The field of generative AI is becoming increasingly intricate as it progresses and reaches new peaks. It appears that every significant AI research facility is in a hurry to reach the threshold of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), yet the massive computational power required for such tasks is slowing down the pace.
We’ve come a long way since the initial stages of Bing Chat (now known as Microsoft Copilot) and ChatGPT, where there were instances of ‘hallucinations’ or incorrect responses. Today, we’re seeing the development of models that mimic more human-like reasoning abilities.
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is a complex concept that seems to be used rather loosely. However, as per the terms of the significant collaboration deal between Microsoft and OpenAI, it refers to an AI system capable of generating potential profits of up to $100 billion.
Currently, predicting which company will emerge victorious in the AI race is much like making an educated guess on my part. Companies such as Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI have made significant strides in this field, yet they all encounter intricate hurdles. Among these are financial constraints, scaling issues, regulatory matters, and more.
Yet, a recent job posting by Google might imply that the company is making significant strides towards dominating the AI competition. In fact, they are already strategizing for an era beyond Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and are in search of a research scientist with expertise in this area to ensure readiness for future developments (as reported by 404 Media).
Per Google’s job listing, the Post-AGI research scientist’s main role at the company will entail:
As an enthusiast, I’d be at the forefront of investigating how Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) impacts various sectors like economics, law, health, and wellness, education, and the transition from AGI to Artificial Superintelligence (ASI), machine consciousness, and its implications on our learning processes.
It’s possible that the job posting indicates the company is making the right preparations to tackle complex technological advancements as they become available.
Microsoft CEO says Google already missed its AI opportunity.. but did it?
There’s been plenty of discussion about how Google might have capitalized more on artificial intelligence. In an earlier conversation, Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, seemed to echo this view, stating that Google had the capacity and means to dominate the AI field, yet apparently missed the mark.
It appeared that the executive’s remarks displeased Google CEO Sundar Pichai, leading him to deliver sharp criticisms towards Microsoft’s AI initiatives.
I am always eager for an opportunity to compare our models directly with those from Microsoft. Whether it’s today or another time, I’d jump at the chance! However, it seems they are currently utilizing models developed by someone else.
It’s possible Nadella was correct. A new report shows Google uses strong noncompete agreements to keep AI experts at DeepMind, and they even provide a full year of paid time off as an incentive. This could be their strategy for staying ahead in the competitive AI field.
In different discussions, Sam Altman (OpenAI’s CEO) and Dario Amodei (Anthropic’s CEO) have offered intriguing perspectives about AGI. Altman hints that the arrival of AGI could occur within the next five years with a relatively minimal societal influence. On the contrary, Amodei anticipates that we might reach AGI by 2026 or 2027, based on the projected trajectory of advanced AI model development.
