Warning: Spoilers ahead for Doctor Who episode Lux.
In the latest episode of Doctor Who, the Pantheon of Gods makes a surprising reappearance, this time accompanied by a malevolent animated figure.
In a surprising twist, the lively animated character Mr. Ring-a-Ding, voiced by Alan Cumming, unveils his true identity as Lux Imperator, the divine being of light and one of the Pantheon. He then attempts to seize the residual bigeneration energy from The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa), which is associated with light.
Luckily, the Doctor and Belinda (Varada Sethu) successfully overpower Lux, thanks in part to Reginald Pye (Linus Roache). However, it seems that the Pantheon may reappear again in the future.
Here’s everything you need to know about them!
What is the Pantheon in Doctor Who?
The Pantheon refers to a collection of divine or supernatural entities, each with a specific role, who are dedicated to shaping and disrupting the fabric of existence as we know it.
It consists of:
- Lux
- The Celestial Toymaker
- Maestro
- Sutekh
- The Mara
- The Trickster
- Reprobate
- Malice, Mischief and Misery
- Gods of Skin and Shame and Secrets
- Incensor
- Dread and Doubt
Read on for more information about the gods we’ve seen so far.
Lux

Lux Imperator, who is voiced by Alan Cumming, assumes the guise of a cartoon character known as Mr. Radiant Trickster in this tale.
The Doctor and Belinda overcame him by immersing him in radiant light, rendering him both invisible and incapable of physical interaction.
The Celestial Toymaker

In the series, the character portrayed first by Michael Gough, later by Neil Patrick Harris, is an otherworldly entity famed for crafting puzzles and snares, often manipulating humans as if they were toys.
As a devoted Doctor Who fan, I once found myself in an extraordinary encounter with the enigmatic Toymaker, a foe who pits wit against wit. Instead of engaging in complex intellectual battles, the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors (David Tennant and Jodie Whittaker) decided to outsmart him in a humble game – a game of catch! Yes, you heard it right, a simple game of catch! And just as I’ve witnessed countless times on my screen, they managed to win, leaving the Toymaker dumbfounded. The Giggle proved that even in the most ordinary of games, the Doctors can triumph over adversity and save the day.
Maestro

In my perspective as a movie enthusiast, the captivating character of Maestro, brilliantly portrayed by Jinkx Monsoon, embodies the divine maestro of music itself. With an enchanting sway over every tune in the cosmos, this character is a mesmerizing spectacle to witness on screen.
On Sunday, The Doctor and Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) triumphed over Maestro in “The Devil’s Chord”. Assisted by none other than the legendary Beatles, they successfully played the one unique chord capable of imprisoning a deity within their piano.
Sutekh

In simpler terms, we can say that Sutekh is an influential character from the Osiran pantheon, known as the deity of death. He made his debut on Doctor Who back in 1975 and was recently brought back to life in the story titled The Legend of Ruby Sunday, with Gabriel Woolf once again lending his voice to the character.
In the Empire of Death, the Doctor managed to outmaneuver Sutekh, also known as the One Who Waits, by pulling him into the time vortex and reversing the fatalities he had orchestrated.
The Trickster

The Trickster is the main antagonist in Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Although the details about his background remain somewhat mysterious, it is certain that he possesses immortality, similar to Sutekh, and is associated with the ‘Pantheon of Discord’, a collective of powerful beings resembling gods, who were exiled from the recognized cosmos.
The Deceiver, often referred to as the divine architect of traps, engages in agreements aimed at altering historical events, thriving on the ensuing disorder and confusion that inevitably arise.
The Mara
The Mara, previously seen in classic serials Kinda and Snakedance, is the god of beasts.
Doctor Who is available to stream on BBC iPlayer in the UK and Disney+ internationally.
