Goku’s Shocking Losing Streak: 10 Fights the Super Saiyan Couldn’t Win

A common misunderstanding about is that Goku is an invincible hero who vanquishes all his foes, whereas his companions and allies are largely insignificant. In reality, Goku possesses a poor win-loss ratio. Although he excels against minions and in the preliminary stages of competitions, he struggles to save the day independently.

In the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z series, Goku experiences a significant number of defeats, particularly against formidable adversaries. To begin with, in his very first fight, another martial artist defeats him. The World Martial Arts Tournament is a challenge he only manages to win after three attempts. During his confrontations with King Piccolo and the Red Ribbon Army, Goku faces multiple near-death experiences. In Dragon Ball Z, Goku fails to defeat any of the main antagonists single-handedly; in fact, he loses against half of the series’ powerful villains.

Goku’s Hunger Prevents Him From Fighting at Full Strength

In the initial storyline of Dragon Ball, only Yamcha fought Goku using conventional combat techniques. Although they had a rematch where Yamcha was defeated, in their first encounter, Yamcha emerged victorious during Round 1. Interestingly enough, when Goku was starving and not at his best, Yamcha managed to defeat him – a fact that some might find troubling due to its depiction of a grown-up character hurting a child without any remorse.

In the same vein as other episodes of the Pilaf Saga, Goku initially clashes with Yamcha primarily for comic relief rather than a serious fight. It’s not that Goku intentionally lets Yamcha win, but rather it’s amusing to watch Yamcha get beaten up when Goku becomes full. However, it can’t be denied that in the Dragon Ball series, Yamcha is known for his losses, yet he technically did manage to defeat Goku in this instance.

Goku’s Master Fights With Everything He Has to Prevent His Student From Becoming Complacent

In the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku effortlessly progresses past the initial rounds and overpowers both Giran and Nam. However, he encounters an opponent who proves to be a challenge for him in the tournament finals. Regardless of his best efforts, Goku comes up short against Jackie Chun – in more ways than one.

Under the guise of Jackie, Grandmaster Roshi joins the World Tournament with the intention of preventing Goku from emerging victorious. Remarkably, he manages to achieve this feat. Following a lengthy training period with Goku, Grandmaster Roshi finds that they have reached an almost equal level. However, in the climactic moment, he emerges triumphant when both combatants have depleted their ki reserves. His extended limbs provide greater impact for his final strike than Goku’s final blow.

Goku Never Fairly Defeats the Strongest Member of the Red Ribbon Army

As a martial artist, General Blue wasn’t any more dangerous to Goku than Colonel Silver or General White. It wasn’t his fighting skills but his special ability – telekinesis – that gave him an edge over Goku. Catching Goku off guard with his psychic moves, General Blue managed to outsmart him and snatch one of the Dragon Balls that Goku was trying to collect.

In contrast to many villains from the original Dragon Ball series who defeated Goku, Goku does not emerge victorious in a rematch against General Blue. Although they do encounter each other again, this takes place during a crossover with Dr. Slump. Despite the fact that it’s plausible Goku could have overcome Blue on his own, in reality, he did so with the aid of Arale, a character known for her overpowered humor-based abilities.

Tao Swiftly Proves Why He’s the World’s Greatest Assassin

In contrast to General Blue, Mercenary Tao truly dominated Goku in their fight, leaving the World Martial Arts Tournament finalist completely overmatched. If not for the intervention of the Four-Star Dragon Ball, which blocked Tao’s final attack, Goku would not have survived his first encounter with this renowned assassin.

Regrettably for Tao, his failure to complete the task would eventually lead to dire consequences. Following his training with Korin, Goku had grown so powerful that he now surpassed Tao significantly. The brutal beating Goku inflicted on him during their rematch was devastating, leaving Tao no choice but to use a grenade as a last resort. However, this tactic ended up backfiring disastrously.

Goku Fails at His Second Attempt to Win the World Martial Arts Tournament

During his initial appearance, it was just Tien Shinhan who could measure up to Goku in terms of strength. Although he acknowledges that Goku holds a greater advantage in raw power, during the finals of the 22nd Martial Arts World Tournament, Tien trades blows with Goku, showcasing an extensive array of techniques far superior to his opponent’s. Eventually, it was Tien who emerged victorious and was hailed as the strongest man beneath the celestial sphere.

In this fight, Tien’s victory appears to be anything but fair. Goku manages to dodge Tien’s Solar Flare by using Master Roshi’s sunglasses, a move some might consider underhanded. Meanwhile, Master Shen and Chiaotzu seem to be aiding Tien dishonestly throughout the fight. Despite this cheating, Tien compensates by letting Goku land several heavy blows on him. The battle ends with Goku being knocked out of the ring due to a collision with a car. However, if it weren’t for the rules of the tournament, Goku would have lost regardless, as Tien is correct in his belief that his Tri-Beam would have killed Goku instantly.

Goku Has Everything Going Against Him During His First Fight Against King Piccolo’s Son

Through the act of killing Krillin, Tambourine infuriated Goku like no other villain had before. In a moment of blind rage, spurred on by the discovery of Krillin’s lifeless body, Goku rushes after Tambourine. However, this pursuit turns out to be a fatal mistake. Tambourine manages to overpower Goku, stopping just short of killing him due to neglecting to confirm that he was truly dead following their battle.

In essence, regardless of whether Tamobourine was indeed stronger than Goku at that particular moment, it makes little difference. During their initial encounter, Goku was mentally impaired as he engaged an airborne enemy, a feat he hadn’t yet mastered himself. This battle followed closely on the heels of another grueling confrontation with Tien. However, when Goku proposes a rematch against Tambourine, the circumstances that hindered him during their first encounter no longer apply, allowing him to ultimately defeat the demon.

