Can you think of another ’90s TV show theme as legendary as “The X-Files”? I doubt there is one. Composer Mark Snow truly revolutionized the norm with the series’ memorable soundtrack. This melody graced all 218 episodes, along with two movies. The introduction ranks among those of shows like “The Addams Family” and “Mission: Impossible” as one of the most potent television openings ever created. What makes the theme music from “The X-Files” so intriguing is that it emerged from a chance occurrence and bears no resemblance to what series creator Chris Carter originally imagined.
During the promotional phase for the 2016 revival/follow-up season of the show, Carter and Snow had a chat with NPR’s All Things Considered. They shared reminiscences about their partnership and discussed the origins of the underlying concept.
Snow told them, ‘Apparently my task is to work on The X-Files,’ he clarified. I simply replied, ‘Alright,’ as if it were any ordinary pilot project.
Scoring a Cultural Phenomenon in the Making
Unbeknownst to Snow, what he was about to create was far from just another series theme; it was destined to become a timeless piece of TV history. His composition would play a crucial role in the enduring popularity of this show.
As I embarked on composing the pilot theme, Carter, the series mastermind, expressed his desire for a tune that would be simple enough for Boy Scouts to sing around the campfire and send shivers down each other’s spines. He further hinted at an introduction reminiscent of the iconic music from The Twilight Zone.
As a film enthusiast, I’d share, “Mark used to pass me materials, but I’d often reply, ‘It’s not quite right,’ when explaining our collaboration.” I then suggested to him, “You know, there’s a song that really resonates with me – it’s all about the guitars. Give it a listen and see if it sparks any ideas for us.
The tune Carter was thinking about was “How Soon is Now” by The Smiths, which eventually played a significant role in the TV show Charmed on The CW, although it was later performed as a cover by the group Love Spit Love.
As a film enthusiast, I must confess that while Carter’s work offers numerous nods and potential sources of inspiration, Snow’s creation was nothing short of serendipitous. One fateful day, in a stroke of accidental brilliance, Snow inadvertently struck his elbow against his keyboard with the echo delay activated. In that instant, something truly enchanting was born.
In a different phrasing, Snow experimented with various tools accompanied by a mysterious noise, but nothing felt quite fitting. Then, he incorporated a synthesized whistling clip. Hearing this, Snow’s companion, Glynn, took notice and grew curious. Glynn then contributed some real-life whistles for Snow to mix in. The opening theme we now cherish is a blend of equal amounts of Glynn’s whistles and the synth sample.
The Show Went From a Cult Classic to a Smash Hit Over Time
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson starred in the Fox series that originally aired from 1993 to 2002. It returned for a 10th season in 2016 and an 11th season in 2018. The show revolved around their characters, who were FBI agents assigned to a special department within the Bureau that investigates strange phenomena and paranormal events. Initially, it was a moderate success, but gained popularity over time. At its height, the program transformed into a cultural phenomenon, with merchandise based on the show widely available in stores.
During the height of X-Files frenzy, the show made a mark on The Simpsons as Anderson and Duchovny lent their voices to animated depictions of their characters. Moreover, various props from this series are now housed in the National Museum of American History. How many TV shows can boast such an unusual connection?
The show’s iconic theme music is hard to imagine it without, and Snow’s opening sequence plays a crucial role in the show’s triumph. It’s astonishing to consider that this theme we’ve grown so attached to originated from a chain of fortunate coincidences. Yet, many remarkable creative projects spring from the most unexpected circumstances.
