Pedro Pascal has given a peek into his unique approach to playing Reed Richards in Marvel Studio’s upcoming “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” sharing an unanticipated source that sparked his creativity for portraying Mister Fantastic’s brilliant mind. In an interview with ComicBook at the Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo, Pascal discussed his intellectual approach to the character rather than focusing on Reed’s famous elasticity. Known for his physically demanding roles like Din Djarin in “The Mandalorian,” Pascal highlighted the contrast between this ensemble performance and the distinct challenge of embodying the iconic leader of Marvel’s First Family. His remarks emphasize the film’s emphasis on character development and intellect, even amidst the exciting cosmic adventures hinted at by the recent trailer, which provided fans with their initial look at Reed’s powers and the formidable Silver Surfer (played by Julia Garner).
Reed’s physical flexibility is impressive, but it’s his mental prowess that truly defines him,” Pascal explained to us. “I’m going to let you in on a big secret about his character. I was thinking of an octopus, not in terms of physical appearance, but more so its intelligence. I infused this idea into my subconscious. In essence, that’s the most significant revelation I’ve shared with you.” This unconventional comparison suggests a focus on Reed Richards’ intelligence, adaptability, and problem-solving skills, which are often associated with the intelligent cephalopod. It indicates that Pascal intends to explore Reed’s exceptional intellect beyond just his ability to stretch.
Pascal commented thoughtfully when asked about comparing the physical challenges of portraying Reed Richards versus Din Djarin. “You see,” he explained, “Din Djarin’s character requires a lot of physical exertion from a team effort, including Brendan Wayne, Latif Crowder, and others who have worn the armor, but mainly myself and those two gentlemen. However, playing Reed Richards offered me a unique experience – I was tasked with bringing to life a character that is widely recognized, yet has been authored by many before, like the comics’ pages and various evolutions. Yet, our version of Reed also stands alone in its identity. To me, while Reed may stretch physically, it’s his mind that is truly captivating.
Pascal Embraces Reed Richards’ Genius Mind Over Physicality
Pascal’s portrayal of Reed Richards deviates significantly from past live-action versions, which often struggled to strike a balance between the character’s intellectual prowess and his extraordinary physical abilities. Drawing inspiration from one of nature’s smartest creatures, the actor seems to be emphasizing Richards’ scientific genius – an essential aspect that has characterized the character since Stan Lee and Jack Kirby first created him in 1961.
In the movie “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” the team encounters Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). The cunning mind of Pascal, portraying Reed Richards, is expected to be pivotal in resolving the film’s conflicts. In the comics, Richards has often relied on his intelligence instead of physical strength to tackle cosmic threats, such as Galactus. This unconventional approach to superheroism sets the Fantastic Four apart from other teams, making them explorers and problem-solvers rather than typical fighters.
As a cinephile, I find Pascal’s vision of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” all the more captivating due to its confirmation as a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic alternate world. This setting, steeped in Space Age enthusiasm and reminiscent of Jack Kirby’s initial comic artwork, promises a rich landscape for delving into Reed Richards’ trailblazing scientific mindset.
Under the direction of Matt Shakman, the movie titled “The Fantastic Four: Initial Journey” is scheduled for release on July 25, 2025, introducing Marvel’s original family to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
