You Won’t Believe Which Comic Book Heroes Star in Ryan Coogler’s New Movie Sinners!

In the upcoming film by Ryan Coogler, titled “Sinners“, many of its stars previously showcased their talents in various comic book films and TV series. The plot revolves around Michael B. Jordan portraying twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who confront an unimaginable evil lurking in their small American town during the 1930s. This supernatural vampire thriller also boasts Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Miles Caton, Jayme Lawson, Wunmi Mosaku, Omar Benson Miller, and Delroy Lindo among its stellar cast. As of now, “Sinners” boasts an almost flawless 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, making it Coogler’s highest-rated production to date. Notably, Coogler has also dipped his toes in the comic book movie world, having directed Marvel Cinematic Universe productions such as “Black Panther” and its sequel “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever“. Jordan and other members of the “Sinners” cast have also been part of prominent superhero franchises and other comic book-based projects.

As a die-hard fan of the silver screen, I’ve noticed that some of the talented actors from the gripping series “Sinners” have made a splash in the comic book movie universe. Their performances, particularly those donning capes or masks, have left quite an impression in the realms of superheroes and graphic novels alike.

Michael B. Jordan

Michael B. Jordan made his debut as a comic book character in the 2015 reboot of Fantastic Four, playing the role of Johnny Storm, also known as the Human Torch – the flame-wielding and heat-resistant team member from the famous Marvel group. Despite the fact that many people didn’t appreciate the 2015 version of Fantastic Four, Jordan’s portrayal of Storm received critical acclaim, with his powerful on-screen presence and emotional nuances captivating viewers. While this wasn’t one of Jordan’s most iconic roles, it was by no means a flop in terms of his acting ability.

Currently, Michael B. Jordan’s most celebrated comic book role is that of Erik Killmonger within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In 2018’s “Black Panther,” he portrayed this complex character, a Wakandan exile and former Navy SEAL who served as the main antagonist. With a mix of fearsome intensity and genuine empathy, Killmonger made for an impressive adversary to Chadwick Boseman’s King T’Challa. Jordan convincingly brought depth to the character in both the movie and two episodes of “Marvel’s What If…?,” Season 1. Although Killmonger met his end in “Black Panther,” Jordan reprised the role in 2022’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” by appearing as a ghostly presence visiting Shuri in the Ancestral Plane. In this brief return, Jordan continued to impress as Killmonger, who remains one of the MCU’s most compelling villains.

Hailee Steinfeld

Hailee Steinfeld’s acting journey includes portraying two captivating superhero characters. In 2018, this versatile artist-singer debuted her comic book project with the voice of Gwen Stacy, also known as Spider-Woman, in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. She reprised this role in 2023’s sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and will continue to portray Stacy in 2027’s follow-up film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

In live-action, Hailee Steinfeld played Kate Bishop in the 2021 Disney+ series “Hawkeye”, sharing screen time with Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton (aka Hawkeye). Additionally, Steinfeld lends her voice for Bishop in “What If…? Season 3”. With a significant role anticipated in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future, Bishop’s appearance in the post-credits scene of “The Marvels” hints at her involvement in forming the Champions, a team known as the Young Avengers in the comics. Steinfeld brings an excellent blend of humor and seriousness to her portrayal of Bishop in the MCU, making her an impressive addition to their superhero roster.

Jayme Lawson

Prior to her role in the film “Sinners”, Jayme Lawson had already made a name for herself in another big-screen blockbuster. In 2022’s “The Batman”, she played Bella Reál, a mayoral candidate who later becomes mayor-elect. Despite having a minor role, Lawson was a standout among the star-studded cast, which included Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Lawson’s Reál was authentic, optimistic, and motivational, serving as a beacon of hope for Gotham City, a city plagued by tragedy. Lawson reprised her role as Reál in the spinoff series “The Penguin” in 2024. It remains to be seen if the actress will continue to portray Gotham’s mayor in the upcoming sequel “The Batman Part II”, but it seems unlikely that she won’t play a part in the story somehow.

Omar Benson Miller

Actor Omar Benson Miller, known for his role in “Sinners”, has yet to play a comic book character in live-action, but he’s gained significant recognition from the world of graphic novel adaptations through his voice work in various Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles projects. In 2018, Miller began voicing Raphael in the TV series “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, where he portrayed the character across 57 episodes throughout the show’s two seasons. He reprised his role as Raphael in the 2022 movie, “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie”. Fans of TMNT appreciate Miller’s depiction of Raphael, as he effectively conveys the character’s charm and wit.

Wunmi Mosaku

Wunmi Mosaku is exceptional for having acted in productions from both Marvel and DC universes. She debuted as Kahina Ziri in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” back in 2016, although her DC Extended Universe appearances were limited due to her character’s demise. Later on, Mosaku joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), playing B-15 aka Verity Willis for seasons 1 and 2 of “Loki.” She then made her MCU film debut as B-15 in 2024’s “Deadpool and Wolverine.” In spite of having a smaller role compared to many other prominent MCU characters, Mosaku gave an outstanding performance as B-15 on “Loki,” effectively conveying the character’s transformation from a Time Variance Authority hunter into a tenacious truth-seeker. Among the notable castings in the MCU following “Avengers: Endgame,” Mosaku is likely to secure roles in future comic book projects and beyond.

Delroy Lindo

Unlike the cast members from the “Sinners” series, Delroy Lindo hasn’t yet appeared in any comic book-related project. However, he’s had opportunities for such roles that didn’t quite materialize. In 2016, Lindo was chosen to play Dominic Fortune in Marvel’s Most Wanted, a spinoff of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series. Unfortunately, the show’s pilot episode never aired, and ABC decided to explore other Marvel projects instead. Another chance came his way, but that too didn’t pan out. Lindo was cast in the upcoming Blade movie, starring Mahershala Ali as the vampire hunter, but he departed from the project in early 2024 due to director changes and production delays. As of now, there’s no definite news about the Blade reboot, as the film is currently on hold. It seems that Lindo has had a string of bad luck with superhero films, but here’s hoping he gets to play a comic book character someday.

Sinners opens in theaters on Friday, April 18th.
