Coachella’s recent return to the desert didn’t go exactly as planned.
In truth, it was a congested traffic snarl during the festival’s opening weekend. After attendees, who had enjoyed performances from artists such as Lady Gaga, Megan Thee Stallion, and Charli XCX, expressed their annoyance over spending hours stuck in traffic on their way to the California venue, the event organizer, Goldenvoice, is addressing the issue that arose.
Each year, there’s usually a quiet period from one o’clock to six o’clock in the evening. However, this year, as George Cunningham, the company’s senior vice president of public safety, pointed out during a La Quinta City Council meeting on April 15, we didn’t experience that lull.
On April 11, during the first day of a weekend-long festival, traffic issues erupted early on. This was particularly challenging for those trying to get to the Empire Polo Club, where Coachella takes place. Numerous campers voiced their long waits in reaching the venue on social media. Notably, TikTok user Liss shared that she and her companions had been stuck in their car for close to 10 hours after arriving at the camping ground at 3 a.m., hoping to avoid the crowd by doing so.
She also highlighted how the issue went beyond her long stay in the car.
1:00 PM and I’m still waiting in line to pass through security, which is quite frustrating given the scorching heat outside. Cars are overheating, people are running out of fuel, and there’s a lack of restrooms available – it’s all adding up to make this experience incredibly disappointing, not to mention dehumanizing. As a lifestyle expert, I always advocate for smooth, enjoyable experiences, and this certainly isn’t living up to that standard.
Concerning the significant wait time, Cunningham clarified that some of the delay was due to attendees showing up at Coachella a bit too “eager.” Additionally, he disclosed that they were short-staffed on that particular day, causing them to shut down six out of their total 32 tolls for vehicles to pass.
Nevertheless, Goldenvoice, the organization responsible for running the renowned festival since its inception in 1999, has devised a strategy to manage the traffic concerns during Weekend Two, taking place from April 18 to April 20. Cunningham shared with the city council that they will install 12 additional toll booths around Coachella’s parking zones to facilitate smoother traffic flow.
With this extra measure, their primary goal is to maintain the operation of all 44 tolls across the weekend. Cunningham confidently stated, “We’ve got an alternative strategy ready, which will enable us to reinforce our efforts with additional personnel if needed.
