Over the past two decades, an uninterrupted flow of new comic book movies has graced our theaters. In contrast to earlier times when only popular characters like Spider-Man and Batman were featured, with occasional films featuring lesser-known heroes such as Daredevil, today, it seems that every superhero and comic is being considered for adaptation. For instance, Marvel’s First Family will be showcased in “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” while Metamorpho appears to be making his way into the upcoming “Superman” film. Between Marvel and DC Comics, there are numerous potential characters ripe for cinematic adaptation. However, for every superhero who deserves a place on the silver screen, there are a few who arguably shouldn’t or simply can’t be extracted from their comic book origins.
We’ll examine five potential superheroes who sadly won’t grace our screens at the cinema. The circumstances preventing their film adaptations range from practical challenges, legal issues, and simply unrealistic pitches that shouldn’t have advanced beyond the initial idea stage.
5) Matter-Eater Lad
Among all the heroes presented, Matter-Eater Lad stands out as the one I believe has the highest chance of being brought to life, but listing him at the top suggests a rather unimpressive lineup. Known for his eccentricity within DC Comics universe, Matter-Eater Lad’s unique ability lies in consuming anything, and if he eats enough, he can accelerate his metabolism temporarily, granting him quasi-super speed. However, the amount of food required depends on what it is he’s eating. Given that Matter-Eater Lad is a longstanding member of the Legion of Superheroes, I don’t foresee him making an appearance in live action adaptations, as portraying a human consuming a jet as a superpower might not hold viewers’ attention for long without incorporating some creative twists. It could work well as a comedic element, but I suspect it would lose its charm quickly without proper development.
4) Captain Marvel
This Captain Marvel isn’t the Carol Danvers or DC’s Shazam-yelling character you might be thinking of. Instead, he’s an entirely different character who was created by M.F. Enterprises in 1966. He was an alien android with unique abilities that allowed him to separate himself by shouting “Split!” and then rejoin by shouting “Xam!”. He had a sidekick named Billy Baxton, though his name was later changed to Captain Marvel, Jr.
Now, it’s no secret that this character bears a striking resemblance to another popular hero. Unfortunately for M.F. Enterprises, they lost a legal battle over the name “Captain Marvel,” and the original character no longer goes by that name today.
In short, while this Captain Marvel isn’t inherently bad, it’s understandable why major companies might shy away from him due to the potential legal issues. And let’s be honest, the names “Split” and “Xam” could use a little more creativity!
3) Snowflake and Safespace
These two potential superheroes, Snowflake and Safespace, are unique due to their origin story – they were conceived as part of Marvel’s 2020 relaunch of the New Warriors book, a series known for introducing relatable heroes for younger readers. Unfortunately, this pair never progressed beyond the concept art stage, which has led to quite a stir. The words ‘Snowflake’ and ‘Safespace’, in today’s world, carry heavy connotations, often used derogatorily by those with bigoted views.
The intention was that these characters would reclaim these terms for something positive. However, they unfortunately embody the very stereotypes they were intended to mock, making them problematic. If they were meant as social commentary, it was so overt that those being mocked could only snicker, and those who might identify with these characters felt insulted by their one-dimensional, stereotypical portrayals. Given that they haven’t even made it to the pages of a comic book, it seems unlikely that Marvel would invest movie money in them.
2) Big Bertha
Outside of her modeling work, Ashley Crawford assumes the role of superhero Big Bertha, who possesses an unusual mutant power: she can rapidly increase her size, becoming significantly taller and stronger. However, this expansion leads to an overweight appearance which is problematic. To reduce her size, she must forcibly expel the excess weight – essentially vomiting it out. This superpower, though unique, could be seen as distasteful due to its association with obesity and potential fat jokes. Moreover, the process required for Big Bertha’s transformation mirrors the behaviors linked with bulimia – a serious eating disorder. Furthermore, her use of powers to maintain an underweight physique for her career raises concerns about promoting harmful stereotypes.
1) Gin Genie
The character with the least adaptable powers on our list is Gin Genie. Similar to other mutants, she has the ability to create seismic waves, but here’s the twist – the level of alcohol in her bloodstream determines the intensity of these waves. In simpler terms, the more drunk Gin Genie gets, the stronger she becomes. It’s not hard to see why a superhero whose powers are linked to alcoholism is problematic. Marvel apparently shared this view, as she was killed off in the first issue of X-Force where she appeared and hasn’t been seen since. Encouraging persistent, excessive drinking is the last thing a superhero should do, making the idea of her appearing in a live-action movie highly undesirable for her character.
