It seems fitting to re-explore one of the standout episodes from the seventh season of Black Mirror, titled “Hang the DJ”. After all, it’s now available!
In the fourth episode of its fourth season, creator Charlie Brooker explores a futuristic version of dating apps similar to Tinder, where characters Amy (played by Georgina Campbell) and Frank (Joe Cole from Peaky Blinders) are paired up through an advanced matchmaking system.
Mentor, acting as an artificial matchmaker, connects each person with another for a specific duration, aiming to identify their ‘ideal partner’.
Amy and Frank frequently work in tandem for 12-hour shifts, developing a strong rapport along the way. However, their coach continues to partner them with different individuals once their assignments conclude.
Still, they seem drawn together repeatedly, and no following contests between them seem as rewarding or satisfying.
Or alternatively,
Despite their best efforts to avoid it, the two always seem to find themselves in the same matches again, and none of these encounters seem quite as gratifying compared to others.
At a later time, Frank and Amy find themselves teamed up once more. In an effort to challenge the status quo, they vow not to keep track of the ‘best before’ date on their relationship and instead aim to enjoy each moment together.
Hang the DJ ending explained: What does Frank do?
One evening, Frank can’t resist the urge and looks at the clock, realizing they’ve been a couple for five years.
Or,
One night, overcome by curiosity, Frank glances at the clock and finds out it has been five years since he started dating someone.
Frank feels somewhat reassured by the sight before him, but then his heart sinks when he observes Coach adjusting the expiration time to just 20 hours. This phrase echoes through his mind: “Things always unfold according to a plan.
By betraying Amy’s trust, Frank altered the course of their relationship, making him preoccupied the following day while they skimmed stones together.
Without realizing it, Amy observes that the stone can only hop across the water’s surface four times at a time; it never jumps more than that.

Instead of keeping it hidden to avoid spoiling their last moments together, Frank disclosed that he had looked at the expiration date earlier and there was just an hour left on the clock.
Angry, Amy accuses him of limiting their time together, while Frank urgently suggests they break down barriers and challenge the status quo.
After she angrily departs, they are both given new work partners. Yet, their feelings for one another persist, and Frank openly admits that his affections lie with someone else in his new assignment.
What happens to Frank and Amy?
Tomorrow, they call it my “partnering day,” the moment when I’ll encounter my “perfect counterpart” and embark on a new journey, leaving this cinematic universe behind.
To her disappointment, the algorithm confirms that it will be with someone she’s never met before.
In her last moments, Amy asks for permission to spend some time with one individual, and she chooses Frank. Afterward, she sends Coach gliding over the swimming pool four times.
In the restaurant, Frank and Amy eagerly hug, longing to be together again, as Frank discloses that the next day is also his partner’s assignment day.
Amy prompts Frank to recall the place he knew prior to being part of this setup, since they’re both pondering why we seem to forget our lives preceding this game.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but feel that the rules governing this cinematic universe are illogical at best. It seems to me that this world is a test of some sort, and if we want to pass it or even win, we must find a way to break through the barrier and flee. Interestingly enough, Frank feels the same way, and I can’t help but think he might be my ideal counterpart in this shared adventure.
As a cinephile, it’s clear that something’s amiss; the tension in the air hints at an imminent action by Frank and Amy. And sure enough, a guy with a taser strides towards them, confirming our suspicions.
However, Amy doesn’t retreat, but rather extends her hand towards the taser and finds that it’s not functional – it was a prop.
In this scene, the defiant action of the couple makes everyone in the restaurant pause, like they’re caught in a moment frozen by time. As they dash through the still city, they climb over a barrier with a ladder.
Their act of defiance causes all those in the restaurant to halt, as if time itself has stopped, while the couple sprints through the stationary city and ascends a wall using a ladder.
Do Frank and Amy make it out of the game?
Approaching the peak, the city recedes and fades into a blur of pixels, vanishing from sight. Amy and Frank notice multiple iterations of themselves, uncovering more than a thousand simulated worlds of their romantic journey.
998 out of these universes, Frank and Amy defied the established norms to be with each other, leading the system to classify them as a near-perfect match at 99.8%.
In 998 worlds, Frank and Amy went against the rules to be together, earning a nearly perfect compatibility score of 99.8% according to the system.
Or:
Frank and Amy broke the rules in 998 worlds to be together, making them an almost ideal match with a 99.8% compatibility rating in those universes.
In a surprising turn of events, the pair is returned to reality, where a dating platform connects Frank and Amy and indicates they are a near-perfect match, with a compatibility score of 99.8 percent.
In every reality, they always stay together due to their unwavering devotion to one another.
Or,
Their love for each other transcends all realities because of their steadfast commitment in every situation.
In a bar, two individuals who have never met before catch each other’s gaze, and as if on cue, the words “break the DJ” resonate nearby from The Smiths’ tune titled Panic.
Amy and Frank have escaped the tricky situation, allowing them to resume their relationship (once more), now devoid of the impending shadow of an upcoming end date.
