For several decades, Kappei Yamaguchi has lent his voice to the vast Grand Line, bringing vibrancy to One Piece’s Usopp that sets him apart among Luffy and his comrades. Despite the formidable strength of the Straw Hat crew members like Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji, Usopp has consistently proven his worth as a swashbuckler more times than can be easily counted. In a recent interview, Yamaguchi discussed the disparity in power between Usopp and his fellow pirates, and whether he believes the Straw Hat trickster deserves an upgrade as the shonen series approaches its climactic finale.
At Mumbai Comic Con 2025, Yamaguchi discussed his role in Eiichiro Oda’s masterpiece, “One Piece”. Dispelling the notion that Usopp required a Devil Fruit or Haki to be a valuable member of the Thousand Sunny, he stated, “I believe Usopp is cool enough as he currently stands. I hope he remains true to his character in future works, and I’m confident I will continue to enjoy portraying him this way.” Fans of “One Piece” understand that even without Devil Fruit powers, Usopp has proven himself a formidable character under various situations.
The Perfect Usopp
With over two and a half decades of portraying Usopp in countless episodes and movies, Kappei feels well-suited for embodying this anime character. “After 25 years, I feel like I’ve found my match in this role. It’s the closest character to who I am today.
Interestingly, it’s not just Usopp that Yamaguchi has played throughout his extensive career in anime; he’s also given voice to some of the most iconic characters from the medium. To name a few, he’s breathed life into L from Death Note, Shigekiyo from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Inuyasha from Inuyasha, and Fu from Super Dragon Ball Heroes. With One Piece nearing its conclusion, there’s no doubt that Kappei still has plenty of opportunities to continue excelling in the anime industry.
Usopp’s Curtain Call
In the climactic arc of One Piece, Usopp may not personally engage in battles against the World Government on Future Island, but an important dream of his has been fulfilled. Creator Eiichiro Oda has managed to transport both Usopp and the Straw Hat Pirates to Elbaf, the giant’s homeland that has long intrigued Usopp since the early days of the shonen series. However, the realization of this dream does not guarantee a peaceful visit, as Elbaf is grappling with its own struggles that Luffy and his companions must confront.
