BBC Radio 2 DJ Colin Berry has died at the age of 79.
It has been confirmed that the radio station where he worked since 1973 announced his death. Over the years, he covered various hosts, such as Sir Terry Wogan and Sir Jimmy Young.
Additionally, he served as the representative for the Eurovision Song Contest for a span of 25 years – announcing the votes from the UK audience during the years ranging from 1977 to 2002.
In remembrance of Colin Berry, Tony Blackburn expressed on X: “I’m deeply saddened that my friend, Colin Berry, passed away yesterday. Phil Swern, Colin, and I had fantastic times together in the 60s. During that time, Colin was associated with Radio Caroline, later moving on to become a newsreader and DJ for the BBC.
Last week, I ran into him, and we were supposed to meet again today. Regrettably, I learned that he had passed away yesterday afternoon. He was an exceptional friend, and my thoughts are with his family during this difficult period. Rest in peace, Colin xx.
Helen Thomas, who leads Radio 2, commented: “We at Radio 2 are deeply sorry to learn about Colin Berry’s passing. He was a cherished member of our broadcasting team for a long time. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to his loved ones and friends.
In 1965, Berry embarked on his journey in radio broadcasting as a member of the crew at the legendary ‘pirate radio’ station, Radio Caroline.
After its debut, I joined forces with Yorkshire Television. Subsequently, I ventured into the world of record promotion. Later down the line, I was privileged to host BBC Radio Medway’s Saturday afternoon show.
Back in 1973, I became a valued member of the BBC Radio 2 family, stepping into roles as both a presenter and newsreader. During my tenure, I graced some of their most popular late-night programs like The Late Show, Night Ride, Band Parade, and Music Through Midnight. Additionally, I frequently filled in for daytime hosts when they took a well-deserved break.
Until September 2012, he was a well-known voice at the station. After that, he started hosting local radio stations for the BBC.
