Warning! Spoilers for Severance season 2 ahead!
After completing my second viewing of Severance season 2, I discovered something incredibly sad about Irving’s last statement this time around. This new episode didn’t spare Irv the struggles as he coped with the consequences of the Macrodata Refinement Overtime Contingency incident from season 1. Already grappling with Burt’s retirement, Irv’s time away painfully exposed the unattainable nature of his lover. To make matters worse, no one paid heed to his concerns about Helly, leading to his termination after attempting to drown her. All in all, it was a very challenging period for Irving B.
In the final scene of “Severance” where we saw Irving’s Innie, he was terminated (tragically). For the remainder of the season, we delved into his Outie’s character. This version of Irv appears less naive and religious, yet there are striking resemblances between Outie Irv and his Innie. One noticeable similarity is that Outie Irv seems equally captivated by Burt as his Innie was on the Severance floor. Burt aided Irving in evading Lumon’s pursuit during “Severance” season 2, and their farewell was heart-wrenching to witness. However, upon rewatching, I found this line from Irving particularly significant.
Irving’s Final Line In Severance Season 2 Is A Callback To A Season 1 Moment
“I’m Ready”
In Season 2 of “Severance”, when Outie Burt and Irving bid farewell, their faces almost touched, indicating the palpable tension between them. It seemed as if Irving was yearning to escape this situation, repeatedly uttering “I’m ready“. Burt ultimately put an end to it by reminding Irving of his marital status and the intricate web of Lumon’s regulations and Burt’s company ties. With a heavy heart, Irv withdrew without a word, boarded a train, and departed with a wistful grin.
During my initial viewing, this particular scene left a strong impression on me. However, upon rewatching it, I observed a striking similarity with the intimate moment between Innie Irv and Burt in season 1. To be more precise, these two sequences share such remarkable similarities that I was taken aback by my previous oversight. In the first season, the duo stealthily departed together, approaching a point where they seemed on the verge of kissing. Yet, Irv B. suddenly became anxious and exclaimed “I’m not ready” before retreating. This moment is tinged with bittersweet sadness, as whether or not Irv was prepared, the eventual outcome remained unchanged. Furthermore, these connections between the scenes highlight an unexpected continuity from Innie to Outie that should be impossible.
Irving & Burt’s Season 2 Moment Could Be A Hint That 1 Severance Theory Is Correct
Burt May Not Be Completely Severed
In season 1 and season 2 of Irving and Burt’s show, Severance, it’s shown that Innies and Outies are essentially the same person in multiple ways. However, there might be more to it than meets the eye. Although Outie Irv claims he doesn’t recall telling Burt he wasn’t ready, his behavior in season 2 suggests character growth that shouldn’t have been possible given their previous interactions. The way Irv says “I’m ready” seems to indicate a shared understanding between them that hadn’t existed before, even though they aren’t consciously aware of it on the surface level. This idea has sparked a popular theory among Severance fans.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the captivating first season of Severance. There were subtle indications that Irv had undergone some form of reintegration. His peculiar work visions, though distinct from Petey’s, shared striking similarities. The audience couldn’t help but notice these parallels. Moreover, Outie Irv’s recurring paintings of the black hallway suggested he harbored memories of the Severed floor. In the climactic moment of Severance season 2, it appeared as if Innie and Outie Irv had managed to bridge the chasm between their consciousnesses. They felt more like one individual. However, this might not have been due to any specific procedure.
Irving’s Final Scene With Burt May Just Be Evidence Of What Lumon Is Trying To Eliminate
It’s Clear That The Severance Procedure Isn’t Perfect Yet
In the second season of Severance, it seems as though Irv and Burt’s relationship blurs the boundary between their ‘Innies’ and ‘Outies’, which could be a reflection of what Lumon is striving so tirelessly to eradicate – the potential overlap or merging of Severed employees’ consciousness. Contrary to what they are told, that the Severance process flawlessly separates their minds without any overlap, it becomes evident throughout the series that this is not the case. For instance, Petey clarified this concept to Mark in season 1 – Mark S. remains oblivious to Mark Scott’s suffering, but he can still sense it on some level. Lumon acknowledges and is working diligently to rectify this issue.
James Eagan, known for his work in the ether field, aspired for a world free from pain. Using the Severance method, which he obtained from Harmony Cobel, he aimed to bring this dream of his ancestor to life. The ambition is to create barriers so robust that they completely eliminate any sensation of pain, with no traces left. Gemma and Cold Harbor served as the ultimate trial, determining if what we saw with Irv and Burt in season 2 could finally be put to rest. Lumon seeks to render its workers insensible, but whether this goal can be achieved remains uncertain.
