We are totally RSVPing to this Clueless reboot.
As a loyal fan, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll once again step into the shoes of Cher Horowitz, as I’ve been given the opportunity to reprise my role in a brand new TV series, following up on the iconic 1995 film, Clueless. This exciting news has been confirmed by TopMob News!
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be joining forces with Jordan Weiss, as well as the creative minds behind Gossip Girl – Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage – in executive producing this exciting series. These brilliant individuals will also lend their writing skills to the project. Moreover, Amy Heckerling, renowned for her work on the ’90s film, will be executive producing the sequel series alongside Robert Lawrence, one of the original movie’s producers.
Moreover, although details about the storyline of the upcoming series are still under wraps, it has already secured its place on the streaming service, Peacock.
TopMob News has reached out to Alicia’s rep for comment but has not heard back.
It’s not a new concept; there have been discussions about reviving the movie “Clueless” in Hollywood before. In 2020, a different spinoff series was being developed by CBS studios, with them also producing the upcoming show. In that version, Dionne (previously portrayed by Stacey Dash) was supposed to be on a quest to find Cher, who had disappeared. However, the mystery-comedy angle was abandoned the following year.
Following the popularity of the film “Clueless”, which featured Paul Rudd, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison alongside Alicia, Alicia looked back on her role as Cher and confessed that at first, she wasn’t particularly fond of the character.
In an interview with Vogue back in 2020, I shared my initial impression of Cher, finding her materialistic, unappealing, and frankly quite annoying. However, upon getting to know her better through our work together, I discovered a completely different side – one filled with heart and love that I had previously misjudged.
I couldn’t help but pour my unwavering adoration and deepest emotions into this character, balancing her immense affection for ‘Daddy’ while also striving to be a loyal friend. Yet, I couldn’t ignore the elements that made me squirm a bit,” (as an obsessed fan might express it.)
As you eagerly anticipate the upcoming revival of “Clueless“, here’s a peek at some fascinating facts about the original movie.
Finding a boy in high school could be as pointless as trying to find sense in a Pauly Shore film, but researching at Beverly Hills High proved especially productive for screenwriter-director Amy Heckerling. As she shared with Entertainment Weekly, “What stood out to me was these girls always preoccupied with grooming.
2. After several rounds of editing, the producers struggled to decide on a title for their high school movie. Some initial suggestions were “No Worries” and “I Used to Be a Teenager.”
3. Alicia Silverstone was almost destined to play the role of Cher. During scriptwriting, Heckerling became aware of the young actress featured in several Aerosmith videos. “I watched the first one and recorded it so I could present the girl I liked when I submitted my script,” she said to The Telegraph.
Meanwhile, Silverstone’s casting director friend, Carrie Frazier, persistently urged her to watch this particular actress in the movie ‘The Crush.’ “She insisted that I had to see this girl, her name was Alicia Silverstone. And I thought, ‘I want the Aerosmith Girl!’ However, it turned out we were discussing the same person.”
4. Silverstone clinched the role at a dinner with Heckerling. As Twink Caplan, the associate producer and the one who portrayed Cher’s sweet teacher Miss Geist, remembered: “When she was drinking through a straw, Alicia leaned over the table to sip it from the glass instead of bringing the glass and straw to her face. And Amy thought: ‘Oh my god, this is my girl.’ Alicia was perfect for Cher, she is just the sweetest girl, she still is.
5. However, despite Heckerling’s confidence, she had to follow instructions from executives who wished to cast a broad spectrum of actors. At different stages during the casting process, she remembered in Jen Chaney’s 2015 book, “As If!: The Oral History of Clueless,” as excerpted by Vanity Fair, “I saw Alicia Witt,” she said. “And who else? Tiffani Thiessen. The one that—she was in that show and she cut her hair and everyone was upset? Keri Russell, yes. Then they suggested, ‘You’ve got to see the girl in [Flesh and Bone].’ I never got to see her. I guess she was occupied elsewhere. That turned out to be Gwyneth Paltrow.” Reese Witherspoon also advocated strongly—”Everyone said, ‘This girl’s incredible. She’s going to be huge,'” Heckerling recalled—”But Alicia is Cher.
