For the past several weeks, Nintendo has disclosed a plethora of fresh details about the upcoming game, Mario Kart World. Among the information shared, they’ve unveiled numerous racers who will be playable. One aspect that fans have picked up on is the conspicuous absence of guest characters from previous games. Unlike Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which allowed players to select characters from non-Mario franchises such as Link (from The Legend of Zelda), the Inklings (from Splatoon), as well as Isabelle and Villager (from Animal Crossing), no confirmation has been made about these characters returning for this game. However, it’s worth noting that one past guest character will make a return in an unusual manner.

View Urgent ForecastBefore any of those characters made their debut in the Mario Kart series, a surprising guest from the NES era was introduced in Mario Kart DS. This guest was none other than R.O.B., who initially began as an accessory for the system and stands for Robotic Operating Buddy. After spending decades out of the limelight, Mario Kart DS signaled R.O.B.’s grand comeback. The character then went on to appear in the Super Smash Bros. series. In the Mario Kart games, R.O.B. made his only appearance so far in Mario Kart DS, but this is set to change soon.
In the game Mario Kart World, Nintendo has introduced a new addition that many fans of Mario Kart will appreciate: a bike modeled after R.O.B., one of their beloved characters. However, instead of R.O.B. himself, another player can choose this bike as their ride. The design of the R.O.B.-inspired bike is quite stylish, with its extended arms now supporting the front wheel. This may not be the full return of R.O.B. that fans were eagerly anticipating, but it’s a creative way for Nintendo to honor their past creations.
It’s important to point out that even though R.O.B. is depicted as a bike in Mario Kart World, this doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t be a playable character. In fact, Nintendo has announced Dolphin as a playable character, and there will also be a bike designed after his appearance. This raises the possibility that we might see R.O.B. riding a robot-themed bike, similar to the humorous image of Dolphin on a dolphin-themed bike.
In just under a month, on June 5th when Nintendo Switch 2 hits stores, we’ll finally learn about the potential guest characters in Mario Kart World. While it’s speculated that Nintendo might prioritize the Mario family for this installment, reducing focus on characters from other franchises, nothing is confirmed yet. The game promises an impressive lineup of new racers and alternate costumes, but we’ll have to keep our fingers crossed for a return of fan-favorites like R.O.B. and Link.
