Over the upcoming Easter weekend, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be joining another group of fellow movie enthusiasts for an extraordinary adventure! We’re setting off on a personal and spiritual pilgrimage, traversing the breathtaking landscapes of The Road Through the Alps, as part of Pilgrimage on BBC Two. Can’t wait to experience the journey together!
One celebrity participating is singer Jay McGuiness, an individual who identifies as agnostic. After the passing of his bandmate Tom Parker, he had a deep conversation with comedian Helen Lederer, sharing insights about his spiritual voyage.
In March 2022, Tom Parker succumbed to a brain tumor, a few short months following his reunion with his bandmates on tour.
In a recent interview, I admitted that during Tom’s illness, there were times when I found myself in quiet contemplation, moments where one might say I sought solace or guidance. Whether you label it as prayer or not, it was a profound experience for me. And then, upon his passing, I found myself questioning – could he somehow hear my thoughts from the other side?
Now, it seems like that has brought back many questions that I had tucked away in the recesses of my mind.
McGuiness mentioned that he’s seeking a form of “release” or “purging of emotions” as he embarks on his pilgrimage.
He expressed a desire to observe the wind from directions he hasn’t before, seeking insights that might elude him. He also mentioned that if no one seems to have the answers, they could all be in the same boat of uncertainty. Reflecting on this thought for some time, he made this observation.
During the question-and-answer session after watching The Road Through the Alps, McGuiness shared with everyone present, “At one point, I became emotional while conversing with Helen as we discussed the loss of Tom Parker.
However, McGuiness had already braced himself for such a situation, admitting that he had “quite a bit of anxious apprehension.” Fortunately, he found comfort knowing he was under the capable care of Lederer.
He shared that he wept more intensely than any other time on live TV. It’s a daunting thought, yet I felt secure knowing she was there to take care of me.

McGuiness delved deeper into his heartfelt encounter with Helen, sharing that as a child, he held faith in an afterlife, which is not a conviction he holds strongly as an adult.
He mentioned that it was surprising, coming from a particularly amusing Jewish woman, who stated, “You know, I don’t adhere to much of what is attributed to me, but I do have faith in God.
1. “She’s incredibly intelligent, experienced, and maintains her faith, which I find significant for a particular reason.”
2. “Not only is she exceptionally smart, but she also has a wealth of life experience under her belt, and she remains faithful – these traits mean something important to me.”
3. “She’s sharp as a whip, streetwise, and deeply religious; these qualities resonate with me in some way.”
