10 The Vampire Diaries Theories That Make No Sense

Remains a cultural phenomenon, almost a decade following its final television broadcast, as it consistently defies expectations. Fans continue to analyze and debate the stories of Damon, Stefan, and Elena, coming up with fresh theories about the series that persist today. While some of these theories align logically with the narrative of The Vampire Diaries, others are so outlandish they struggle to fit within its established framework.

These theories offer intriguing perspectives for contemplation, but ultimately fail to align with the series’ established storyline and background when closely examined. They delve into questions about Elena’s moral compass, Klaus’ artistic past, and Bonnie’s fate in Mystic Falls, making for compelling reading. Regardless of how appealing these theories may seem, they simply don’t mesh well with the overall narrative.

All The Doppelgängers Were Destined to Be With Each Other

But None of Them Ended Up Together on the Show

Following this event, fans quickly speculated that all doppelgangers from the Petrova and Salvatore lines were destined to be together, a notion strengthened by Stefan and Elena’s shared dreams in an alternate world. However, this assumption was significantly off the mark. It appears that fans may have overlooked the revelation that Markos had cast a prophecy spell specifically to bring the doppelgangers together, allowing him to effortlessly harness their blood for freeing the Travelers.

Despite the persisting belief among theorists that Elena’s soulmate was Tom Avery and Stefan’s was Katherine Pierce, Markos’ disclosure revealed that this theory was merely a temporary construct of the Travelers, not grounded in reality. Furthermore, none of the doppelgängers found their way to each other, decisively debunking this notion.

Klaus Was Actually Vincent Van Gogh

He Was an Artist, But Attributing Van Gogh’s Work to Him Made No Sense

This unconventional idea is based on Klaus’ resemblance to Vincent Van Gogh and his love for art. Detailed observers noticed a sunflower painting in Klaus’ residence, leading them to speculate that he might be none other than the renowned painter who lived in France, famously creating masterpieces like the Sunflowers series. The theory proposes that when Mikael discovered Klaus, he orchestrated the death of his doppelganger and self-amputated his ear.

Considering this intriguingly, however, Klaus happened to be in New Orleans during that timeframe. Moreover, he wouldn’t have missed the opportunity to boast about being Van Gogh if there was truth to it, as he conversed with Caroline about his artwork residing at the Hermitage. Regrettably, it simply didn’t align with reality that he was the renowned French artist.

Damon Had Killed Miranda and Grayson Gilbert

This Was Proven Wrong In the Show

In my opinion, as a movie reviewer, the Augustine family saga took an intriguing twist when the protagonist, Damon, seemed intent on avenging past wrongs by annihilating the families associated with the Augustines and their doctors. The chilling act of killing Grayson and Miranda was perceived as a revenge tactic against the doctor who had once subjected him to experiments. However, it turned out that this assumption was incorrect in Season 6 of the series. Instead, Damon’s actions were motivated by a more complex web of emotions and circumstances, making for an even more captivating narrative.

Liz thought he might be responsible because he was in town on that particular day. However, Damon explained to her that it was his mother’s death anniversary and he needed to be there, which is why he was in Mystic Falls. Stefan rescued Elena that evening, but the incident was truly an accident, not something orchestrated by Damon. He had no involvement in the Gilbert family’s demise.

Damon Knew That Lily Was Alive

A Flashback Led Fans to Believe This

In Season 6, a flashback scene depicted a 17-year-old Damon assisting Stefan with tying a tie while they were preparing for their mother’s funeral. It was Damon who was expected to deliver the eulogy, and Stefan urged him not to miss it. What followed was an unexpected revelation. Young Stefan confessed to his brother that he had seen their mother’s angel the night before. This news caused a look of sorrow and astonishment on Damon’s face as he looked at himself in the mirror after his brother left.

Spectators believed that Damon mistakenly thought he’d spotted Lily in a mirror and consequently became convinced that his mother was still living and healthy. This belief explains why he failed to attend the funeral and the eulogy altogether. However, this theory seems implausible given how authentic Damon’s shock at encountering his mother in the Prison World appeared. His resentment towards Lily for abandoning them was palpable even as she perished from a stake through the heart. It’s highly unlikely that he could have harbored all that bitterness had he known earlier that Lily was alive.

Elena Fell In Love With Damon In Season 1

She Was Still Very Much In Love With Stefan In Season 4, Also

In The Vampire Diaries, the love triangle between Stefan, Damon, and Elena continues to be a captivating aspect. However, some fans believe that Elena began to develop feelings for Damon as early as Season 1. While this idea might excite Delena supporters, it seems contradictory given that throughout most of Seasons 1 and 2, Damon was portrayed as a malicious, insensitive, and vile character who frequently caused harm to Elena and her loved ones.

