22 years post its release, Ben Affleck – star of Daredevil – shares his thoughts on what he views as an underwhelming portrayal of the Marvel character. In an interview with GQ, Affleck reminisced about his time working on Daredevil, explaining that his fascination for the original content and appreciation towards his co-stars, including Michael Clarke Duncan, Colin Farrell, and Jennifer Garner, initially drew him to the project. Despite having these strong components, Affleck confessed that the final product didn’t meet its full potential, leaving him disappointed as an actor.
Affleck stated his reason for creating Daredevil: “I’m a fan of comic books, and I truly enjoyed working with Michael Clarke Duncan, Colin, and Jennifer Garner. However, I felt that the adaptation didn’t fully capture the best potential of the story, which was unfortunate.
2003 marked the advent of the superhero film craze at the turn of the 21st century, with movies like X-Men and Spider-Man becoming hits. However, Daredevil didn’t fare as well. It was met with largely unfavorable reviews (earning a 43% score on Rotten Tomatoes) and grossed $179.1 million worldwide against its $78 million production budget. Despite this, a direct Daredevil sequel never materialized, but it did lead to the creation of the spinoff Elektra, which also received harsh criticism and struggled financially.
After Ben Affleck’s film portrayal of Daredevil, this character gained significant recognition within the Marvel Cinematic Universe on television. The journey began with Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock in Netflix’s “Daredevil” and continued with “Daredevil: Born Again” on Disney+. Matt Murdock, played by Charlie Cox, soon became a beloved character among fans. Although Affleck hasn’t watched the new version yet, he expressed his well wishes to the creative team, including his co-star from “The Accountant 2,” Jon Bernthal.
In the early 2000s, when Daredevil first appeared on the big screen, the superhero movie genre was still trying to find its proper footing. At this time, films like Hulk and Fantastic Four were also struggling to make their mark. Filmmakers were experimenting with these characters, trying to determine what would work and what wouldn’t for a successful adaptation. Despite the strong cast of Daredevil, some viewers felt that the storyline lacked depth. Interestingly, the R-rated director’s cut of Daredevil released on home media received more positive feedback. It’s possible that Ben Affleck was disappointed with the theatrical cut because the studio wanted a PG-13 version to maximize box office revenue. The success of the R-rated TV shows suggests that an R-rated approach might have been more fitting for Daredevil on the big screen as well.
Despite his intense love for the character, it’s disheartening that Affleck didn’t get a chance to fully develop the best portrayal of Daredevil. At that point in time, he might have viewed it as the perfect opportunity – a consistent blockbuster role that also sparked his creative interest. Regrettably, it didn’t work out, experiencing a fate comparable to Affleck’s later stint as Batman. Although Daredevil didn’t turn out as he wanted, Affleck has still built an impressive career. His superhero roles may be behind him now, but it’ll be intriguing to see where his future takes him.
