Daliso Chaponda

Age: 45

Job: Comedian

Daliso Chaponda, known for his comedy act, gained prominence by finishing third on Britain’s Got Talent competition back in the year 2017.

In his childhood, Chaponda was raised in a household that followed Christianity. However, he is now delving into the teachings of the Baha’i faith and has acknowledged that the physical aspect of the pilgrimage might present challenges for him.

Regarding his participation in this year’s series, Chaponda explained: “I trust in God, and I think there are multiple ways to honor Him. That’s why I’m hoping this Pilgrimage will provide some clarity. I was raised in 14 distinct countries, and my family was spiritual, but I haven’t found the ideal path for me yet.

I find it challenging to categorize my religious identity as I feel I don’t quite fit into any specific faith. Yet, I resonate deeply with Baha’i, Quaker, and Unitarian beliefs. However, I haven’t fully identified myself with any of these yet. Perhaps after my pilgrimage, I’ll have a clearer understanding of who I am in terms of faith.

Harry Clark

Age: 24

Job: TV personality

Instagram: @harryclarky

Harry Clark rose to fame after appearing on season 2 of The Traitors, which he won.

After the television series ended, he started a podcast called “The Harry and Paul Show” with his co-star from the Traitors competition, Paul Gorton.

Harry, being a devoted Catholic, is eager to learn more about the religious beliefs of famous individuals who have embarked on pilgrimages, as well as understanding their reasons for holding these convictions.

In an interview with TopMob magazine, Harry expressed his belief that the series was perfectly timed.

He shared that after leaving the military, he felt lost without a clear path. However, his life took an unexpected turn as he found himself thrust into the limelight following his appearance on The Traitors. He admits to participating for financial reasons, but has managed to save and even invest that money.

Afterward, I found myself contemplating, ‘I fear everyone will dislike me.’ My interactions with celebrities hadn’t been pleasant. However, things took a turn for the better when ‘Pilgrimage’ arrived; it became my lifeline.

Helen Lederer

Age: 70

Job: Comedian

Instagram: @helenlederer

Helen Lederer, known for her humor and acting skills, has been featured alongside Jennifer Saunders in the popular series Absolutely Fabulous. Additionally, she’s collaborated with Saunders and Dawn French on the comedy sketch series French and Saunders.

Lately, I find myself thrilled at the prospect of being part of the revived Fawlty Towers ensemble set to grace London’s West End come later in the year.

She expressed her feelings about participating as: “I have faith in a higher power, although I’m unsure of its specific identity. I was born into a Jewish family, but my Czechoslovakian grandparents, who were culturally Jewish, never discussed their beliefs. On the other hand, my mother hails from the Isle of Wight, and I’ve been informed that I received Christian baptism.

Having a blend of heritages implies holding respect for both cultures, and as I grow older, I find a unique quality emerging – an inescapable connection to my past. With my multicultural background, carrying the burden of familial struggles not entirely mine, I aspire to transform this experience into something that brings me solace.

Jay McGuiness

Age: 34

Job: Singer

Instagram: @birdspotting

Jay McGuiness gained fame as a member of the boy band, The Wanted. Later, he showcased his talents in dance by appearing and winning on Strictly Come Dancing.

After that, he’s been focusing on a theater career, with roles in productions like BIG! The Musical, 2:22 A Ghost Story, and now, & Juliet.

McGuiness shared, “The idea of embarking on this Pilgrimage seemed just right for me,” he expressed. Raised in Nottinghamshire within an Irish-Catholic household, we attended Catholic school and sang hymns, and every Sunday, we’d sit together on the pew. Over time, I’ve come to believe that the guidelines associated with being a Catholic can be overly judgmental for my current state.

Jeff Brazier

Age: 45

Job: TV presenter

Jeff Brazier initially pursued a career in football but later transitioned to television broadcasting. He has hosted shows such as Finders Keepers and I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! NOW!, and made appearances on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins and Celebrity Race Across the World.

As someone who attended a Catholic school, I’ve since embarked on a spiritual journey, incorporating meditation into my daily routine. Nowadays, for me, a pilgrimage represents an extraordinary chance to delve deeper into thoughts and discussions that aren’t commonplace in my everyday life.

Age: 37

Job: Journalist

Nelufar Hedayat is a journalist who has worked across the BBC, Channel 4 and The Guardian.

2023 saw Nelufar receiving an Emmy award in the category of Outstanding Science, Technology, and Environmental Journalism, for her compelling documentary titled “In Real Life: Plastic Time Bomb”.

she identifies herself as a contemporary Muslim, seeking a path within the religion she was raised with.

She expressed her frustration by saying, “It truly bothers me when people view faith as just checking a box. Instead, faith is something that’s felt, something you can be pulled towards and pushed away from.

I aim to infuse this Pilgrimage with an atmosphere of openness. Although I harbor feelings of anger towards God, I yearn for a spiritual connection that transcends my current emotions – be it anger or disillusionment – and that’s what excites me the most about this journey.
