Six long years have passed since we watched a Star Wars movie in theaters, but the excitement is slowly gathering pace once more. Next year, we’ll be greeted by The Mandalorian and Grogu, followed by a new film featuring Ryan Gosling, directed by Shawn Levy.
Following the conclusion of this year’s Star Wars Celebration held in Japan, we received additional information regarding both projects. The second one even revealed its launch date and title.
At the recent celebration event, duo Gosling and Levy, who were responsible for last year’s successful MCU production of Deadpool & Wolverine, unexpectedly appeared. They unveiled that their upcoming film will be named “Star Wars: Space Fighter”.
The movie production is scheduled for this year, with a release date in theaters on May 28, 2027. The storyline takes place roughly five years following the incidents of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
In a recent appearance, Gosling, who’s set to portray a fresh, unannounced character, expressed his feelings: “Standing here among you all is incredibly inspiring. The abundance of creativity, imagination, and affection in this space is truly remarkable.
It’s incredible how deeply movies can touch us, and this impact is especially noticeable when it comes to our personal favorites. The power behind this emotion is not something mystical but rather the passion of the fans. All we can wish for is that they continue to support us: ‘Let the spirit of fandom always be with us.’
Simultaneously, Levy commented, “We’re just as enthusiastic as you are. There’s undeniably a bond between these tales and their viewers, but we’ve always been part of the viewership. We understand its significance.
It’s been reported by Variety that the movie was penned by Jonathan Tropper, a writer who has contributed to some of Levy’s other films, including The Adam Project, and is also the mind behind Jon Hamm’s Apple TV+ series Your Friends & Neighbors.
In addition to Star Wars: Starfighter, The Mandalorian featuring Grogu, several other Star Wars projects in the pipeline include those led by directors like Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Taika Waititi. Furthermore, a new trilogy is being developed by Simon Kinberg for the franchise.
