The highly anticipated series “Daredevil: Born Again” made its debut on Disney+ on March 4th, signifying the comeback of Matt Murdock after a decade since the initial Netflix release of the show. The team behind the scenes, including Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead, Michael Cuesta, Jeffrey Nachmanoff, and David Boyd, recognized the significance of this return and carefully worked on integrating Daredevil into the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe, thereby establishing the new series’ events as official. Interestingly, an early version of “Daredevil: Born Again” was previously filmed prior to the 2023 WGA strikes; however, during this period, the creative elements underwent a substantial transformation.
When revising the series, the directorial crew looked back at the initial, action-packed opening scene and discovered that their original version fell short compared to the final product they created.
The Original Draft Had Less of an Emotional Impact for Both Fans and Daredevil Himself
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the show’s directors spoke about the shocking demise of Foggy Nelson in the series and how it developed from its initial conception. Initially, Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll, who play Matt Murdock’s best friends, Foggy Nelson and Karen Page respectively, were not initially part of the show. However, Foggy’s untimely death was still a crucial aspect of the storyline, happening off-screen. After undergoing a creative makeover, the team decided that Foggy and Karen played significant roles in Matt Murdock’s life, leading to Henson and Woll being brought back to reprise their roles. With the return of beloved characters enhancing the dynamic between Nelson, Murdock, and Page, there came a poignant adaptation of Foggy’s death.
In the first episode of the series, I find myself at our usual hangout, Josie’s bar. Foggy gets a call from one of his clients, prompting him to step outside. As he does, my heightened senses pick up on the sound of a sniper’s gun click, but I’m unable to get out in time to prevent what happens next. Foggy is shot and lies bleeding on the pavement with Karen by his side. In a flash, I leap onto the rooftops, transforming into Daredevil, to pursue the shooter – none other than Benjamin Poindexter, also known as Bullseye.
In the intense fight that followed, Matt kept track of Foggy’s heartbeat, listening as it grew weaker and weaker until it ceased entirely, indicating that his dear friend had passed away. Overwhelmed by grief, Matt hurled Bullseye from the roof, with the aim of avenging Foggy’s death. This tragic sequence of events led Matt Murdock to reveal his hidden life as Daredevil.
In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Aaron Moorhead elaborated on the intricate details put into creating Foggy’s passing scene.
The filmmaker explained that we had been discussing the specifics of his character’s death and what might happen in his last moments. It’s not just about lying down and stopping to breathe; it’s much more complex. They wondered about his relationship with the afterlife, especially since his best friend is Catholic. Later, as they planned out the fight between Daredevil and Bullseye, they realized that they were depicting the death of one of their beloved characters from one of their favorite shows. This realization made them feel like intruders in a way.
They went on to say, “Regarding Elden, who joined us briefly, we began pondering, ‘Do we truly deserve this?’ Yet, he consented as long as we approached it with great care, ensuring it wasn’t just sensational. If this plot point reverberated throughout the series and was the driving force behind Matt’s actions for the remainder of the show, then we would be justified in including it.
The emotional impact of Foggy’s death on Matt Murdock and Daredevil would have been less profound if it had only been shown indirectly. Instead, his death was a pivotal moment that left Matt’s life in ruins, establishing the tone for the series and presenting him with significant emotional turmoil to overcome before he could resume his role as Daredevil.
