In the realm of iconic anime productions, “Serial Experiments Lain” has garnered a dedicated fanbase ever since its introduction in the late ’90s. This dreamlike series propelled creator Chiaki J. Konaka upward in the anime industry, inspiring other captivating narratives that resonated widely. However, not every concept is destined for an anime adaptation, even if its creator gains significant acclaim.
Fortunately, Konaka has provided a significant update concerning the anime adaptation of one of his works, albeit it may not be a continuation of “Serial Experiments Lain”. Instead, it’s a project that many have eagerly anticipated for more than fifteen years.
Interestingly, a fan reached out to director Chiaki Konaka through email, asking if the popular series Despera would ever get an anime adaptation. Surprisingly, not only did Konaka reply, but he confirmed that a Despera anime was indeed being developed! In a surprising turn of events, he revealed that a production committee has already been established for the project. However, due to the high volume of Japanese anime productions currently underway, it’s challenging to secure studio time. But, the structure is expected to change at the end of 2024, and the Despera anime is scheduled for release in 2027. Although we have a wait ahead, fans are asked to remain patient!
What is Despera?
Despera,” crafted by Konaka, isn’t set in the same universe as his prior works, but is often referred to as the spiritual sequel to “Serial Experiments Lain.” Set in the 1920s, this series revolves around its young character Ain, who inhabits a parallel reality where science has advanced beyond what was possible during that era in our world. First introduced in 2009, the light novel series hasn’t been adapted for screenplay yet, but efforts to do so have been made.
Back in 2009, it became known that Ryutaro Nakamura, the director behind “Serial Experiments Lain”, was set to be part of the project. Unfortunately, he passed away due to pancreatic cancer in 2013, causing the series to be temporarily halted. Occasionally, creator Konaka would provide updates about the “Despera” anime, but there were doubts about its eventual release. However, it seems that despite a possible delay, preparations are underway for the upcoming “Despera” anime.
Want to Watch Lain?
If you’ve missed out on experiencing “Serial Experiments Lain,” I’m thrilled to share that it’s now streaming on Amazon Prime Video! Here’s how they describe this mind-bending series, “In a world where computer screens functioned as gateways to extraordinary realms, before smartphones were even a concept, ‘Serial Experiments: Lain’ captivated anime enthusiasts. This surreal series and its seemingly ordinary protagonist, Lain, reshaped an entire generation’s perspective on the internet. Now, as we ponder the hum of power lines and the workings of central processing units with fresh suspicion, join Lain on her journey.
