Among my preferred episodes of “Star Trek: Enterprise,” there’s one that seems to contradict the events in “Star Trek: First Contact”; however, I don’t believe it matters much. In “Star Trek: First Contact,” we witnessed a crucial event in Star Trek history – the first interaction between humans and Vulcans on April 5, 2063. Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-E journeyed through time to prevent the Borg from altering this encounter, thereby preserving the First Contact.
In Star Trek: Enterprise season 2, episode 2, titled “Carbon Creek,” the narrative shifted from Captain Jonathan Archer and the crew of NX-01 Enterprise exploring the galaxy. Instead, during a meal, Subcommander T’Pol shared an intriguing tale with Archer and Commander Trip Tucker about her great-grandmother, T’Mir, who was part of the initial, previously unacknowledged First Contact between Vulcans and humans, which took place in 1957 at Carbon Creek, Pennsylvania.
The historical records of Earth don’t show evidence of this happening, but it is acknowledged by the Vulcans. This implies that the dramatic final scene in “Star Trek: First Contact” may not be as historically significant as initially assumed.
Enterprise’s “Carbon Creek” Broke Star Trek: First Contact’s Canon, But Who Cares?
Technically, Humans Never Knew Vulcans Were On Earth In 1957
In the Star Trek universe, April 5, 2063 is celebrated as First Contact Day, marking Dr. Zephram Cochrane’s historic warp flight. This event brought the Vulcans to Earth for the first time, landing in Bozeman, Montana to meet Cochrane. It’s interesting to note that according to Star Trek: Enterprise’s “Carbon Creek,” Vulcans had actually crash-landed in Pennsylvania 106 years prior to First Contact Day. This means they lived secretly among humans for several months before the significant event of 2063. One of these Vulcans, Mestral (played by J. Paul Boehmer), decided to stay behind on Earth after his fellow Vulcans were rescued, choosing instead to continue exploring our planet.
Even though the Vulcans managed to keep their existence hidden as far back as 1957, their involvement in human history had gone unacknowledged. The officially recognized First Contact with the Vulcans took place on April 5, 2063. Remarkably, the Vulcans were aware that they had visited Earth a full century prior but chose not to reveal this information to their human acquaintances, possibly because the date they considered as the First Contact Day held such significance for United Earth. Contrary to what “Carbon Creek” might suggest, “Star Trek: First Contact” may seem to lessen the importance of T’Pol’s story, but it is indeed true – she left Archer and Trip in a state of uncertainty about her tale’s veracity, but it stands as fact.
“Carbon Creek” Is A Great Star Trek: Enterprise Episode
Enterprise Was Wise To Give Jolene Blalock Center Stage
Enterprise was a clever reinterpretation of events depicted in Star Trek: First Contact, which came out six years earlier and was a big hit at the box office. This potential retcon wouldn’t have been good if it had been a weak episode, but fortunately, “Carbon Creek” turned out to be an outstanding installment of Star Trek: Enterprise. Known for its exceptional time travel stories featuring alien characters, “Carbon Creek” offered a fascinating look at hidden Star Trek history that echoed the 1999 film The Iron Giant and other 1950s-era alien invasion narratives.
Jolene Blalock had already made a strong impression as T’Pol, and she took up the task of playing a new character, T’Mir, in “Carbon Creek,” with most of her “Star Trek: Enterprise” co-stars absent. In this role, Blalock brought another captivating Vulcan to life, adding depth to the character of T’Pol. The change of setting for “Carbon Creek,” set in the past, offered a refreshing contrast to the usual studio settings of “Enterprise.” Notably, the storyline revealed that Vulcans had lived on Earth as far back as 1957, suggesting that humankind wasn’t yet ready for First Contact until it occurred a century later.
