Today offers yet another chance for the entertainment industry to demonstrate their moral compass by introducing ethnically diverse characters in fictional stories. Hooray for a more inclusive world!
I’ll openly confess that I’m not a diehard enthusiast of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT). I enjoyed the initial animated series and found the first two live-action films, including Vanilla Ice’s involvement, quite entertaining. Unfortunately, my interest waned after that. Nonetheless, I have a basic understanding: there are four color-coded turtles, each named after an artist, and their mentor Splinter, a mutated rat who can perform ninjutsu. The Shredder is their main adversary along with his Foot clan. April O’Neil, a redheaded reporter in a yellow tracksuit, is their human ally. She’s not only attractive, but she’s also courageous and dedicated to helping the turtles.
In a universe filled with mutated ninjas and alien brains, it’s often April O’Neil that sparks debate. Now, NECA has unveiled their latest 7-inch action figure of April O’Neil.

….and she definitely does not look like the April O’Neil I remember.
In essence, April O’Neil, a character from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT), has undergone a change in her appearance in the latest action figure by NECA. While TMNT began as an 80’s comic book and had significant differences between its original black-and-white version and the cartoon, April O’Neil was portrayed as a brunette with a perm in the comic. Over the years, the character has remained predominantly Caucasian across various adaptations. However, this new action figure features a darker complexion, which is more similar to recent TMNT adaptations, such as the upcoming 2023 Mutant Mayhem film. This change in design has sparked discussions online about representation, adherence to original content, and the responsibility of toy companies in mirroring contemporary interpretations.
The question arises: Did NECA intentionally alter April’s character to generate publicity, by exploiting a controversial topic that some believe companies are using to stir up debate and gain attention? It is disheartening to consider this possibility.
Occam’s Razor leads us to suspect that the focus on April’s hairdo could be a red herring. Many have argued that the style suggests she may not have been completely Caucasian, as originally conceived by Eastman and Laird. However, others counter this argument by pointing out that many women of various races sported permed hairstyles in the 80s.
The debate is further complicated by the transformation of Baxter Stockman from African-American to white in the cartoon adaptation. The original comic panels clearly depict a color difference between the two characters, but it’s plausible that the decision to whitewash Baxter might have been due to the children’s cartoon wanting to avoid portraying a villain as black who aims to eliminate Splinter, a popular character. It’s essential to keep in mind the intricacies of such issues and remember that there are usually more complex explanations for these kinds of decisions.

Regardless of the perspective, certain analyses suggest that the creators at NECA might have overstepped their creative bounds with this particular action figure, given its primary selling point is triggering the nostalgia of die-hard fans. At present, NECA has declined to comment on these observations.
It’s important to note that when it comes to action figures today, there are no guarantees, and agreement among collectors will always be elusive. Some individuals will adore this figure and snatch it up immediately, while others will criticize it and leave it untouched on the shelves. Such differences of opinion are part of what makes toy collecting so intriguing: if you don’t appreciate it, simply don’t purchase it.
