Supporters of “Bosch” have been disheartened since Amazon Studios revealed that Season 3 would be its final installment. With the conclusion of “Bosch: Legacy“, many enthusiasts are hunting for a new crime series to replace their favorite. Fortunately, Harry Bosch will make a comeback in the spin-off series “Ballard“, slated to premiere this summer. In the interim, there’s a plethora of shows that fans of “Bosch: Legacy” can indulge in.
Bosch: Legacy is the sequel to the original Bosch series, both of which revolve around the character of Harry Bosch, a rebellious detective. In the original series, Harry was portrayed as an LAPD detective, with each season focusing on a different case he worked on. On the other hand, Bosch: Legacy finds Harry retiring from the police force to become a private investigator, and his daughter Maddie joining the LAPD. Both series are based on Michael Connelly’s novels, with another spin-off titled Ballard also in development. While nothing quite compares to the unique appeal of Bosch or Bosch: Legacy, numerous other shows offer engaging content for fans to enjoy until Ballard premieres.
Reacher Is a Crime Show Based on a Book Series
In the vein of the “Jack Reacher” book series by Lee Child, similar to “Bosch: Legacy,” the character of Reacher stands apart from law enforcement yet finds himself entangled in diverse criminal probes. Unlike Harry, who was once a detective, Jack Reacher boasts a military past they both share in common.
As a devoted fan, I’d say I used to serve in the U.S. Army military police, just like Jack Reacher. My physical prowess, coupled with my towering stature, serves me well when tackling diverse cases. While Harry Bosch may not be as physically imposing, we both share a knack for independent investigation – an approach that can sometimes aid or complicate an inquiry. The gripping first season of ‘Reacher’ is adapted from Lee Child’s captivating debut novel, ‘Killing Floor’.
Law & Order: Organized Crime Has Season-Long Arcs
Unlike other series in the “Law & Order” franchise, “Law & Order: Organized Crime” doesn’t have a case-by-case format. Instead, it presents season-long narratives, similar to “Bosch” and “Bosch: Legacy”. Both “Organized Crime” and “Bosch: Legacy” are spin-offs from original shows, with “Organized Crime” focusing on detective Elliot Stabler, who was previously seen in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”.
In a new series titled “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” Stabler re-joins the NYPD to delve into the murder of his wife and subsequently gets embroiled in the Organized Crime unit. Similar to this character, Harry Bosch has faced crimes personally, such as the murders of his mother and ex-spouse, Eleanor Wish. Both Elliot and Harry exhibit distinct methods of work, which may unintentionally create distance with their colleagues.
Line of Duty Deals With Crimes Within the Force
Line of Duty is a British TV series centered around a police unit that investigates corruption within the force. Their job involves probing various crimes committed by officers and uncovering any criminal activity they might be involved in while on duty. Line of Duty and Bosch share a common theme initially, as their lead characters face trials due to past investigations that didn’t go as planned. Subsequently, both are reassigned to different divisions.
In each season, Line of Duty presents a fresh case with intriguing enigmas and introduces new characters. Interestingly, although Harry Bosch doesn’t belong to Internal Affairs, the fourth season of Bosch focuses on him probing his fellow detectives. Similar to its protagonist, Line of Duty is filled with action, drama, and a character who strives for justice, much like Harry does.
Cross Could Be Amazon’s Next Big Crime Series
Cross is a television show that’s based on the book series by James Patterson called Alex Cross. Alex Cross is a character who is both a forensic psychologist and a homicide detective, and he often explores the minds of murderers. Although Bosch: Legacy doesn’t delve into the psychology of killers in the same way, fans of Bosch: Legacy may still find aspects they enjoy in Cross.
The show “Cross” might share some similarities with “Bosch: Legacy,” even though it’s generally darker. Both series are adapted from book collections and follow ongoing investigations, rather than the traditional one-case-per-episode format seen in many crime shows. With only one season released thus far, “Cross” has already been renewed for a second season, making it an appealing choice for fans of “Bosch: Legacy” who are looking for something new to watch next.
Perry Mason Shares Many Similarities With Harry Bosch
Perry Mason is another crime drama series, derived from a book series penned by Erle Stanley Gardner. In the Perry Mason novels, the protagonist, Perry Mason, is a lawyer who solves detective and legal mysteries. However, in the 2020 HBO adaptation of Perry Mason, Perry functions as a private investigator, collaborating with a well-known attorney, similar to how Harry Bosch operates alongside Honey Chandler as a private investigator.
