Warning: This article contains major spoilers for 9-1-1’s April 17 episode “Lab Rats.”
This was an emergency call Angela Bassett never expected.
Following the heart-wrenching April 17 episode of 9-1-1, where Fire Captain Bobby Nash, portrayed by Peter Krause, succumbed to a lethal virus after being trapped in a lab with his team, Angela expressed her initial disbelief upon learning about the unfortunate demise of her onscreen spouse.
She shared with The Hollywood Reporter that she found it hard to believe it was Bobby when showrunner Tim Minear revealed the storyline to her. In other words, she was completely taken aback and couldn’t believe it, as if she had been left speechless – a moment of great surprise for her.
As a lifestyle expert, I can empathize with the difficulty in accepting a shift in dynamic when it comes to fictional relationships, such as the bond between Athena and Bobby that I’ve come to know on screen.
In the interview published on April 18, Angela mentioned, “Their connection over the last four to five years has been truly amazing and incredibly strong. Frankly, I didn’t anticipate this. No one did.
The actress who played Black Panther also shared the instant when they first met, having learned about it following the news.
She explained, ‘Our gazes met, a silence enveloping us. It’s that kind of moment when eyes connect and words fail, leaving us embracing tightly instead. Then, we both shook our heads, and he, ever considerate, provided comfort to everyone present. Despite his own emotions swirling, he took the time to console each one of us.’
Indeed, spectators are also going through their own emotional processing following Bobby’s tragic demise, as he and Athena bid each other farewell through a glass partition.
She clarified that while acting in the scene, she was portraying a character, but specifically as Angela. In other words, she was playing a role as a human being. This moment was particularly profound, and both our emotions were deeply felt throughout every take. No matter how many times we repeated it, the authenticity and reality remained.
As an ardent devotee, I’d like to share my thoughts on this: “Despite the challenges, there was a profoundly purifying aspect to it. You see, we’re all human, and through our characters, we forged a deep connection. This extended beyond the screen, into our professional bond. It was an extraordinary moment, one that transcended life itself.
Peter, meanwhile, understands fans who are mourning his character.
He stated to Variety on April 17 that “Many fans are disappointed by this loss, and they have every reason to feel that way. This is indeed a loss.” However, he added, “This wasn’t just a daring creative decision on an adventurous series. Bobby Nash was written as a sacrifice, and he was designed for exactly this role.
Additionally, he explained that the death of his character serves as a tribute to the true-life heroes that he and the fellow cast members symbolize in the show.
In a similar vein, the former star of Parenthood stated, “First responders put their lives on the line for us every day, enabling others to live another day.” The character’s storyline in 9-1-1 serves as a tribute to them. We salute all the brave individuals who perform these perilous jobs and tirelessly work to ensure our safety.

Prior to the commencement of the third season for “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” actress Renee Rapp revealed her decision to depart from the show’s cast in the Max series.
She shared on social media in July 2023, “College friends took me to Los Angeles and introduced me to some of my dearest companions.” And now, more than two years later – it’s brought me these wonderful people and this community.
As a devoted fan, I’m sharing that Mindy Kaling, one of the show’s creators, confirmed Rapp’s departure. She expressed her deep affection for Rapp in an Instagram post, saying, “We adore @reneerapp so much and will undeniably feel sad to bid farewell to Leighton Murray!” Before wrapping up, she hinted at Rapp’s flourishing music career, expressing excitement about seeing our friend on tour!

On The Drew Barrymore Show in December 2022, Pompeo expressed the need for a change, stating, “I need to shake things up a bit.” At age 53, she explained that her mind is similar to scrambled eggs and craves novelty. Just as one can’t solve the New York Times crossword puzzle every day, Pompeo feels the need for something fresh and exciting.
The actor who played Superman in Batman vs. Superman, Henry Cavill, has announced he is leaving Netflix’s fantasy series after its third season. Liam Hemsworth, known for other roles, will take over as Geralt starting from the fourth season and may continue beyond that.
In October 2022, Henry Cavill posted on Instagram, expressing that his role as Geralt of Rivia has been a blend of monstrous challenges and thrilling escapades. Sadly, he will be relinquishing the medallion and swords for Season 4.
2022 marked the departure of original cast member Jesse Lee Soffer, who bid farewell to his cherished role as Detective Jay Halstead after a decade-long stint on the show.
