One could assume that having a Disney+ subscription eliminates the need to watch Star Wars: A New Hope in the cinema. After all, the streaming platform offers every Star Wars film in chronological order, or at least versions of each movie. However, there exists a “banned” version of the first movie that hasn’t graced theater screens for decades, but this will soon change.
As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Disney+ offers an amazing selection of content, including the iconic Star Wars series. For those who are budget-conscious, they offer an ad-supported plan starting at just $9.99 per month. If you prefer an ad-free experience, it’s available for $15.99 per month. Or, save 16% by pre-paying $159.99 for a whole year of uninterrupted streaming. Don’t miss out on this fantastic deal!
The British Film Institute’s Film on Film Festival is set to begin in June, featuring one of the rare Technicolor prints of the initial theatrical release of “Star Wars: A New Hope,” according to The Telegraph (as reported by THR). This will mark the first public viewing of this version since 1978. The simultaneous screening was made possible through discussions between Disney and Lucasfilm. To be honest, I’m contemplating purchasing a ticket, particularly because it promises to omit from the movie the Han and Jabba scene that I find unpleasant.
What Is The “Banned” Cut Of Star Wars: A New Hope?
The original theatrical release of “Star Wars: A New Hope” is prohibited due to George Lucas not considering it the best version of the film. The more commonly available version, often referred to as the special edition, contains extra scenes and modifications to certain movie moments that were initially left out, plus some changes like Greedo shooting at Han Solo first, a detail that many find unsettling, and another scene that gives me a shudder every time I watch it.
I’d Make A Trip To See Star Wars: A New Hope Without Jabba And Han’s Meeting
I can tolerate most alterations in the recent version of “Star Wars: A New Hope,” but nothing frustrates me more than witnessing Han Solo’s scenes with Jabba the Hutt, especially when he enters the Millennium Falcon. During their exchange, Jabba, accompanied by Boba Fett, brings up Han’s substantial debt. Instead of showing concern, Han responds rudely to this interstellar crime boss, and even goes so far as to trample on his tail as a show of disrespect.

The Best And Worst Thing About Every Star Wars Movie
In this scene, it’s almost inconceivable that Han Solo, known for his quick wit but not foolishness, would act so out of character. After all, Jabba the Hutt is a formidable crime lord in the Outer Rim, with an elite bounty hunter like Boba Fett as his bodyguard. If this were to occur in reality, it’s hard to imagine that Jabba would’ve overlooked the debt and let Han live, or not have started a galaxy-wide search for his missing money with at least one less appendage.
In the film “Return of the Jedi”, Jabba appears weak compared to his earlier portrayals. However, by this point in the story, he has clearly regained his power. He possesses Han Solo encased in carbonite, employs C-3PO as a translator, and even shares a scene with Leia that is less off-putting than her kiss with Luke. This inconsistency has bothered me for quite some time, to the extent that I’m contemplating a journey to the UK specifically to watch the movie without this particular scene.
1) Attendees at the exclusive screenings are strongly encouraged to sign in and express their opinions about the event. For those who didn’t get an invite, let’s just appreciate we don’t have special versions of the Sequel Trilogy on sale yet – though who knows what the future might hold? Perhaps it’s best not to fuel J.J. Abrams’ creativity any further in that regard.
