10 Underrated Sci-Fi Gems Streaming Now on Hulu: Discover Your Next Binge!

For Hulu subscribers, there’s an abundance of content to choose from, yet finding the gems among the vast selection can sometimes feel like a chore. It’s challenging to distinguish what’s worth watching and what isn’t, especially when you have multiple streaming services under your belt. I completely understand this struggle as I subscribe to no fewer than eight streaming platforms, and even then, I often find myself at a loss for choice when it comes to deciding what to watch. To make your search for high-quality sci-fi content on Hulu less overwhelming, let’s explore some hidden gems in the science fiction genre that might have slipped under the radar.

On Hulu right now, you’ll find a wealth of captivating sci-fi content. Currently, there are three different Jurassic Park movies and the entire Alien series accessible for streaming. If you’re an avid science fiction enthusiast, chances are you’ve already watched many of the franchise films available on the platform. In this post, we’d like to introduce ten lesser-known sci-fi titles on Hulu that might be new to your viewing list.

Kids vs. Aliens

If you’re yearning for a wild, absurdly fun experience that takes you back to the days when imagination knew no bounds, I wholeheartedly recommend “Kids vs. Aliens”. This feature-length extravaganza is based on the “Slumber Party Alien Abduction” segment from “V/H/S/2”, and it’s an absolute blast!

In this movie, a group of spirited youngsters find themselves in a battle against extraterrestrial intruders, who are using human body parts as fuel for their spaceship. It’s a throwback to ’80s classics like “Flight of the Navigator” and “Explorers”, but with a lot more gore and some seriously spicy dialogue. If you’re in for a wild ride with a dash of nostalgia, this one’s for you!

Jason Eisener, known for directing “Slumber Party Alien Abduction,” is also in charge of this spinoff. Together with John Davies, who contributed to the script of the original “Slumber Party Alien Abduction” segment, Eisener penned the screenplay for this new project.

T.I.M.

This story is titled using an acronym – T.I.M., which means “Technologically Integrated Manservant.” The narrative explores the consequences that arise when artificial intelligence starts to interpret its purpose of serving its maker in a slightly overzealous manner.

Initially, the movie wasn’t met with overwhelming praise from critics. But if you’re seeking a suspenseful film that serves as a warning about the risks of artificial intelligence, it might not be easy to find one better than this.

Donnie Darko

Richard Kelly’s apocalyptic story about a young man dealing with mortality was largely overlooked upon its release, mainly because of poor timing. It premiered in cinemas shortly after the 9/11 attacks and contained a plot involving an airplane crash. Consequently, the movie wasn’t heavily promoted and earned approximately $500,000 during its U.S. cinema release. However, over time, it has deservedly gained a substantial fanbase.

Watching Donnie Darko repeatedly remains as captivating as the first time, thanks to its memorable dialogue and concealed elements that keep you intrigued. In this movie, you’ll find a talented ensemble cast including Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze, and Noah Wyle.

Slash/Back

If you’re looking for a gripping sci-fi movie featuring powerful female characters and authentic portrayals of Indigenous people, then I recommend Slash/Back. This film revolves around a group of Inuit teenagers who venture beyond their settlement without adult supervision, leading them into an unexpected encounter with hostile extraterrestrial intruders.

The movie highlights similar struggles experienced by the main characters, young women, and the devastating impacts of colonization on Indigenous tribes. For this 2022 project, Nyla Innuksuk served as director and collaborated with Ryan Cavan on the scriptwriting.

Infinity Pool

Despite facing criticism for being a nepotism case, Brandon Cronenberg clearly showcases his exceptional filmmaking skills and unique artistic perspective. While it’s true that his father, David Cronenberg, may have provided some initial opportunities, Brandon demonstrates an undeniable creative independence. A prime example of this can be seen in the film Infinity Pool.

This chic movie seamlessly blends elements of body horror, rural supernatural horror, and societal critique, set on a remote island sanctuary with no tolerance for disorder. Those who disregard the rules face severe consequences.

Palm Springs

As a movie enthusiast, I always appreciate it when seemingly disparate genres are skillfully blended on the silver screen. A prime example of this is the clever fusion of science fiction and comedy, a combination that’s not as common as horror-comedy but just as entertaining. One film that beautifully demonstrates this unique blend is Palm Springs. In this captivating feature, two strangers cross paths under serendipitous circumstances only to discover themselves trapped in a time loop with no discernible escape route.

2020’s launch may have been overlooked due to COVID limitations and it being exclusively available for streaming, but it managed to secure two Golden Globe nominations nonetheless. That’s not bad at all.

Crimes of the Future

As a connoisseur of ’70s and ’80s horror, I hold a special place in my heart for the work of David Cronenberg. Classics like Videodrome and Scanners are among my all-time favorite genre films. However, for this discussion, let me focus on one of his more contemporary creations: Crimes of the Future. This is a film set in the future that follows a pair of performance artists who have garnered fame through live performances involving the growth of mutated organs. Their unique act catches the attention of an enigmatic group with ideas of their own about this unsettling development in human evolution.

If you’ve missed the director’s unique style that he was once known for, prepare for a comeback that echoes his early, iconic work – a thrilling journey reminiscent of classic Cronenberg.

No One Will Save You

As a devoted cinephile with a penchant for horror, I’m guessing you might recognize Brian Duffield – he’s the mastermind behind the chilling Netflix hit, “The Babysitter.” If that spine-tingling production left you craving more, don’t delay! Make sure to catch his 2023 streaming blockbuster, “No One Will Save You,” which quickly became the most-watched title during its debut week on Hulu.

In this introspective reflection on trauma, a young woman finds herself battling extraterrestrial intruders, all the while trying to let go of her past and keep it firmly in its proper place – behind her.

Vesper

Be prepared, this post-apocalyptic film lasts close to two hours, so make sure you set aside some additional time to enjoy it. Although it might test your patience, I assure you that the experience will be worthwhile. The story revolves around a resilient young woman named Vesper, played by Raffiella Chapman, as she navigates through a grim future. She must use her intelligence and biohacking skills to survive in this harsh environment.

Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper jointly wrote and directed the project, receiving largely favorable feedback from both film critics and audiences. Previously, these two had worked together on a segment within the horror anthology movie titled The ABCs of Death 2.

They Come Knocking

In this TV movie directed by Adam Mason, titled “Into the Dark: Episode Nine,” critics commended its creation of an unsettling mood and portrayal of relatable characters. The storyline revolves around a father and his two daughters who are going on a journey to say goodbye to their recently departed mother during a road trip.

The Into the Dark movie series offers a diverse range; while certain ones stand out as exceptional, others tend to fade from memory. Among the remarkable productions born from the partnership between Hulu and Blumhouse Television, They Come Knocking is undeniably one of the most memorable titles.