Additional close calls featured potential candidates such as Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner, Lauryn Hill, Terrence Howard, Seth Green, Owen Wilson, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Affleck, Renner, and Hill were up for the role of Cher’s friend Dionne; Howard was considered for Dionne’s boyfriend Murray; Green and Wilson were in contention for the lovable stoner Travis; and Gellar was offered the part of fashion victim Amber. Co-producer Adam Schroeder shared in “As If!” that there was a significant negotiation to release Gellar from her role on “All My Children,” but the producers refused, only allowing her to leave for a brief period.
7. Initially, it seemed unthinkable that anyone other than Paul Rudd could play Cher’s adversary-turned-boyfriend Josh. However, the studio almost chose another actor, but when their plan fell through, they returned to Paul and found him exceptional. “He went through numerous auditions to secure that role,” casting director Marcia Ross told The Telegraph.
8. At first, he had hoped to be considered for a different part. He confessed to Chaney in her 2015 book, “I thought Murray was a white guy trying to be Black. I didn’t realize he was actually Black.” Furthermore, he added, “I believed the character I imagined was a white man attempting to appropriate Black culture. However, unexpectedly, that character was going to be African-American. Oh, well.
9. Finding the right actor to portray Cher’s unrequited love interest, Christian, proved to be the most challenging aspect during casting. Ross admitted, “We had auditioned countless actors, but none seemed to fit the bill.” The struggle was finding an individual who could emanate the desired throwback vibe. Then, when New York-based actor Justin Walker walked into the room, everything changed. “He just had it,” Ross explained. “We didn’t know who we wanted for Christian until then.” Walker, who was working at a bar during his audition, vividly recalls the moment he got the news. “I was managing a bar called Overtime Bar and Grill, located next to Madison Square Garden,” he shared in As If!. “I was on a pay phone when my agent informed me that I’d landed the role, and I dropped the phone and began sprinting south on Eighth Avenue.
10. In hindsight, embodying Miss Geist and Mr. Hall, the lovelorn educators, seemed almost effortless. Wallace Shawn remarked, “I guess they figured I was a fitting choice without even needing to audition.” After all, he had prior experience as a teacher himself, which undoubtedly helped.
As for Caplan, Heckerling’s associate producer, she didn’t initially grasp that she was being tapped for the charming Miss Geist role. “I believe she was modeled after a teacher Amy had encountered in her own educational journey,” Caplan shared about the character specifically crafted for her, adding, “and she believed I could bring her to life.
11. When the actor cast as Cher’s mugger unexpectedly withdrew just before his call, Heckerling was put in a tight spot and had to rush around. She recalled, “Back then, nobody had mobile phones, so I was literally calling everyone at their workplace, but no one was answering.” Fortunately, Jace Alexander happened to be working with producer Scott Rudin at the time, which ultimately landed him the role.
12. Breckin Meyer was incredibly excited to land his role as Travis. At that point in time, he recollected telling Entertainment Weekly, “I was going through a slump in my career. I had spent all the money I made from child commercials. I lived above a garage, without heat or hot water, and slept on a mattress on the floor. I had to skateboard over to Seth Green’s place to take showers and do my laundry.”
13. At 17, Silverstone didn’t share Cher’s enthusiasm for fashion, confessing during a 2019 Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo panel that she often found it difficult to identify with that aspect of her character because she usually wore the same green T-shirt and jeans. Even during the initial press run in 1995, she admitted to the Allentown Morning Call that she had to put in a lot of effort to get into this role, as she dislikes wearing nice clothes and prefers black sweats and a T-shirt. She described herself as down-to-earth and a total tomboy.
14. Stacey Dash revealed that figuring out each character’s unique style took an entire week of work. They spent seven days, ten hours a day on fittings, going through numerous clothes. According to her, the most memorable outfit was Dionne’s plaid ensemble with a hat reminiscent of a pretty little cake.
15. In an interview with The Telegraph, Dash mentioned that there was genuine chemistry between her and Murray (Donald Faison before Scrubs). She said, “It wasn’t acting.” To put it another way, the connection on screen was real.
16. Donald Faison admitted that he was smitten with Dash. He told his friends about his crush on her from Mo’ Money. They were thrilled and inquisitive, asking if they would kiss. He replied, “Yes! I’m definitely going to kiss her. And let me tell you, it will be a good one!”
