In a somewhat playful connection to history, the Pirates of the Caribbean series has often drawn inspiration for its characters. With the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 6 on the horizon, these five historical pirates would make fascinating additions:
1. Bartholomew Roberts (also known as Black Bart) – Known for his successful career as a pirate captain, Roberts was active in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, amassing an estimated fortune of £300,000 during his reign.
2. Anne Bonny – A female pirate who sailed with Calico Jack Rackham, she is famous for her exploits during the Golden Age of Piracy in the early 18th century.
3. William Kidd – Known as “Captain Kidd,” he was a privateer turned pirate who was hanged in 1701 after his capture. His legend has endured, and many believe that he hid treasure somewhere along the east coast of America.
4. Blackbeard (Edward Teach) – Though already featured in On Stranger Tides, Blackbeard’s exploits make him a natural fit for further Pirates of the Caribbean adventures.
5. Thomas Tew – An English pirate who operated during the early 18th century, Tew was known for capturing a Spanish treasure fleet and amassing an enormous fortune.
By incorporating these real-life characters into the Pirates of the Caribbean series, the franchise could bring even more excitement and authenticity to its storytelling.
As the highly anticipated sixth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean, featuring Margot Robbie, approaches, there’s a possibility for the franchise to introduce some fresh pirate characters from history. The Pirates of the Caribbean series is set during the so-called “Golden Age of Piracy” in the early 18th century, making it ripe for appearances by some of the legendary pirates active in the early 1700s. Given the secrecy surrounding the upcoming sequel, there’s plenty of room for speculation. Personally, I’m excited to see these five historical sea legends make their Pirates of the Caribbean debut.
5. Anne Bonny
Bonny Is Arguably The Most Famous Female Pirate In History
In the Pirates of the Caribbean series, while Elizabeth Turner (Keira Knightley) shares some similarities with Anne Bonny, the movies have yet to feature the real-life famous female pirate. Known for her association with Calico Jack Rackham and Mary Read, Anne Bonny was a significant figure in piracy history. She often disguised herself as a man during her career in piracy. The trio sailed together on a ship called the William for approximately a year before their capture and eventual execution by the governor of Jamaica. Although Pirates of the Caribbean already has several strong female characters, adding Anne Bonny could add an authentic touch to the franchise.
4. John “Calico Jack” Rackham
Calico Jack Sailed With Charles Vane, Anne Bonny, & Mary Read
Just like Anne Bonny, the historical pirate John “Calico Jack” Rackham has already been hinted in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Previously, Calico Jack served as one inspiration for Captain Jack Sparrow. The upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean movie could delve into Calico Jack’s past as a quartermaster under Charles Vane, or it might concentrate more on his escapades with Anne Bonny and Mary Read. The TV show Black Sails has already shown that Calico Jack’s story is filled with action and intrigue, making him an excellent candidate for Pirates of the Caribbean 6. If handled correctly, Calico Jack could potentially take over the role once played by Will Turner (Orlando Bloom).
3. Izzy Hands
Izzy Hands Was Blackbeard’s First Mate & Eventual Captain Of The Adventure
In the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Blackbeard has made an appearance, but his right-hand man and first mate, Israel “Izzy” Hands, is yet to be introduced. Izzy Hands served loyally as Blackbeard’s first mate for years, eventually becoming the captain of one of Blackbeard’s ships, the Adventure. While Black Sails and Our Flag Means Death have delved into Izzy Hands’ true story, Pirates of the Caribbean has an opportunity to further enrich his historical legacy. Notably, Izzy was a villain in Black Sails, and he could potentially play a similar role in Pirates of the Caribbean 6.
2. Stede Bonnet
Bonnet Was Better Known As “The Gentleman Pirate” After Giving Up His Life Of Nobility
In the film “Dead Men Tell No Tales”, Stede Bonnet is briefly mentioned but not fully introduced. Known as “The Gentleman Pirate”, Stede Bonnet abandoned his noble life to take up piracy on the high seas (as detailed by Smithsonian Mag). Interestingly, Bonnet’s tale has already been depicted in the series “Our Flag Means Death”, showcasing both his humor and excitement, a crucial mix for “POTC”. Introducing Bonnet among hardened pirates could bring an intriguing dynamic to “POTC”, offering the potential for engaging character development.
1. Black Caesar
Black Caesar Was A Stand-In For African Pirates Across Decades
In essence, the ideal pirate character for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 isn’t a singular individual but rather a collective legend known as Black Caesar. This figure was more renowned than other pirates during that period because he encompassed several African pirates who shared the same name. There are numerous conflicting accounts about Black Caesar, ranging from him being executed following Blackbeard’s demise to him amassing wealth and instilling fear as a pirate captain in his own right. Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has a unique chance, through Black Caesar, to craft any narrative it desires while simultaneously highlighting a group of historical pirates that are frequently underrepresented.
It’s uncertain if Pirates of the Caribbean 6 will feature any of these real-life pirates, but it would be a smart move for the series. After all, history, particularly piracy history, is often more extraordinary than fiction and ideal for adaptation. This article merely touches on some of these characters’ stories, leaving plenty of room for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 to delve deeper and create captivating new characters. Here’s hoping that the franchise incorporates at least one historical pirate in its next installment.
