Jessie Takes the Spotlight in ‘Toy Story 5’ Shocker: Not Your Average Cowgirl!

Hooray! Jesse, the yodeling cowgirl character (voiced by Joan Cusack), has been a crucial member of the Toy Story group since her appearance in “Toy Story 2” in 1999. As a vintage pull-string cowgirl doll from the 1950s who was once the star of the “Woody’s Roundup” TV show, she won over many hearts with her heartfelt story about her previous owner Emily (as portrayed in an emotional sequence accompanied by Sarah McLachlan’s song “When She Loved Me”). Following Woody’s (Tom Hanks) guidance in understanding the essence of being a toy – to be enjoyed by a child – and developing feelings for Buzz Lightyear, the Space Ranger action figure (Tim Allen), Jesse became part of Andy’s collection before passing on to a new owner, Bonnie, in “Toy Story 3” (2010).

Allen shared with WIVB Buffalo, New York that the new “Toy Story 5” will primarily focus on Jessie. He mentioned a reunion between Woody and himself, and hinted at an astonishing opening sequence featuring Buzz Lightyear.

1) “Allen mentioned he could provide that for you, but he doesn’t have much else to offer,” he said. In 2019’s Toy Story 4 , Woody found his old flame Bo Peep (Annie Potts), and the story concluded with them saying goodbye to Bonnie’s other toys.

The filmmaker Andrew Stanton, who directed both “Finding Nemo” and “Wall-E,” as well as co-writing “Toy Story 2,” and being part of the original Pixar creative team along with John Lasseter (director of “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2”), Pete Docter (co-story writer), and Joe Ranft (story supervisor) is directing “Toy Story 5.” The screenplay for this movie is by Stanton himself.

It’s clear that the Toy Story series holds a profound emotional significance for Stanton, as he expressed at the D23 convention in Anaheim last year. Through these toys, we’ve all gained insights into concepts like loyalty, belonging, and friendship. He further explained that the Toy Story films have provided a distinctive viewpoint on growing up and dealing with life’s complexities. Moreover, throughout all the Toy Story movies, the primary role of the toys has been to provide support for their child owners. In Toy Story 5, this task becomes even more challenging when our beloved toy gang confronts the latest craze among kids: electronic devices.

Initially, it appeared that the reassembled group – Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, Bullseye, Rex, Slinky Canine, Hamm, and Forky – were all gazing down from Bonnie’s bed while she was engrossed in a tablet.

These days, toys are facing tough rivals such as smartphones, tablets, and advanced technology. Therefore, the new trend is combining toys with technology, as stated by Stanton.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating more revelations about the storyline, but director Stanton has hinted that the movie will introduce an intriguing twist: a horde of fifty defective, commemorative Buzz Lightyear action figures trapped in toy mode. These malfunctioning toys are bound to cause quite a ruckus for all involved, much like the legion of boxed Buzzes we encountered at Al’s Toy Barn back in Toy Story 2.

Since 2018, Dr. John Lasseter, serving as the chief creative officer at Pixar, is co-producing the upcoming fifth Toy Story film with producer Jessica Choi (known for her work on Inside Out 2). Disney and Pixar have announced that Toy Story 5 will hit theaters on June 19, 2026.
