Russell T Davies, the showrunner for Doctor Who, has responded to a specific criticism about Ncuti Gatwa‘s portrayal of the Fifteenth Doctor, as some viewers have suggested that his character sheds tears excessively.
Previous incarnations of The Doctor typically showed less frequent displays of raw emotions, instead opting for a cool and composed demeanor in the face of the tumultuous situations they found themselves in.
In my perspective as a film critic, Ncuti Gatwa’s portrayal of the Doctor in the recent season left many viewers pondering whether the frequent outbursts of deep emotion were indicative of an underlying narrative thread yet to unfold.
In a recent interview with TVLine, Davies countered this notion, stating that Nardole’s emotional scenes in the show were an individual acting decision made by Gatwa during his performance, which the scriptwriter wholeheartedly supports.
Davies recollected the initial instance when [Ncuti] delivered such a captivating act, it was at The Church on Ruby Road. He believed Ruby had disappeared, seemingly vanished from time and space, an astonishing notion indeed, and in response, he presented that extraordinary performance right there in the studio, leaving us all mesmerized.
He wouldn’t instruct an actor of such caliber on whether to cry or not, as it’s not appropriate. It’s similar to telling someone not to laugh, which is absurd. Instead, it’s captivating and unique, as this emotional display is something fresh for the Doctor, opening up new avenues for extraordinary experiences.
Davies further commented that the expanded emotional spectrum of The Doctor leads to narratives that fans haven’t encountered yet, expressing disagreement towards those demanding “novelty” yet criticizing precisely these developments.
He remarked: “I’m merely observing, but I can’t help but express my gratitude for being part of such a regal show. Truly, what a talented performer! Remarkable!
Presently, Gatwa is reappearing on our screens as the nation’s beloved Time Lord in Doctor Who season 15, often referred to as season 2 of the new era started by Russell T Davies. This weekend, it carries forward with an episode titled Lux – a script penned by Davies and directed by Amanda Brotchie, who is renowned for her work on Gentleman Jack.
Doctor Who continues on Saturdays on BBC One and iPlayer.