It was Faison’s first screen kiss. As Heckerling shared with the New York Post, after the take, Faison jumped around the set like an excited puppy. He was overjoyed and proud.
17. During the 40-day film shoot in winter 1994, it felt like reliving those carefree high school days, as they aimed to replicate that experience on screen. As Shawn put it, “Filming the movie was akin to attending an innocent party where the game was ‘Let’s Make a Movie’. The cast weren’t necessarily future stars; they were simply enjoying the thrill and humor of the experience itself.” He added, “It was absolutely delightful.
18. Quite frequently, you could find the younger stars socializing in each other’s trailers. As Elisa Donovan (who played the snooty character “Monet” Amber) expressed, “We had a great time throughout, it was like a dream.” It was an exciting period as everyone was starting out.
19. After that, Meyer and Rudd became so close that they lived together at Meyer’s place for quite some time. According to him, he told EW, “We used to watch movies by Corey Haim and Corey Feldman every night, and during the day we tried to find other job opportunities.
20. Carrying the weight of the movie on her youthful shoulders, Silverstone approached her role differently than her fellow cast members. As she put it, “For me, it was work.” The others seemed to enjoy coming and going, but I was in every scene, putting in long hours and feeling drained. I was tired all the time.
21. In a state of exhaustion that left her unable to handle one more task, Alicia shared with The Telegraph about her little dog who often soiled outside the makeup trailer. “People were complaining about stepping in feces,” she recalled. “I had to ask if they could provide a leash or something for him.
Murray’s bald look – a style that prompted Dionne to consider phoning his mother. Meyer disclosed at the 2019 Chicago panel that they left a small amount of hair on the sides of Faison’s head, enough to be visible when filmed wearing a hat.
24. Heckerling made a brief appearance as a bridesmaid in Miss Geist’s wedding scene in the movie. As she expressed to the New York Post, “I adore Amy, so I insisted she be my bridesmaid in the film.” “When I tossed the bouquet, people weren’t fighting hard enough, so Amy had to intervene and shove everyone,” Caplan added, “there’s a shot of her pushing everyone around.
25. Did Heckerling create Cher’s iconic exclamation ‘As if!’ independently? It seems that she might have drawn inspiration from her personal interest in language and the phrase being popularized within certain communities during the early 90s.
26. Among the movie quotes, Heckerling held a soft spot for a passionate statement by Cher during a debate class: “In a quirky way, I’ve always been fond of ‘It does not say RSVP on the Statue of Liberty.'”
27. Building the entire vocabulary took some deliberate exploration. When auditioning the young actors, she would ask for fresh words. This is where she discovered the term ‘going postal.’ As for other terms, ‘Betty’ was inspired by Betty Rubble, and ‘Barney’ was a reference to the question, “How did he manage to get her?
28. One unforgettable scene in the movie stemmed from Silverstone herself. In a thought-provoking discussion about immigration, she accidentally mispronounced Haitians, as director Heckerling recalled to EW, “and everyone rushed up to her to correct her. I had to intervene. It was funnier the way she said it. That was Cher.”
29. Picking a standout moment from the film is quite challenging. For Dash, it was the tennis-court scene where Elisa Donovan says, “My plastic surgeon doesn’t want me doing activity where balls fly at my nose,” to which I respond, “There goes your social life.” Silverstone, on the other hand, enjoys Tai’s iconic putdown: “The way her lips pucker and she delivers it, it cracks me up. That was extremely harsh, Tai.
30. If someone were to inquire, Rudd seems doubtful that Cher and Josh remain a couple (given their California residence rather than Kentucky), but Silverstone is more hopeful. “I wish she’s married to Paul Rudd, has kids, and is passionate about something she adores tremendously,” she suggested to Entertainment Weekly. “Perhaps she’s a professional organizer. Whatever her role may be, I don’t think she’s bothersome anymore.”
Herckerling visualizes her character as extremely conscious of social issues. “First and foremost, she’d advocate for mask-wearing in 2020,” she shared with The A.V Club about the modern Cher. “She would support equality, equal pay, immigration reform, prison reform—the environment, climate change, combating corporations polluting our food, air, and water. Honestly, where do you begin?
