The Shedim: Supernatural’s Perfect Revival Villain

In a more natural and easy-to-understand way: The prospect of a Supernatural comeback in season 13 provided an ideal antagonist for the storyline, but in my opinion, it didn’t deliver on its promising start. Regrettably, the likelihood of a Supernatural season 16 remains unclear, as creator Eric Kripke and main actors Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have not disclosed any specific plans during their recent interviews. Despite this, there is still much conjecture about what might happen in Supernatural season 16, who may reappear, and who the Winchester brothers could confront after saving the world numerous times.

Although the final episode of Supernatural saw Ackles’ Dean and Padalecki’s Sam meet their ends, it underscored that death holds no significance for these brothers when it comes to their hunting duties. This is because it’s unlikely that their past adversaries will cease to resurface, given the multitude of Supernatural villains who could potentially make a comeback in a potential revival. Among these antagonists, one from season 13 stands out as an ideal choice for a return, considering their underutilization in the original series: the Shedim.

Supernatural Season 13 Set Up The Shedim As A Major Threat… Then Nothing Happened

The Shedim Were Featured In Season 13, Episode 2

In the thirteenth season of Supernatural, the Shedim were portrayed as a formidable menace to the world, integral to Asmodeus’ (Jeffrey Vincent Parise) schemes. However, they were unfortunately underutilized in the series. These mysterious supernatural entities, feared even by God for their immense danger, were banished to an unreachable corner of Hell forever. Lucifer attempted to free them, but their malevolent character led him to dread them instead. Consequently, he quickly re-imprisoned them, making the Shedim appear as one of Supernatural’s most fearsome monsters for a brief period.

In Supernatural season 13, Asmodeus seized the opportunity to liberate certain beings after he ascended as the new King of Hell following Crowley’s (Mark Shepperd) demise. He exploited Jack (Alexander Calvert), altering his appearance and persuading him that the Shedim were a misplaced battalion of God’s soldiers who had been unjustly confined in Hell. Almost succeeding in his mission, Jack was ultimately thwarted by Sam and Dean just in time, ensuring the Shedim returned to their imprisonment within Hell for the remainder of the series. With the series finale, the Shedim present an intriguing possibility as antagonists for Supernatural season 16.

The Shedim Would Be The Perfect Villains For Supernatural Season 16

The Shedim Could Have Been Freed After God’s Defeat

The Shedim would make an ideal adversary for Supernatural in its sixteenth season, as their release from Hell could provide a setting outside of Earth. To clarify, the Shedim are kept in confinement by God’s decree, but if Jack overthrows God at the end of the series, the ruling that binds them to Hell might be compromised following his loss of power. This could allow the Shedim to break free from Hell and aim for our world, compelling the Winchesters to embark on a quest through the afterlife in order to prevent them.

Incorporating the Shedim into the narrative of Supernatural season 16 could effectively address the inconsistency from season 13 where their power and fearsome reputation were introduced but not fully realized, making the initial setup somewhat ineffective for me. By employing them here, the storyline can be given its proper attention and significance by linking it back to the original series while providing answers to some of the lingering questions left unanswered for viewers.

Of All Supernatural’s Unanswered Questions, The Shedim Plot Is The Most Frustrating

The Shedim Had So Much Potential As A Monster

Although Supernatural may have overlooked some storylines during its initial broadcast, the Shedim plot was particularly underwhelming due to the immense narrative potential it held. Had the Shedim been developed further, I believe the show would have delved into their origins, introducing an unfamiliar monster and presenting the Winchesters with a formidable challenge – something they were lacking at that stage. The absence of significant tension in Season 13 made those Supernatural episodes rather hard to enjoy, so introducing a new creature could have alleviated this issue.

Similarly, if the Shedim had remained imprisoned, their freedom could have provided more compelling character development for Jack, given his role in their liberation. The guilt and mistrust he might have experienced from being deceived could have subtly shaped his character over time, rather than abruptly before the series concluded. If the Shedim reappeared in a potential revival of Supernatural, it would offer an opportunity to further develop this nuanced aspect of Jack’s character as the Winchesters embark on their final mission to save the world once more.