No Explanation Is Ever Given for How Goku Survives His Beating From King Piccolo

In the thrilling realm of Dragon Ball, I can attest that none compared to the relentless might of King Piccolo. He mercilessly claimed the lives of Chiaotzu and Shenron, Master Roshi bravely laid down his life in a futile attempt to halt him, and when I dared to confront this formidable foe for the first time, I barely escaped with my life.

What sets King Piccolo apart is that the brutal beating he inflicted upon me happened before he regained his youth through the Dragon Balls – a testament to his power even when not at peak strength.

Unlike the defeats of Goku against Tao and Tambourine, where the reason for his survival is never disclosed, King Piccolo, a wiser villain than his predecessor and son, takes the precaution to verify that Goku’s heart has indeed ceased beating. However, as soon as King Piccolo leaves the scene, it’s mysteriously revealed that Goku has miraculously survived once more.

Goku Had Absolutely No Counter for Vegeta’s Great Ape Form

Although Goku played a significant role in helping Gohan, Krillin, and Yajirobe defeat Vegeta, it was clear that he himself suffered a severe beating at the hands of the Saiyan Prince. From the outset of their one-on-one fight, Goku was only able to match half of Vegeta’s power, forcing him to exert his body to the limit with Kaio-Ken in order to keep pace. Goku managed to triumph in their energy blast exchange by using Kaio-Ken x4, but this victory primarily served to shatter Vegeta’s ego rather than achieving any tangible result.

In his Base form, it’s highly likely Vegeta would have emerged victorious, but he secures the win by transforming into a Great Ape. Exhausted, Goku is left bruised, weakened, and tormented by the Great Ape Vegeta. With no hope of resisting him, Goku can only watch as his friends intervene in the fight. By this point, Goku is shattered and immobilized, all he can do is pass on the energy he gathered for the Spirit Bomb to Krillin and offer words of support to Gohan.

Goku Came Close to Dying on Namek Without Even Meeting Frieza

In the world of Dragon Ball Z, if Captain Ginyu had fought like most characters, I’d say he wouldn’t have stood a chance against Goku. However, luck was on Frieza’s strongest lieutenant’s side because he’s got a unique trick up his sleeve. In a twist no one saw coming, when Ginyu took a fatal blow, instead of succumbing to the damage, he switched bodies with Goku! Leaving the mighty Saiyan to bleed out and perish was quite the unexpected move from this formidable foe.

In a thrilling turn of events, I found myself dangerously overconfident against the formidable foe, Ginyu. Instead of acting swiftly, I squandered precious time that almost cost me my life before the body swap took place. Regrettably, I couldn’t find a way to save myself or reclaim my own body without external help. To rectify the situation and defeat Ginyu, I received invaluable assistance from my comrades – Gohan, Krillin, and Vegeta. Our strategy only succeeded due to Ginyu’s mismanagement of my power, making him an unexpected ally in our quest for victory.

Goku’s Heart Virus Gives Him More Problems Than Android 19

Following my observation, after vanquishing Frieza, Super Saiyan Goku found himself facing the weakest Android in Dragon Ball Z, Android 19. Contrary to expectations, it was 19 who proved to be the dominant force, overwhelming Goku and depleting his energy reserves. However, this unexpected turn of events wasn’t due to 19 being stronger than Goku; instead, it was a part of Android 16’s plan to save the human race.

During one of the most unfortunate turns in Goku’s life, he develops a heart virus right at the start of his confrontation with the Androids. By the time his battle against Android 19 commences, he is in a significantly weakened state, and as the fight prolongs, his energy depletes further. If Goku had been at his peak physical condition, he would have reduced Android 19 to scrap and shortened the Cell Saga considerably.

Cell Holds Back During His Entire Fight Against Goku

In their battle unlike any other with Dragon Ball Z villains, Goku found himself clearly outmatched by Perfect Cell. Unlike his previous encounters with Vegeta, Frieza, and Buu where there was struggle and hope, this time, Goku faced Cell without desperation or the long-term expectation of victory. Instead, Goku measured Cell’s power, tested his own abilities against him, and ultimately concluded that Cell was too strong for him to stand a chance.

In a surprisingly relaxed manner, Goku intentionally withdraws from the fight with Cell. He feels confident that his friend Gohan has the power to defeat the Android. Through their battle, it’s revealed just how much Cell had been restraining himself against Goku, and how swiftly he could have defeated Goku if he’d chosen to do so.

Goku Could Have Defeated Majin Vegeta With the Power of Super Saiyan 3

In their second encounter, just as in their initial battle, Vegeta emerges victorious against Goku. Empowered slightly more this time around, Vegeta, now in Super Saiyan 2 form, fights Goku evenly in Super Saiyan 2 form. However, the outcome is different as Majin Vegeta triumphs by using his intellect rather than brute strength. He deceitfully agrees to halt the battle so that the two Saiyans can address Majin Buu, but then unexpectedly strikes Goku and knocks him unconscious.

In their second confrontation, Vegeta’s victory over Goku carries an even larger question mark compared to their first. While Vegeta emerged victorious in the initial fight, it was Goku who allowed his comrades to defeat the Saiyan Prince by holding back. However, in this match, Goku deliberately withheld using Super Saiyan 3 throughout the entire fight, which would have resulted in an instant defeat for Majin Vegeta if employed against Fat Buu instead. Despite this, it’s worth noting that Goku has yet to truly conquer Vegeta in a one-on-one battle, leaving their encounters shrouded in ambiguity.
