Doctor Who: How the Doctor Beat Mr Ring-a-Ding with Light!

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Doctor Who episode Lux.

Beware – with new Doctor Who episode Lux comes a new addition to the Pantheon of Gods!

In the most recent installment, The Doctor, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa, and their new companion Belinda Chandra (played by Varada Sethu), embarked on a journey to return circuitously to May 24th, 2025. They chose to go back to 1950s Miami as part of their detour.

However, upon finding an abandoned cinema that has mysteriously lost 15 individuals, and a chilling animated character named Mr. Ring-a-Ding, brought to life by none other than Alan Cumming, they realize something catastrophic must have occurred.

Here’s everything you need to know about what went down in Lux and how it ended.

Doctor Who – Lux ending explained: How did the Doctor defeat Mr Ring-a-Ding?

The Doctor defeated Mr Ring-a-Ding, AKA the god Lux, by giving him everything he wanted – light.

Previously within this show, it came to light that the being was none other than Lux, a deity who belongs to the group of divine entities known as the Pantheon. This particular god derives his strength from light and it’s through this radiance that he grows stronger.

Later in the episode, when Belinda and Mr Pye loaded the films (notably, these rolls contained highly explosive celluloid) and detonated them, causing the cinema walls to collapse, Lux expanded beyond measure, turning into limitless light, transcending the boundaries of existence and nonexistence.

It appears that Lux has reached an ending, though this may just be temporary. Interestingly, the character hasn’t met his demise; instead, he transformed into a deity – becoming both invisible and immaterial. This is what Belinda observes.

As a film enthusiast, I must admit that I haven’t seen much of Lux lately, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t in the future. After all, the chance of a comeback can never truly be dismissed.

How did the Doctor and Belinda escape the film?

The Doctor and Belinda managed to break free from the movie they were stuck in by igniting an internal fire, effectively setting themselves free.

Following Lux transforming both the Doctor and Belinda into living characters, Belinda confesses that she is petrified and doubts if the Doctor can ever bring her back home; this revelation adds complexity to her character, making her appear more three-dimensional.

Together, they confess uncomfortable realities to one another, transforming them back into their three-dimensional counterparts. However, they remain trapped within the confines of a cinematic experience.

In a particularly self-referential scene, they stepped beyond the television screen, encountering actual fans of Doctor Who in reality.

They figure out that they need to halt the movie and destroy it, which in turn ignites the reel and grants them freedom. Consequently, both manage to flee, albeit the Doctor sustains a burned hand in the process.

What does the Doctor’s bigeneration energy do?

After the Doctor’s double regeneration, the leftover energy aids in healing his injured hand; however, it simultaneously begins to construct a terrifying physical form for Lux.

In this scenario, Lux takes hold of the Doctor and starts to draw in dual-generational energy, expanding in size and becoming more tangible with every passing second – but then, Belinda and Mr Pye come to the rescue by detonating the movie, effectively putting an end to Lux’s growth.

On the 26th of April, 2025, the next installment of Doctor Who’s season 15 will be available. You can stream it starting from 8 am on BBC iPlayer, while it will air on BBC One at 7:20 pm.
