The nostalgic allure of the ’90s is stronger than ever, as demonstrated by productions such as the horror-comedy “Y2K”. Remarkably, Alicia Silverstone will be revisiting her iconic role of Cher Horowitz for a much-anticipated TV revival of the 1995 hit comedy “Clueless“, considered one of the finest productions of that decade.
Remarkably, it’s not just a simple instance of a celebrity lending their name to a cheap imitation for quick earnings. Reports suggest that Silverstone will be involved in both acting and producing roles for an upcoming project, which is currently being developed by CBS Studios and Universal TV. If the series gets greenlit, it would eventually become available for viewers with Peacock subscriptions, although the platform is not yet ready to confirm this.
As reported by Deadline, original filmmakers Amy Heckerling and Robert Lawrence are set to return as executive producers. Leading the creative aspect of this project are Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who have experience with teen-focused narratives and revivals. Their work includes shows like Gossip Girl, Dynasty, Nancy Drew, and they’re also involved in the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel TV show Elle, where Reese Witherspoon personally selected the star. Completing the team is Jordan Weiss, creator of Dollface.
This news is incredibly exciting in the best possible way, and it reminds me of ideas I’d love to see in a contemporary remake of “Clueless”. Here are a few suggestions, though more thoughts come to mind as I eagerly await updates on additional cast members. As for that topic…
Cher And Dionne Being BFFs With Amber Now
Sadly, one of the unforgettable characters from Clueless was Brittany Murphy’s Tai, who transformed from newbie to heartthrob. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2009 at only 32 years old. Although it’s imaginable that the creative team could introduce a new adult friend for Cher (and Dionne, played by Stacey Dash), Elisa Donovan, who played a significant role as Amber Mariens, would be an excellent choice to fill the third friend’s spot, serving as a potential rival to Cher.
In high school, they weren’t particularly close, but it’s common for enemies to have more in common than they realize. Over time, those old grudges might dissipate. Given that this is one of the most fashion-focused movies, I can’t wait to see Cher and Amber’s stylish outfits together as much as possible on screen.

I Would Love Flashbacks To The ’90s With The Actors Still Playing Their Younger Selves
It’s an intriguing idea to update the classic film “Clueless” to a modern setting, while incorporating flashbacks to reveal untold aspects of Cher’s life. However, since we are familiar with how the original characters appeared when they were younger, I don’t want new actors taking on those roles. Instead, in the spirit of shows like “PEN 15” and “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp,” I believe Alicia Silverstone and other returning cast members should portray their younger selves as well.
Is this an indirect method of humorously commenting on Paul Rudd’s timeless youth, given the three decades that have passed since the movie was released? That’s not exactly what it is. However, this isn’t the sole intention either, considering that Paul Rudd has already leveraged his youthful appearance in more contemporary roles, including revisiting the “First Day of Camp.” Nevertheless, it would be delightful if 84-year-old Dan Hedaya were to reprise his role as Cher’s father.
Regularly viewing iconic ’90s wardrobe styles on television could become a common sight, fingers crossed that the upcoming series accurately portrays their costume department.
By the way, could you possibly provide some additional insight on that memorable quote from Breckin Meyer’s character Travis in Clueless, particularly about the contrasting views on musical preferences between generations?
In simpler terms, if my affection for The Rolling Stones is similar to how my children will likely feel about Nine Inch Nails, then it seems unfair for me to continue bothering my mother excessively.
There are many lesser-known ’90s TV shows that I’d be thrilled to see make a comeback someday. If Clueless is actually picked up for production and receives positive feedback from the audience, perhaps it could spark a new trend of revivals.
