Flynn, opted to supplement their training by engaging in personalized preparation routines. For instance, Bowe intensified his training regimen over the past year, culminating in a NASTAR simulation that allowed him to feel what he might encounter during the flight. He also has a fighter jet flight scheduled and is eagerly anticipating it. Similarly, Flynn undertook several zero-gravity simulation flights and described the experience as having a Boeing 747 flown in a parabolic pattern, resulting in everyone floating upwards during descent – which was meant to acclimate her to weightlessness. Additionally, she completed NASTAR training in Philadelphia and endured up to five Gs of pressure.
As a devoted follower, I am excited to share some highlights of my preparations for the mission:
* From King, I will be receiving some photos, while Sánchez has promised a stuffed toy of her character Flynn from her book “The Fly Who Flew to Space”.
* Bowe is packing something historic – the Apollo 12 flag, which was given to her by Nancy Conrad, wife of the third man to walk on the moon, Pete Conrad. This flag will fly with me during the mission.
* Bowe is also bringing plant samples from Winston-Salem State University’s Astrobotany Lab and dehydrated conch chowder as a tribute to The Bahamas.
* Nguyen, like myself, is packing personal items that hold deep meaning for her: shells from the island her mother was a refugee from, and a reminder she wrote to herself after an assault – “Never ever give up”. She also plans to bring the pen used by former president Barack Obama to sign the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Act, as well as Freetown cotton tree seeds.
Stars have conveyed encouraging messages to the crew, with King receiving a farewell video from CBS Mornings featuring Tom Hanks, Megan Rapinoe, Bill Nye, Drew Barrymore among others. “Good luck,” said the Charlie’s Angels actress, expressing her eagerness to discuss the mission with the crew upon their return. On the other hand, Olivia Munn has voiced her criticism, questioning the purpose of the mission on Today with Jenna & Friends on April 3. She pointed out that the cost of space travel could be better allocated elsewhere and called it “a bit gluttonous.” King acknowledges the concerns about Bezos and Blue Origin, but believes that this mission transcends a single man and company, emphasizing that it’s not a zero-sum game, as both goals can be pursued simultaneously.
