Last night’s Doctor Who episode, titled Lux, found The Doctor and his associate, Belinda, squaring off against an odd adversary. This formidable enemy turned out to be none other than the animate villain, Mr Ring-a-Ding, who was brought to life by the voice of Alan Cumming.
Additionally, upon their arrival in 1950s Miami, the TARDIS duo didn’t just encounter a single danger; they also grappled with racial segregation and prejudiced behavior from the locals.
Or:
Besides the immediate threat, 1950s Miami posed another challenge for the TARDIS pair: they had to navigate through the racial segregation and unfriendly attitudes of those around them.
Or:
The TARDIS duo faced more than one peril during their visit to 1950s Miami; they also encountered racial segregation and hostility from locals.
In the latest episode of Doctor Who: Unleashed, Ncuti Gatwa shared with Steffan Powell that the episode was packed with a great deal of content and incredibly deep.
They arrive mysteriously in Miami during the 1950s at night, and they sense that something sinister is unfolding at the movie theater. Yet, they prefer to stay there rather than confront the malevolence lurking outside in the city of 1950s Miami.
As a fervent admirer, I’d like to share that Showrunner Russell T Davies recently delved into his approach towards addressing racial issues when portraying Gatwa’s Doctor in historical settings. However, he emphasized that people tend to overlook the potential challenges posed by the more remote past, focusing instead on the issue at hand.
He mentioned that many people may envision times like the 1800s, 1900s, or even the 1700s, but what we’re dealing with here is more akin to the 1950s in Miami.
He stated: “I prefer not to let this new Doctor overshadow the original one, as traditionally the Doctor commands any space they are in, whether through intrigue, personality, charm, or presentation, or true influence and dominance. It would be quite unfortunate if we altered that for Ncuti’s portrayal of the Doctor.
“So it’s there. [But] I never want it to be dominant.”
It seems crucial that we tackle those problems. It’s beneficial, I believe, to confront them, given the circumstances under which we currently find ourselves globally.
