Gremlins & Goonies Sequels Officially in the Works: Warner Bros. Unveils Plans

Warner Bros. Pictures has made an official announcement that fresh sequels are being planned for two popular 1980s series: Gremlins and The Goonies. They shared this information in a recent interview with Deadline, providing a sneak peek into their upcoming slate of projects based on established franchises.

Warner Bros. Pictures Chair and CEO Pam Abdy made an announcement, expressing their eagerness as Amblin collaborates with Chris Columbus to produce new installments in the Gremlins and Goonies series. The information released suggests that these aren’t reboots, but rather continuations of the original tales.

Originally released in 1984, the film titled “Gremlins” was penned by Chris Columbus and helmed by Joe Dante. This blend of horror and comedy gained a dedicated following, leading to a 1990 sequel named “Gremlins 2: The New Batch”. Despite plans for a third movie dating back to 2010, it never came to fruition. In 2023, the franchise was reimagined as an animated series titled “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” on Max. A subsequent season, now known as “Gremlins: The Wild Batch“, debuted in April 2025.

It’s likely that the upcoming live-action Gremlins movie won’t start anew but instead build upon the established storyline, based on the use of “new entries” and the franchise’s past development history. Warner Bros. hasn’t yet revealed any specific details about the plot or casting for this film.

For the movie “The Goonies,” Warner Bros. has officially announced a sequel. This 1985 adventure film was penned by Chris Columbus based on a story by Steven Spielberg and helmed by Richard Donner. The initial cast consisted of Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen, Martha Plimpton, and Kerri Green.

It was previously announced that a sequel to the original film is currently being written by Potsy Ponciroli (known for Old Henry), with Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario serving as producers through Amblin Entertainment. Chris Columbus will also return as a producer. Lauren Shuler Donner has joined the team as executive producer, but no director or specific story details have been revealed yet.

In March, the cast of the movie “The Goonies” gathered together at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles for a special event honoring Ke Huy Quan. Joining him were Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, and Josh Brolin, all former co-stars. Quan, who is beloved by fans as Data, has expressed his readiness to reprise the role if a sequel gets greenlit.

In a previous conversation with TooFab, he expressed that the experience was one of the most thrilling journeys of his life. He also mentioned with enthusiasm that he’d love to re-explore that character again.

As of now, no specific dates have been given for the upcoming sequels to “Gremlins”, and it’s uncertain if the original cast members will participate. At this point, both projects are being actively worked on but are still in their initial phases.
