The most recent PS2 title making a comeback on both PS5 and PS4 consoles is an absolute must-play if you’re yet to enjoy it. Over the last few years, we’ve noticed an increasing number of PlayStation 2 games being ported to contemporary platforms. As an ardent fan of the PS2, this trend has been incredibly thrilling for me because it’s made it simpler for me to revisit classics like TimeSplitters, Siren, Jak and Daxter, and the Sly Cooper trilogy. Now, another beloved PS2 game from yesteryears has resurfaced, and I’ve been advocating for its brilliance for over two decades.
Starting this week, “War of the Monsters” is now available on PS5 and PS4. First launched in 2003, “War of the Monsters” was developed by Incognito Entertainment, a studio renowned for creating games such as “Twisted Metal: Black” and “Warhawk”. Despite being closed down by Sony in 2009, during its short-lived existence, “War of the Monsters” is widely considered to be one of their finest creations.
If you haven’t heard about “War of the Monsters”, it’s essentially a battle game where players can pick a monster from an extensive list and engage in fights against each other across expansive city landscapes. It shares similarities with other giant monster fighting games popular during that time, particularly “Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee” and “Godzilla: Save the Earth”. Unlike these Godzilla games which only had monsters linked to the Godzilla franchise, “War of the Monsters” introduced an original cast of combatants, although many were still inspired by well-known monsters from movie history.
Sony has incorporated common enhancements for PS5 and PS4 users, including enhanced visuals, quicker saving options, and a rewind function. These are the main advancements that have been introduced with the new PlayStation hardware. Notably, “War of the Monsters” has now been included in the April 2025 lineup of classic games for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers.
In recent times, games similar to War of the Monsters are scarcely produced, a fact that isn’t surprising given the current gaming landscape. The era of cooperative/multiplayer games from the couch appears to be long gone and seems unlikely to make a comeback. However, this doesn’t diminish the fact that War of the Monsters remains an incredibly fun game in 2025. Battling as a colossal gorilla who can fling cars and other items at a massive praying mantis is the kind of mindless entertainment I yearn for in contemporary video games. Although some aspects of its gameplay and graphics may seem outdated compared to today’s standards, the prospect of War of the Monsters being re-released excites me as it brings back memories of competing with my brother as we did two decades ago.
If you share my fondness for revisiting classic PS2 games on the PlayStation Store, I wholeheartedly recommend giving the game “War of the Monsters” a try. With its tight gameplay, powerful soundtrack, and nostalgic feel, it offers an enjoyable experience that hasn’t lost its charm. In fact, I find myself yearning for a sequel, even though one might not be in the works. At least, now, playing the original is more convenient than it ever has been before.