As the weeks rolled by, crafting each hour-long drama was more than just work – it was a heartfelt endeavor shared by every soul involved in this remarkable series. In a statement following my farewell scene on NBC’s police procedural on October 5th, I couldn’t help but swell with pride as I reminisced about the time spent portraying Det. Jay Halstead. This role has been an integral part of me, and I will forever cherish the memories.

As it happened, Elizabeth Keen wouldn’t get the opportunity to learn about Raymond Reddington’s true identity because Megan Boone decided to depart from NBC’s The Blacklist at the end of season eight. Regrettably, her character was terminated before she could lay eyes on the letter that would have unveiled everything. Boone concluded Liz’s journey in 2021 with an Instagram post where she referred to the experience as a “dream.
In the second season of “Bridgerton”, there was one less duke, as Rege-Jean Page, who had captivated audiences with his stellar performance in Netflix’s hugely popular drama, chose not to return in 2021, causing a stir among fans everywhere.
Later on, he clarified to Vanity Fair, “I took on a task, completed it, and then moved on to other tasks. That’s essentially the gist of it. I wish there was more excitement or glamour attached to it.
Ruby Rose initially appeared in the Arrowverse crossover in 2018 and subsequently played the lead role of Kate Kane (also known as Batwoman) for one season on The CW drama. This marked a historical milestone as Batwoman, who came out as a lesbian in a significant TV event, became the first openly gay superhero to star in her own show. However, just two days after the season finale aired in 2020, Rose announced her departure from the role. The part was subsequently taken over by Javicia Leslie, who will be portraying Ryan Wilder and assuming control of the Batcave in season two.
Later on in season two, Kate got a bit of a face swap and returned played by Wallis Day.
In 2020, at the conclusion of its fifth season, America Ferrera chose to part ways with the TV show Superstore, thereby vacating her role as Cloud 9’s manager and leaving a significant gap in the series. Despite this, due to the pandemic, she made appearances in the first two episodes of season six. When it was decided that season six would be the last, Ferrera returned for the series finale to ensure that Amy and Jonah (played by Ben Feldman) received a satisfying conclusion to their storylines.
In the finale of the fourth season of Syfy’s series “The Magicians,” Jason Ralph’s character, Quentin, managed to rescue Eliot (Hale Appleman), but ultimately gave up his own life in the process. Although the show often deals with deceased characters due to its title, Ralph did not reappear for the fifth and final season.
Ahead of the final season, Arrow‘s Emily Bett Rickards announced her exit in a poem of sorts.
Felicity and I have always been very close, but after the first to the seventh [something], we’ll be taking our leave from you,” she said.
She did, however, return for a guest appearance in the show’s 2020 series finale.
As a lifestyle expert looking back on my journey, I bid farewell to “The Walking Dead” in 2018, after lengthy contract discussions. Though I graced a few episodes of season nine, my character Maggie Greene was mysteriously absent following a significant time leap. The producers held onto hope that I’d reappear in some form during season 10, and when my brief stint on “Whiskey Cavalier” ended, their wish came true. In October 2020, I made a triumphant comeback in the 16th episode of the current season.
Immediately following the departures of Cohan and Andrew Lincoln from the zombie drama, Gurira also announced her exit. She initially joined the AMC series in season three as the sword-carrying Michonne, and her final appearance was featured in a season 10 episode that aired in March 2020.
In both season one and serving as a main character in season two, Nicollette Sheridan portrayed the famous Alexis Carrington. In 2019, prior to the start of season three, she made plans to leave the CW reboot to devote time to her ailing mother.
George Eads departed from the CBS remake in 2019, during the third season’s run. At that point, he shared his wish to step away and dedicate more moments to his loved ones.
The television series “Lethal Weapon,” starring Fox, has often seen its cast members departing. Notably, Clayne Crawford was dismissed following the second season, and in October 2018, Damon Wayans, his co-star, announced his intention to leave the popular drama after completing the initial 13 episodes of the third season. He stated, “I’m planning to quit the show in December once we finish the initial 13, so I’m not sure about their plans, but that’s what I plan to do.” Wayans, a 58-year-old diabetic, works long hours of 16 per day and expressed feeling “too old for this.
They didn’t have to develop a new plan because the series concluded at the end of its third season instead.
