In issue #2 of “Absolute Flash,” we pick up right where the captivating debut of this series ended, with Wally West struggling to understand his newly acquired abilities as he’s pursued by Captain Cold, Golden Glider, and the Trickster. Unlike the regular Flash comics, “Absolute Flash” deviates from the norm, with DC assuring readers that Wally’s powers aren’t tied to the Speed Force. The first two issues have given us glimpses of his abilities, but this installment provides additional insights into what these powers truly entail. While Wally has shown signs of super speed, it appears his powers encompass more than just speed, potentially implying that some events we’ve witnessed might not be as they seem, such as the supposed demise of a cherished DC character – Barry Allen.
In the first issue titled “Absolute Flash” #1, readers were led to believe that the charred remains belonged to Barry Allen, a consequence allegedly linked to Wally’s newfound abilities. However, in “Absolute Flash” #2, more insight is provided into the moments when Wally obtained his powers, and throughout the issue, we get to witness Wally’s powers manifesting in fresh ways. Although the overall situation remains shrouded in mystery, this issue offers several hints, such as its title – “The Flash of Two Worlds”.
Wally’s Powers Have an Aspect of Time Travel To Them
Let’s delve into the abilities Wally possesses first. He exhibits remarkable speed, which is evident, but it appears he can manipulate time as well. Comics “Absolute Flash” #1 and #2 employ flashbacks to narrate past events, yet it seems like Wally is traveling through his memories, moving backward in time. Moreover, there are bursts of energy emanating from his body that cause destruction nearby. The act that bestowed him with powers transformed him into some form of energy entity. Immediately post-empowerment, we witness Wally transforming into a being composed of red lightning. It takes a while for him to regain his human shape in the flashback, and the final scene from this sequence shows his lightning abilities going out of control again, striking Barry and pushing him back. As the issue progresses, though, we get a clearer understanding of Wally’s temporal powers.
At the culmination of this storyline, Wallaby comes to understand that he perceives two distinct realities. One is a positive universe where he embodies the Flash and enjoys universal admiration. The other is a shadowy realm where he’s merely an energy entity struggling to reunite himself. As previously stated, the comic book “The Flash” #121 was when readers initially learned that DC’s original heroes reside on Earth-Two. It seems that the Flash can glimpse two possible futures, suggesting the possibility of two different pasts as well – one optimistic and another ominous. While it may appear that his powers transcend multiple universes, I believe this is unlikely due to the revelations in “DC All-In.” Instead, it appears more probable that Wallaby’s abilities are linked to time travel. This could potentially mean that Barry Allen, who we thought perished, might still be alive. Given that Wallaby has only recently become aware of these dual timelines, there’s a strong chance that the flashbacks we witnessed could have originated from one of those timelines, implying that Barry may still be at the military base with Wallaby’s father.
Wally’s Powers Open Up a Whole Cornucopia of Story Opportunities
In essence, The Flash’s abilities have traditionally granted him a certain control over time. Now, it appears that the concept of ‘Absolute Flash’ is developing along these lines, with Wally West gaining the unique perspective to perceive multiple future scenarios. This implies that any flashback sequences we’ve witnessed could potentially belong to either of the two timelines that Wally can glimpse. What makes Wally’s powers even more intriguing is their connection to the main DC Universe and one of his arch-nemeses – Hunter Zolomon, famously known as Zoom.
Zoom isn’t classified as a traditional speedster; instead, he manipulates time, making it appear as if he’s running at high speeds, which isn’t the reality. Additionally, his energy is red, much like that of Absolute Flash. Wally’s abilities might solely revolve around time, raising the possibility that Barry Allen is still alive. Moreover, there’s speculation that his powers could be derived from Reverse Flash’s Negative Speed Force, which is more connected to time and produces destructive red lightning. Since Darkseid has incorporated the Negative Speed Force into his Earth, this would align with the theory. This complex scenario could lead to thrilling narratives as Absolute Flash’s time-based powers resemble but differ from the Speed Force energies of the primary Earth.
