It’s evident that Harry Potter enthusiasts are quite discerning in their approval. With a complete series, a theme park, and sequel films expanding on J.K. Rowling’s original story, one would think they’d be content. However, there’s still dissatisfaction brewing among them, as some casting choices for the upcoming Max series have sparked controversy. Specifically, there seems to be a disagreement regarding the actor chosen to play an elderly wizard who presides over Hogwarts school, a character familiar to us all within the franchise.
John Lithgow has openly shared his feelings about securing the part of Albus Dumbledore in the forthcoming Max series, confessing that he felt “quite daunted” by the role.
During his interview on BBC’s The One Show, Lithgow humorously commented, “I’ll be stepping into the shoes of Michael Gambon. Though I’m not British, I’ve portrayed one on screen. Just to clarify, I played Winston Churchill in The Crown and did a commendable job.
John Lithgow pledged assurance to fans worried about him replacing actors like Richard Harris, Michael Gambon, and Jude Law in his next words, as he became more serious in his tone.
Indeed, it’s a great excitement for me. However, I understand some may have found it surprising that an American was chosen to portray the quintessential English wizard. Nonetheless, I promise to give my all,” Lithgow stated.
This summer, the Harry Potter series on Max will begin filming, intending to bring one book to life per season while fresh actors take over the legendary roles. Joining Lithgow’s Dumbledore are stars like Nick Frost as Hagrid and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. The ensemble also includes Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thalon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. As of now, HBO has not revealed the main trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
One often-discussed concern among some viewers regarding John Lithgow is his advanced age. Currently at 79 years old, he will be 80 by the time the show begins airing, which is older than Richard Harris was when he initially played the role. This age difference has been highlighted by many to back up their criticisms.
Originally posted, ‘He’s an exceptional performer, but there’s a concern about his age, as we might find ourselves in a similar scenario to Richard Harris’s, given he will be nearly 90 when they complete this TV series.’
This summer, Max’s adaptation of the Harry Potter series is set to start filming, with a possible release date a year later. Not everyone is thrilled about this Harry Potter revival, particularly when it’s in streaming series format. It will be intriguing to see how this new take on the story unfolds.