During the ninth season of Shameless, Cameron Monaghan’s character was imprisoned. In real life, after spending nine years on the show, Monaghan was eager to pursue other projects. However, in a surprising turn of events for television, he agreed to return for season 10 and was back when the series resumed for its eleventh and final season in December 2020.

He highlighted her significant contributions to the show’s success, from her compelling portrayal of Fiona to her leadership on set and directing several episodes. They are currently working diligently to create a season nine finale for Shameless that offers a fitting Gallagher-style farewell to Fiona, acknowledging Emmy’s exceptional work. Partings can be bittersweet when an integral member of the ensemble decides to leave, but they keep the door open for Fiona to revisit or return to the family home. John looks forward to continuing the tales of this unpredictable family on Shameless, and they will all miss Emmy and her memorable Fiona.
Chelsea Peretti initially featured in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” when it first aired on NBC, but she didn’t stay for the entire series. In a series of tweets in 2018, the actress revealed her decision to depart from the comedy, although she expressed her intention to return. Interestingly, she modeled her farewell message after Sara Rossum’s departure letter from “Shameless.” Peretti gave birth to a son with husband Jordan Peele in 2017. Her character was on maternity leave and missed several episodes during season five.
As a die-hard fan, I’d put it this way: After nine grueling seasons of battling the undead alongside my on-screen family on The Walking Dead, I bid farewell to the grime, gore, and chaos. At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2018, I shared that this remarkable cast had become the closest thing to a surrogate family I could ever dream of. However, it’s time for me to return home to my real family, as they say, “absence makes the heart grow fonder,” and I yearn to be with them.
15 long years ago, I faithfully donned my lab coat and graced the set of NCIS as Abby Sciuto. In 2018, however, I felt a profound call from above to embark on a new journey. The universe spoke loudly, and it was undeniably clear that this was the right moment for me to move on. After much contemplation, I chose to break the news myself via Twitter, as I didn’t want the departure of my beloved character to be sensationalized or turned into a mere TV plot twist. Leaving Abby behind is not just about creating shock value; it’s about embracing a new chapter in life.
Back in 2018, it was revealed that actress Willa Holland’s departure from The CW’s Arrow was a planned move. According to showrunner Marc Guggenheim, Holland requested a decrease in her episode appearances and eventually wanted to be written off during season six. Interestingly, her character Thea Queen’s exit coincided with the return of her former love, Roy Harper (Colton Haynes), which led them on an adventure to eliminate harmful Lazarus Pits discovered by Thea’s late father.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I find it fascinating to share insights about my personal journey. You may recognize me from the hit series “Battlestar Galactica,” but let me tell you about another exciting chapter in my career – my time on “Hawaii Five-0.” Regrettably, I had to bid farewell to the show before its eighth season in 2017. This decision was not an easy one, but it came after lengthy negotiations for pay parity with my fellow co-stars unfortunately proved unsuccessful, alongside my costar Daniel Dae Kim.
Later on, Park expressed gratitude for the insights gained, yet emphasized making decisions based on personal integrity. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he added, “I understand that everyone is striving hard, and they all approach situations from different perspectives, rooted in their unique backgrounds.
Similar to Park, Kim decided to depart from the CBS drama during the transition between seasons seven and eight. In a heartfelt Facebook post, Kim expressed his struggle with the decision to leave, mentioning that he was open to returning, but ultimately, “CBS and I couldn’t reach an agreement on a new contract.
At the end of season four, the NBC drama saw Sophia Bush’s character contemplating a job offer from the FBI in New York, thereby leaving the show’s Chicago setting. In December 2018, the actress disclosed that she chose to leave the series due to persistent and abusive treatment.
Following a four-season stint on the HBO comedy, T.J. Miller exited in 2017, describing it as a “natural conclusion.” He explained to Entertainment Weekly, “Additionally, I find it intriguing to depart a show at its peak. It’s fascinating for me to observe how the series will evolve and transform with the departure of this character.
Following a single season on CBS’s comedy series, there were signs of significant changes to come. Erinn Hayes, who portrayed Kevin James’ wife, departed in 2017 as part of a creative overhaul. Yet, based on her tweet, it appears the decision was not mutual. “Indeed, I was let go from the show,” Hayes shared on Twitter. “It’s very sad, as season 1 was a fantastic experience for me. Thank you for all the support from our wonderful fans.
After that, Kevin continued his journey, particularly with his co-star from the former show “King of Queens,” Leah Remini. Later on, CBS decided to discontinue the series entirely.
