This hypothesis, proposed by Reddit user u/khdutton, suggests that instead of seeking Luke Skywalker, Vader was actually following the Millennium Falcon due to his Force sensitivity towards a potent user who was aboard. Unbeknownst to him, it was Leia whose Force powers were just surfacing, which eventually resulted in her heroic rescue of Luke. This theory not only sets the stage for Leia’s future training in the Force but also offers an explanation for Vader’s apparent oversight.

In the movie “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back,” set three years after the events of “A New Hope,” Darth Vader is spearheading a widespread search for the Rebel Alliance, specifically targeting the pilot who miraculously destroyed the Death Star with the Force. Unbeknownst to him, this pilot is his son, Luke Skywalker. At a crucial moment in the film, Vader was poised to eliminate Luke; however, the Millennium Falcon managed to save him just in time. The expanded stories reveal that Vader had previously recognized Luke’s abilities as a Force-user.

The Imperial forces intensely assault the Rebel outpost on Hoth, causing the Rebels to disperse. Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca escape on the Millennium Falcon, while Luke heads for Dagobah in his X-wing in pursuit of Yoda. Darth Vader appears oblivious to Luke’s whereabouts, but he tirelessly pursues the Falcon. This could be due to lingering resentment over the Falcon’s skillful strike during the Battle of Yavin 4, but it’s also evident that he seeks this young Jedi user, particularly after the Emperor discloses that he is Anakin Skywalker’s son.

In this scenario, Vader captures Leia with the expectation that Luke will attempt a rescue. It’s curious because, despite his powerful connection to the Force, he seems unaware of their familial bond. This might seem peculiar, given the Force’s ability to reveal other insights to him. His decision-making at this stage in the narrative is influenced by the Dark Side, but there could be additional factors at play as well.

Leia Scrambles Vader’s Senses

In simpler terms, Darth Vader mistakenly believed that Padme and their unborn child had both perished, unaware that she had given birth to twins who survived.
