One unexpected piece of information that emerged after Bungie unveiled Marathon is that it’s not a free-to-play game. Although it’s not a high-priced game either, the developers have yet to disclose further details, which they plan to do later this summer. However, according to sources who spoke with Paul Tassi of Forbes, it might cost around $40.
The cost matches other games like Helldivers 2 and Concord, which isn’t unexpected. Tassi also mentioned that Marathon won’t transition into a free-to-play model at the moment. But for those eager to preview it before release, there may be an opportunity in August, with rumors of an open beta test.
Following the beta testing, it seems players may have an opportunity to pre-purchase the game as well as different versions of it. Could we possibly learn about the pricing when the open beta is announced? Only time will tell.
Marathon begins on September 23rd, and its closed alpha will start on April 23rd. Bungie has apparently lifted the non-disclosure agreement on the former to presumably “change the storyline” and foster a more open conversation with its community. Take a look at the opening cinematic here, and keep an eye out for future announcements.
