[Caution: The following discusses the death of a character from Daredevil: Born Again season 1.] Foggy Nelson’s (Elden Henson) demise was swift and shocking. In the very first episode of Daredevil: Born Again, Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) took Foggy’s life in a violent outburst at Josie’s Bar, Hell’s Kitchen. Daredevil (Charlie Cox), seeking justice for his friend, viciously attacked and almost killed Bullseye. As a result, Bullseye was found guilty of 11 counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without the chance of parole.
Viewers didn’t discover the reason behind Vanessa Fisk’s (Ayelet Zurer) actions until the season finale: She had hired the assassin to prevent Foggy from revealing information about her and Mayor Wilson Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) scheme to turn New York’s Red Hook Port into their personal city-state, as it could potentially expose their plans before Foggy’s client’s case came to light.
Additionally, viewers expected to discover that Foggy’s demise was not genuine. In the comics, Foggy seemed to be fatally stabbed during a visit to a client in Daredevil #82 from 2006. This particular issue served as inspiration for his death scene in Born Again.
However, as it transpired in Daredevil #92, ailing Vanessa Fisk orchestrated events, such as staging Foggy’s demise, and had him secretly revived and spirited away for witness protection by the FBI.
In the final episode of “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 1, directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead – the same team behind the explosive start of “Heaven’s Half Hour” (Season 1 opener) with Foggy’s demise – a surprising twist wasn’t presented.
As I pondered over the somber discussion about Foggy‘s demise, a palpable silence fell among us, punctuated by prolonged eye contact. It was then that the gravity of our role in capturing the death of one of our cherished characters from one of our beloved series, Daredevil, truly struck us. We, the creators, felt like intruders in a sense. We found ourselves staring at Elden, who graced our set for just a few days, and began to question, “Do we really have the right to be here?” I shared these thoughts with The Hollywood Reporter.
Moorhead added, “He granted us his approval under the condition that we handled it with utmost gravity, not just as a shock factor. If this element echoed throughout the series and was the driving force behind Matt’s actions for the remainder of the show, then we would be allowed to include it.
Benson remarked, “There’s a sense of duty towards the previous Netflix series, which is truly exceptional. You need to make it count for yourself, for the viewers, for everything, because that show is outstanding. To illustrate this, imagine being given the opportunity to direct an episode of Breaking Bad! Our reaction would be something like, ‘Sign us up! What’s next?’ Only to be told, ‘You have to kill Jesse in the first five minutes.’ And then we’d wonder, ‘Will everyone hate us?’ To which they replied, ‘Perhaps! But you’ll also get to collaborate with Vincent D’Onofrio, Charlie Cox and Jon Bernthal. So, good luck with that.’
I’ve been asked about a popular fan theory that the 468 address of the Nelson, Murdock & Page law firm might be a nod to Daredevil #88 – the legacy issue number 468 which unveiled “The Secret Life of Foggy Nelson” in FBI witness protection. Well, I’ve heard this theory too, you sharp-eyed detectives! Yet, Marvel would probably give me a stern warning if I shared any more details on that subject.
He went on to say, “One great aspect of Daredevil being a street-level superhero is that the supernatural typically doesn’t interfere much in this universe, even though it falls under the MCU. This results in more intense consequences because punches are felt harder, blood carries more weight, injuries hold greater significance, and death often means permanent end.
It could be that we’re getting a sneak peek at the second season of “Daredevil: Born Again”, which is now being filmed and is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in March 2026.
