In most instances when a Hozier song is played during the finale of a TV show, it usually signifies an unfavorable turn of events. Over eight seasons, the series 9-1-1 has been careful to preserve its primary characters’ safety. Despite numerous near misses, no significant changes have affected the core cast. However, episode 15 of season 8 titled “Lab Rats” indicates that showrunner Tim Minear is ready to step away from the safe approach.
The character Chimney seemed to be on the verge of being taken out of the lab in a coffin-like bag, but fans of 9-1-1 have grown accustomed to accepting that death isn’t always a certainty. Characters have been shot, struck by lightning, and even had their heads impaled, yet they’ve managed to survive. This has made 9-1-1 a reassuring show for those unwilling to watch a main character perish. However, it’s also taken away the sense of real danger from what’s supposed to be a high-stakes series about first responders. In an unexpected twist, Chimney manages to pull through at the last moment, but the true devastation comes when Bobby Nash reveals he’s already been infected. The death of Bobby is the boldest move 9-1-1 has ever made. For the first time, no one can predict what will happen next.
Season 8, Episode 15 Highlights One of 9-1-1’s Best Pairings
Athena and Buck Race Against Time to Find the Evil Scientist
In this episode, 9-1-1 appears to follow its usual routine, but while Chimney’s life is at stake, viewers can rely on Athena Grant and Evan “Buck” Buckley to turn things around. It’s always a delight when Athena is involved due to Angela Bassett’s performance, but teaming up with Buck makes it even more extraordinary. Athena and Buck, despite their contrasting personalities, excel in bringing out the best in each other when justice calls for it.
Athena successfully made it out of the lab. Unfortunately, there isn’t much good news in this particular episode.

The Death of a Protagonist Sets a 9-1-1 Record
Due to Athena’s assistance, Chimney manages to receive the cure – quite timely as he was on the verge of losing an excessive amount of blood due to a severe nosebleed. Kudos to the special effects team on 9-1-1 for creating such a revolting visual. However, right when everyone is about to leave, Bobby finds himself trapped in the lab at the last moment. He removes his helmet to reveal that he too has been infected all this time and was hoping the antiviral would go to Chimney first. “There’s only one dose,” Bobby tells a worried Athena, explaining that nothing he said could alter the situation.
What ensues is undeniably poignant, emotional, and distressing – words that barely scratch the surface of the passing of a cherished TV character. The departure of Peter Krause’s and Angela Bassett’s characters resonates deeply, not just due to the powerful narrative, but also their exceptional acting abilities. Their farewell scene seems less like Athena and Bobby saying goodbye and more like Bassett and Krause bidding adieu, such is the raw intensity of Athena’s desperate plea for help and Bobby’s quiet resolve to save his team despite not wanting to leave her. It feels as if we are witnessing their personal goodbyes rather than fictional characters.
Playing Hozier’s “Work Song” at Bobby’s last moments is a powerful selection, as it symbolizes a man drawing strength from love during his most difficult times – a reflection of Bobby’s journey throughout the series. The emphasis on Bobby’s personal life this season now seems fitting given that he reconnected with his mother and brother, mourned his deceased children in “Lab Rats,” and found solace in Athena when he needed it most. Having her by his side until his death is a poignant end to his story, but what makes it even more touching is the scene of him praying on the table. Bobby’s faith, which kept him going before Athena entered his life, played a crucial role in sustaining him throughout his trials.
What Does 9-1-1 Look Like Without Peter Krause as Bobby Nash?
In the Absence of Bobby, 9-1-1 Heads Into Unknown Territory
Regarding these recent developments, it’s clear that Bobby is not merely an important aspect of the 9-1-1 storyline, but one of the key figures who has significantly shaped its narrative. Alongside Athena, Bobby and Athena are the principal characters driving the plot of 9-1-1, although other characters have expanded their roles over time.
It was inevitable that 9-1-1 would eventually have to eliminate a character to maintain an engaging narrative. The show’s tendency towards safety and predictability was starting to stifle its storytelling potential. However, the decision to terminate Peter Krause’s character – one of the leading stars in the series – is quite a significant leap.
Introducing the concept of character death by starting with a lesser-known character like Eddie could have created just as dramatic an impact as Bobby’s departure did, without jeopardizing the show’s core essence to the same extent.
In most instances, it’s up to the actor to decide when to leave a television show. However, in the unusual case of 9-1-1, Bobby’s demise was a creative decision made by Tim Minear. In an interview following Bobby’s death, Minear stated that if he were going to make such a move, it needed to have a profound impact on every character’s storyline. The final three episodes of Season 8 will provide both the remaining characters and viewers with a chance to mourn. Nevertheless, taking the life of a main character is a bold choice, especially for the first major death in the series – particularly this main character.
In no realm did it appear plausible for the world of 9-1-1 to function without Bobby. He was the unifying element, tying everyone’s tales together, even in minor roles. His demise, though sorrowful, carries a certain logic. Now, emergencies bring lasting impacts on first responders. Athena and the 118 firefighters confront a grief they’ve never experienced before. It was quite impactful to write off the show’s cornerstone, but 9-1-1 managed something extraordinary: it caught viewers off guard.
9-1-1 airs Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. on .
