Star Wars Actors Clash: Lightsaber vs. Mandalorian Jetpack – Who Wins?

In the vast and captivating galaxy of Star Wars, two extraordinary tools catch the eye for their uniqueness and the powers they possess: the Mando’s jetpack and the lightsaber. Each one is impressive in its own right, but deciding which is superior largely depends on the situation, the user’s abilities, and the type of battle at hand. In the latest iHeartRadio Star Wars Rebels rewatch podcast, Pod of Rebellion, the four hosts — Jon Lee Brody, Tiya Sircar (Sabine Wren), Vanessa Marshall (Hera Syndulla), and Taylor Gray (Ezra Bridger) — discussed this topic, leading to a heated debate among the actors. Given that Taylor Gray is a Jedi character and Tiya Sircar plays a Mandalorian, they passionately defended their choices. However, no clear winner was declared, as what’s considered “cooler” ultimately depends on individual taste. While I favor lightsabers, someone else might argue differently based on their own reasons.

Let’s break down these two iconic weapons and see if one is inherently cooler than the other.

Lightsabers are the Ultimate Symbol of Star Wars

According to Taylor Gray in the podcast episode, “Star Wars relies heavily on the lightsaber.” This iconic weapon of the Jedi and Sith is an energy blade from a kyber crystal enclosed within a handle. It has exceptional slicing ability, capable of cutting through most substances instantly and sealing wounds simultaneously. An expert user can also employ it offensively to deflect blaster shots and block physical attacks, as Taylor Gray noted too.

Gray affirmed, “If you fire a lightsaber at someone, they instantly retaliate by firing it back, but this time attached to a jetpack. The lightsaber appears undamaged in this exchange.

In addition to practical uses, a lightsaber holds deep symbolism and psychological weight, often leaving opponents intimidated. Unlike traditional weapons that run out of ammo, its energy supply is long-lasting. Moreover, the lightsaber’s flexibility in battle, thanks to multiple fighting styles and methods, enables users to respond effectively to various combat scenarios.

In truth, wielding a lightsaber proficiently takes considerable time and rigorous training, often coupled with a bond to the Force. Many combatants cannot just grab a lightsaber and fight skillfully with it. Primarily employed in close quarters, its reach is limited, and there are specific materials such as Beskar that can exploit its weaknesses. Moreover, despite being durable, its power source can eventually run out after extended use.

An Argument for the Mandalorian Jetpack

The Mandalorian’s jetpack, an essential part of their armor and way of life, offers exceptional mobility and maneuverability. This device enables swift movement, strategic positioning, and navigation through challenging terrains. It grants a vertical edge by enabling flight, making it possible to launch attacks from above and increasing the user’s elusiveness; as Tiya Sircar put it, “A person wearing a jetpack can dodge a lightsaber because they’re in the air. They’re gone.

Despite their thrilling appeal, jetpacks have a finite fuel supply, which could leave you in trouble at the wrong time. They’re also susceptible to damage that might make them unusable or even cause an explosion. Navigating with skill and training is crucial, but they lack inherent defense mechanisms; instead, they rely on armor and other weapons for protection. Furthermore, environmental conditions such as strong winds or confined spaces can limit their efficiency.

In essence, neither a Mandalorian jetpack nor a lightsaber can be definitively declared as ‘cooler’, because this is largely a matter of personal opinion. Instead, the weapon that truly shines depends on how well it complements its user’s abilities and exposes the vulnerabilities of their adversary and the surrounding conditions. That said, I personally find lightsabers to be exceptionally appealing.
