As a die-hard fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I’ve got a hunch about where “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2 might be heading, and it’s not what I initially anticipated. The first season of this gritty series has concluded with a bang, delivering on raw street-level action and intricate character development within the MCU narrative. True to Marvel form, the finale left us hanging, not just for Matt Murdock, but for all vigilantes in New York City.
However, there are subtle hints scattered across set photos, character intentions, and plot developments that suggest one of Daredevil’s most haunting comic book storylines could serve as the blueprint for “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2. I can hardly wait to see how this unfolds!
The first season of Daredevil: Born Again concluded with a bold finale. With Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk now the Mayor of New York City, he strengthened his control by enforcing martial law and launching a citywide crackdown on vigilantes. In reaction, Matt Murdock, portrayed by Charlie Cox, made a significant and risky move. Understanding that confronting Kingpin alone wouldn’t suffice, he started constructing a network. He initiated the formation of an underground resistance – a unified force of vigilantes ready to challenge Fisk’s authoritarian rule.
We Already Know Born Again Season 2 Is Drawing Inspiration From One Controversial Story
Set Photos Suggest Season 2 Will Adapt Daredevil’s “Shadowlands”
Photos leaked from the filming of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 have sparked intense discussion online and hint at a probable plot direction. One aspect generating much buzz in these photos is Daredevil’s updated costume, which appears to share a strong resemblance with his black-and-red armor from the “Shadowland” storyline – an arc that was published in 2010. In the comics, “Shadowland” is well known for being particularly intense.
In this storyline, Matt, who endures immense grief and trauma, rises as the leader of the ancient ninja clan known as the Hand, often linked with Elektra. Eventually, he’s possessed by a malevolent entity called the Beast. Under the Beast’s control, Matt takes his fight against crime to unprecedented extremes, constructing a stronghold in Hell’s Kitchen called Shadowland and imposing his own severe brand of justice. Heroes like Spider-Man, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist are compelled to intervene, resulting in a fateful confrontation.
The concept of Daredevil transforming into a full-blown supernatural antagonist was contentious even within the comics, and it seems to contradict the earthy, grim atmosphere of “Born Again”. Yet, while the demonic possession aspect of “Shadowland” might not align with the MCU’s portrayal of Daredevil, the emotional and thematic development leading up to that story could very well be a direction for “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2. In fact, this could be where the second season is heading.
Forget The Demon Possession, Shadowland Had Another Key Idea
“Shadowlands” Saw Daredevil Claim New York City Territory
The unexpected turn is that I believe the “Born Again” series isn’t going for a complete supernatural theme. Rather, it seems to be exploring the events that led to the creation of “Shadowland.” In the comics, before Matt Murdock was possessed, he had taken a significant step that changed his bond with New York City forever. He grew convinced that the legal system was flawed, corruption was rampant, justice was unattainable, and crime flourished. So, in an extraordinary move, he essentially established a part of New York City as off-limits to everyone except himself and his allies.
In his conviction that Hell’s Kitchen was overwhelmed by corruption and violence, Daredevil established a secured perimeter around the neighborhood, effectively transforming it into a stronghold. His intentions were clear: Daredevil’s justice would now be enforced on its streets. He reinforced this control through harsh measures, even isolating the area at times and resorting to violence when necessary for protection. Remarkably, his actions extended as far as taking the life of Bullseye, a decision that even the Punisher found questionable due to Daredevil’s radical methods.
The idea – a lone vigilante taking over a city sector under the banner of justice – is intriguing, yet chilling. It’s crucial to note that it seems like a logical progression from what we’ve seen so far in “Born Again.” With Kingpin declaring war on vigilantes and Daredevil assembling his own troops, the stage has already been set for an epic philosophical conflict.
In a nutshell, one character exerts power and manipulates the city’s affairs from on high, while another challenges him with brute force, alliances, and principles – perhaps even by establishing his own order. Key plot points hint at this, such as Bullseye’s escape and his long-standing vendetta against Daredevil, which is shaping up to reach its peak in season 2. Additionally, Punisher’s reappearance in “Born Again” has previously shown the two discussing their approaches, with the final scene of Matt Murdoch repeatedly urging Punisher to opt for non-violent solutions. Consequently, “Born Again” season 2 is well-positioned to explore central themes from “Shadowland.”
Will Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 See Matt Claim A Section Of New York?
Details Of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Are Scant
In Daredevil: Born Again season 2, it seems only natural that Daredevil would stake his claim in New York City. The first season concludes with Fisk turning the city into a militarized zone, leveraging his role as mayor to deploy personal security forces and suppress any masked opposition. Given that Matt Murdock can no longer fight this battle within the courtroom – not under his current circumstances – it appears he has no choice but to take matters into his own hands.
Given Kingpin’s actions in establishing his unique brand of law and order over the city, Daredevil counteracts in a similar fashion. He establishes a stronghold, not as extravagant as “Shadowland,” but more grounded. This haven serves as a safe zone where Fisk’s authority doesn’t hold sway. It’s a portion of Hell’s Kitchen that welcomes vigilantes to operate freely or find refuge from Fisk’s task force.
In this revised “Shadowland,” the focus isn’t on mystical force; instead, it centers around the struggle for the city, one district at a time. Daredevil transforms from a mere symbol to a leader, and perhaps even a figure of authority in the eyes of the administration. However, to the citizens, he remains their guardian, their final bulwark against the oppressive rule of Kingpin, who resembles a fascist regime.
There’s no requirement for ghosts or the mystical, nor a comeback for The Hand. Instead, the genuine horror lies in witnessing Matt stray beyond lines he had vowed never to cross – all in the name of justice. With the city teetering on the brink of chaos, vigilantes under attack, and Kingpin growing stronger than ever, season 2 could be shaping up for Marvel’s most brutal street-level conflict yet.
The potential outcomes could significantly reshape the stories involving the MCU’s street-level characters, including the Punisher, and might also impact Spider-Man, especially given that “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is set to premiere shortly after the second season of “Daredevil: Born Again”. If my assumptions are correct, it’s not just the series “Daredevil: Born Again” that will be altered, but the entire direction of street-level storytelling within the MCU.