Elena deeply disliked him, and it was offensive to her personality for people to assume that she developed feelings for him just because he took her to Miss Mystic Falls. Elena was a strong-willed young woman who adhered to her principles and values, and she had avoided being friendly with Damon due to his character for quite some time. However, the show made it evident in Season 3’s first episode, titled “The Birthday,” that she eventually fell in love with him. This romantic development was somewhat of a change from earlier storylines, or a retcon as fans referred to it.

Elena Knew That She Had Vampire Blood In Her When She Told Stefan to Save Her

She Was Not This Manipulative

At the culmination of Season 3, Elena’s transformation into a vampire came as a shock to her character. Fans speculate, though, that she asked Stefan to save Matt because she was already aware of the situation. They suggest that Elena understood Meredith had given her vampire blood to heal, which is why she prioritized Matt’s rescue over her own. However, Elena’s visible dismay and surprise upon her transformation contradicts this theory.

She held her human nature so dear that she wouldn’t dare take such a risk, and Elena’s personality would have chosen death instead of this destiny. Becoming a vampire was never an option for her as there was no way back then, making it a lifelong decision. She had sacrificed her life for others on numerous occasions, which made it disheartening to portray her noble actions in a negative light.

Damon Compelled Elena the First Time He Met Her to Find a Passionate Love

She Would Have Never Chosen Stefan If the Compulsion Ran That Deep

In the final episode of Season 3, there was a flashback scene showing Damon locating Elena by the roadside just before her car accident with her parents. During their conversation, Elena expressed her longing for passion and thrill in her romantic relationships. Before she lost memory of him, Damon used his powers to make her forget him, also mentioning that he hoped she would discover what she was searching for.

Some fans of TVD argue that Damon secretly influenced Elena’s romantic choices, leading her from Matt, then Stefan, and finally to him. This influence, they suggest, was a result of Damon’s compulsion power. However, it’s important to note that his control over others only extended so far as he had to repeatedly re-compel girls like Caroline and Andie to follow his orders. If this were true, Elena would have chosen Damon without hesitation from the start.

Katherine and Elena Switched Places In the Finale

Katherine Would Not End Up at Peace If This Happened

In some fan interpretations, a shadowy theory emerges that in the series finale, Katherine and Elena may have exchanged places through compulsion. Essentially, Katherine would have persuaded Elena to behave like her, while she herself took on Elena’s identity. This role-swapping was something Katherine had done before, and to ensure her own survival, she tricked everyone into believing that it was Elena who perished in the Hellfire alongside Stefan. Instead, Katherine continued living, eventually finding happiness with Damon.

1. It’s quite unsettling to consider this scenario, but it just doesn’t seem plausible. Katherine didn’t appear to have a reason to be in love with Damon or live a life with him, as Stefan was the one she truly loved.

2. The series portrayed these characters achieving peace after death, and Elena even reunited with her family there. However, if Elena were actually Katherine, she would have undoubtedly gone to Hell for all of her misdeeds, given her extensive list of sins.

The Mystic Falls Gang Were All In Hell

The Characters Were Seen Finding Peace In the End

An unusual hypothesis posits that all the characters in Mystic Falls, including Elena, the Salvatores, Bonnie, Caroline, Jeremy, Matt, and others, have already passed away and are suffering in Purgatory or Hell as a consequence of their intense emotions and experiences. This explains why they repeatedly die and return to life, and why they endure so much torment in general.

It’s intriguing to ponder, but the theory quickly loses credibility because the characters experienced tranquility in what appeared to be an afterlife upon completing their lives. If it were indeed Hell, we wouldn’t have witnessed any subsequent afterlife scenes where they reunited with loved ones. Mystic Falls may have been a battlefield, but there’s no evidence suggesting it was Hell.

Bonnie Married Matt In the Future

This Theory Didn’t Quite Add Up On Various Levels

In the finale of “The Vampire Diaries”, Bonnie set off on a journey instead of staying behind, with Enzo keeping an eye on her from his realm. Unlike Caroline and Elena, Bonnie was itching to escape Mystic Falls and explore the wider world. With Enzo’s spirit accompanying her, romance might have been tricky, but many fans hope that she found a delightful companion (who was still alive) somewhere out there in the world.

It wouldn’t make much sense for the character to return to Mystic Falls and marry Matt, as there was absolutely no spark between them. Their shared humanity doesn’t necessarily mean they were destined to be together. In fact, Bonnie and Matt’s marriage seemed implausible given that they never had any romantic scenes or moments in the series at all.
