Over the last several years, the Star Wars franchise has taken a break from cinemas, but Lucasfilm is setting things up for its next lineup of films. The studio started Star Wars Celebration Japan with a panel focusing on next year’s The Mandalorian & Grogu, although it turned out to be more of a sneak peek into Star Wars’ future on the big screen. While there was significant focus on the 2027 film, Star Wars: Starfighter, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that multiple Star Wars movies are currently in development. Some projects led by James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and a trilogy from Simon Kinberg are underway. Dave Filoni’s New Republic movie is still being made, but he is prioritizing Ahsoka Season 2 for now.
While specific plot details were not disclosed, numerous sources have provided insights into upcoming movies. Mangold is directing a film focusing on the origins of the Jedi, while Obaid-Chinoy is working on the Rey/New Jedi Order movie. Filoni’s project is described as wrapping up New Republic era storylines that have played out in TV series like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka. The stories for Waititi and Kinberg’s films, however, remain shrouded in mystery. No release dates were announced at Celebration for any of these productions.

Previously in February, Kennedy provided updates regarding some upcoming films. She disclosed that Mangold had to halt the production of Dawn of the Jedi temporarily as he worked on the Bob Dylan biopic titled A Complete Unknown. Having completed that project, Mangold is currently engrossed in writing his Star Wars script. Meanwhile, Waititi, known for his numerous commitments, has delivered a first act that Kennedy appreciates, but the entire script remains unfinished.
Over the coming years, the Star Wars universe will make its way back to cinemas with exciting new projects taking shape. First up in 2026, Jon Favreau’s movie titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu” is set to premiere, followed by May of the next year when Shawn Levy’s film “Star Wars: Starfighter” starring Ryan Gosling will hit the big screen. It’s expected that production on “Starfighter” will start sometime this fall.
One key insight from this is that the projects by Obaid-Chinoy and Kinberg are distinct entities, contrary to earlier speculation that they might compete for the same character, Rey. By November 2024, Lucasfilm was reportedly considering multiple films centered around Rey, with both Kinberg’s trilogy and Obaid-Chinoy’s standalone movie as potential options. It seems these movies no longer pose a conflict with each other. Either Kinberg developed a new concept that didn’t require Rey, or perhaps Obaid-Chinoy’s film serves to set the stage for Kinberg’s trilogy. Furthermore, Waititi’s Star Wars movie is still under consideration. Despite less than stellar receptions to Thor: Love and Thunder and Next Goal Wins, the director’s success with movies like Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, as well as his work on The Mandalorian Season 1 finale, keeps him in favor for delivering an engaging and emotional Star Wars film.
Over time, Lucasfilm has developed a reputation for announcing projects that ultimately didn’t materialize. Some were even officially confirmed in press releases (such as Rian Johnson’s trilogy), but for one reason or another, they never progressed. It remains intriguing to find out which of these films will eventually be produced. Fortunately, Lucasfilm appears to be taking steps to get its movie lineup back on schedule. Here’s hoping all these projects make it to completion. Disney+ has provided a wonderful platform for Lucasfilm to delve into diverse aspects of the Star Wars universe, but the franchise stands out as one of the most cherished film properties due to its timeless appeal. The grandeur of Star Wars is best experienced on the big screen.
