As a devoted fan, I can’t help but acknowledge that Jean Grey is undoubtedly one of the X-Men’s most iconic figures, both for her immense power and enduring popularity. Yet, she’s also been a subject of much debate among fans. This remarkable woman has been an integral part of the X-Men since their inception with issue #1 back in 1963. Over the years, she’s accomplished feats that few can match – from saving the multiverse to tying the knot and traversing through various time periods. And let’s not forget her multiple comebacks from beyond the grave, making her revival rank alongside Superman’s in terms of its impact on comic book mortality.
Despite her lengthy tenure, it’s undeniable that Jean Grey has committed some extremely questionable actions, ones that are on par with or even surpass her most heroic deeds. Therefore, let’s delve into the seven most regrettable acts committed by Jean Grey, as there are certainly some shocking incidents to discuss.
This way of phrasing is more conversational and maintains a friendly tone while still conveying the necessary information effectively.
7) She Rejected Her Own Daughter
Initially, Jean and her daughter Rachel’s relationship began on a bumpy note. It’s important to consider the circumstances, as Jean has just emerged from captivity in Phoenix and inherited Madelyne Pryor’s memories, while Rachel is Jean’s daughter from an alternate reality that experienced an apocalypse. Given the complexities, it’s painful to witness Rachel presenting herself to a mother she never knew, only for Jean to burst into tears and shout that she can’t accept it. Eventually, they managed to reconcile, but for a while, Rachel felt her mom disliked her due to this initial encounter.
6) She Switched Spider-Man and Wolverine’s Bodies
Instead of its current version, Marvel’s original take on the Ultimate Universe is notoriously known for introducing several undesirable alterations to its superhero roster. One such modification was that many characters were portrayed as being unlikable, with Ultimate Jean Grey serving as an example. She manipulated Spider-Man and Wolverine’s minds due to her annoyance towards Wolverine. It wasn’t a specific choice to swap Spider-Man with Spider-Man, but rather sending his consciousness somewhere it least wanted to be. This act was petty and harmful, as it placed Wolverine’s mind into the body he least desired, which could have potentially created a supervillain with Wolverine’s near-indestructible form. Additionally, this incident led to Wolverine attempting to pursue a romantic interest in the teenaged Mary Jane during the swap, adding more drama and potential emotional distress. All of this chaos and possible psychological damage, simply because she was annoyed by Wolverine’s advances. Such a reaction seems excessive.
5) She Outed Iceman
In the Marvel Universe, much like many other telepaths, Jean Grey often peeks into the thoughts of her loved ones, revealing secrets they’d rather keep hidden. A notable instance occurred when the younger version of Jean from the Young X-Men read Iceman’s mind and disclosed his sexual orientation, which he was still struggling to accept at that time. This revelation, though unintentional, may have been premature for both characters, as young Bobby wasn’t prepared to confront this aspect of himself yet. Although things eventually resolved positively, Jean crossed a line by essentially outing him without his consent and before he was ready.
4) She Tortured Emma Frost
Jean Grey and Emma Frost have always had a strained friendship. Over the years, Emma has played the role of an antagonist for the X-Men on numerous occasions, even contributing to the release of the Dark Phoenix in one instance. Additionally, Emma was involved with Cyclops romantically before Jean. Both women have strong feelings for Scott Summers, and Emma is known for being quite possessive. In issue #139 of New X-Men, Jean discovered that Emma and Scott were engaged in a psychic affair, which she found extremely upsetting. In response, she took control of Emma’s mind, delving into her most personal and hidden thoughts. She then forced Emma to re-live her most traumatic memories repeatedly, apparently taking pleasure in doing so. Although Jean’s anger can be understood, it doesn’t make the cruel torment she inflicted on Emma any less unfortunate.
3) She Killed Rogue
In the Marvel Noir universe, the superheroes and villains are transformed into tough, gritty characters, such as gangsters in the case of the X-Men. Here, Dr. Charles Xaiver, a disgraced psychologist, gathers numerous sociopathic teenagers for his school and teaches them to become criminals. Tired of being controlled by Xavier and crime lord Magnus, Jean faked her death by murdering Rogue, who had assumed Jean’s identity. She could have easily escaped her life, but instead, she chose to take the lives of her friends without a hint of remorse or guilt. Throughout the story, Jean continued to kill several more people while masquerading as Rogue. In this version of events, Noir Jean is as ruthless and calculating as they come.
2) She Eviscerated the Hellfire Club
What’s more disastrous than taking one life? Taking several lives. The Hellfire Club has long been a formidable foe for the X-Men, especially Jean Grey, as they were the ones who released the Dark Phoenix onto the world. In the primary universe, they are typically repelled and either imprisoned or temporarily absent. However, in the Ultimate Universe, things took a drastically different turn. Following their attempt to release the Phoenix, Jean Grey unleashed her fury on the Club. She managed to break free from their control over her, then seized all their wealth, which she transferred to Professor X. Subsequently, she mocked them with the information that they were now valueless. As she incinerated each member, she made it clear that they were villains and this was a horrific way for them to perish. This was not heroic conduct at all.
1) She Carried Out Solar System-Wide Genocide
What’s more terrible than killing just a few people? Killing an entire planet’s population. The most horrific act ever committed by Jean Grey was when she transformed into the Dark Phoenix and destroyed a star in the D’Bari system, causing it to explode. This explosion wiped out the only inhabited planet in the system, resulting in the death of trillions of people at once. Fortunately, there was only one inhabited planet, or else the number of casualties would have been much greater. In no uncertain terms, genocide is the most heinous thing Jean Grey has ever done, and that’s putting it mildly.