Perry Mason, just like Harry, is a former war veteran. They both grapple with the scars from their military past and the challenges of their personal lives while tackling criminal cases. Unfortunately, Perry Mason was terminated after two seasons, but it garnered positive feedback. This might provide enough entertainment for Bosch: Legacy enthusiasts until the new Ballard series arrives.
The Wire Has a Hidden Connection to Bosch: Legacy
It’s interesting to note that while “The Wire” and “Bosch: Legacy” are two distinct crime dramas, they share a common production backbone. Eric Overmyer, the brain behind “Bosch” and its spinoff “Bosch: Legacy,” also contributed significantly to “The Wire” as both a producer and writer.
In addition to having similar storylines, both “The Wire” and “Bosch: Legacy” feature some of the same actors. For instance, Jamie Hector played Detective Jerry Edgar in “Bosch” and “Bosch: Legacy,” as well as drug kingpin Marlo Stanfield in “The Wire.” Similarly, Lance Reddick, who was a prominent character in the original “Bosch” series, made a brief appearance in “Bosch: Legacy” before his passing, and he also belonged to the main cast of “The Wire.” Interestingly, both shows share a real-life connection as their creators, David Simon from “The Wire,” and Michael Connelly from “Bosch,” were previously police reporters.
Marcella Features a Detective Forging Her Own Path
The British crime drama series, titled “Marcella,” centers around the character Marcella Backland, a former detective who re-enters the force to solve an old case that lingers in her mind. Similar to Harry, Marcella often acts independently, disregarding orders to trust her instincts, which sometimes leads her into challenging situations.
In each season, Marcella delves into a distinct case, yet all are linked within an ongoing narrative that spans the entire series. Personal strife and challenges for Marcella intertwine with her investigations, creating a captivating tale from start to finish. Similar to Harry, Marcella can occasionally push boundaries in her relentless pursuit of the truth.
Justified Shares Many Parallels With Bosch and Bosch: Legacy
According to the short stories penned by Elmore Leonard, featuring the character Raylan Givens, Raylan shares some similarities with the character Harry – both have their unique approaches to their work which often leads to complications for others. Notably, Raylan frequently finds himself at odds with his superiors and even entangling himself in conflicts with criminals.
Raylan Givens and Harry Bosch have a comparable past, as they were both linked to controversial shootings that negatively impacted their professional paths. For Harry, shooting a man known as “The Dollmaker” named Norman Church led him to be reassigned from the Robbery-Homicide Division to the Hollywood Homicide unit. In contrast, Raylan’s shooting of a mob assassin in Miami resulted in his transfer to the Marshal’s Office in the Eastern District of Kentucky. Given their shared backgrounds, fans of Bosch: Legacy may find Justified an ideal show to explore next.
Luther Deals With the Struggles of the Job
The show “Luther” centers around the character John Luther, who is a Detective Chief Inspector in the Serious Crime Unit. This series is quite gritty and dark compared to shows like “Bosch” and its spin-off “Bosch: Legacy.” While both Bosch and Luther are investigators, Luther delves deeper into the complexities of his job and how it impacts his personal life, a topic that might be more prominent in the book series than in the TV version of “Bosch.
For fans of “Bosch: Legacy,” “Luther” remains an engaging choice, offering top-notch drama and acting that appeals to a wide audience. Although “Luther” delves into deeper, more intricate themes than “Bosch: Legacy,” the crime and mystery it presents will leave viewers eager for more. Both series allow their professions to influence their personal lives significantly, but Luther pushes boundaries that Bosch may not have crossed.
The Lincoln Lawyer Is Another Michael Connelly Adaptation
For enthusiasts of “Bosch” and “Bosch: Legacy,” it’s likely that “The Lincoln Lawyer” will be a compelling choice, given that both shows are based on the works of Michael Connelly. In the books, characters from “Bosch” and “The Lincoln Lawyer” series, specifically Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller, intersect in multiple stories. Regrettably, as “The Lincoln Lawyer” and “Bosch: Legacy” are on separate streaming platforms, their TV adaptations don’t share a continuity.
Watching The Lincoln Lawyer doesn’t necessitate a personal connection with its characters. For fans of Bosch: Legacy seeking another show after the finale, they may discover a sense of familiarity in The Lincoln Lawyer. Moreover, for readers who enjoy Michael Connelly books, watching The Lincoln Lawyer would be a logical choice following their viewing of both Bosch and Bosch: Legacy.
